What are the fewest battles necessary to win the war?
Chris McChesney at Global Leadership Summit
Earlier in my career, I thought young people talked about strategy and execution being important and old people talked about culture being important. I actually think they are both true. It’s just a timing difference. The thing that matters right now is the strategy and the execution. The thing that matters in the long term is the people who are setting that strategy and driving that execution. In my mind, the culture determines who self-selects to be those people over the long-term. So if you care about the people who will make the strategy and execution decisions in the moment beyond right now, you should care about culture. I think of culture as the unwritten contract with your team. Here’s what matters to us. Here’s what will endure even if everything else changes.
Ravi Gupta on joy, competitiveness, and culture
I always believed that you can put together a great team, with great leadership and vision for where you want to go. For us at AMD... we love what we do. We're about pushing the envelope on technology. And what I needed to get the team thinking about is: It's not just what we did today, it's customers and partners who want to be able to believe in you for the next five years, for the next ten years, and build those deep partnerships.
AMD President and CEO Lisa Su
The best writing is borne of humility. The great stuff comes to life in those agonising and exhilarating moments when writers become acutely aware of the limitations of their skills, for it is then that they strain the hardest to make use of their imperfect tools with which they must work.
Dean Koontz
The artist committing himself to his calling has volunteered for hell, whether he knows it or not. He will be dining for the duration on a diet of isolation, rejection, self-doubt, despair, ridicule, contempt, and humiliation.
Steven Pressfield, The War of Art
Collaboration - A definition
A diverse team, with a shared understanding of goals, collectively generating solutions, with the result being greater than any one individual could achive alone.
- Karen VanHouten
“What motivates me... I think the most important thing for me is the team I have around me, that when I talk to people here, they are satisfied, that they're moving forward, that you have an environment where people can feel we are successful, moving in the right direction, where they say "I love working here", and enjoying the success together. I think that is the biggest motivation. It doesn't come from your bosses, it doesn't come from your salary, it comes from the team, from what you have around you.”
-Matthias Fischer CEO Toyota Material Handling Europe
“Everybody wants to go lean until they realise what it takes. It's not a fluffy subject. It's something you do on a day-to-day basis, and you always aim for more and you never give up.”
-Pär Forsell Senior Manager at Toyota Lean Academy
I think it was kind of in the background, but there were a series of events that occurred where I would have made different decisions, and I realised at that point that it was time for me to go. Because I had a different point of view about what was possible for the company and the path that I would take to get there. [...] If you ever get to the point where you no longer agree with the strategy, what are you doing? And so I said: 'What am I doing?' And then I quit!
