Early American Land Surveys
The 1690 act of British Parliament revoking land charters in New England nullified existing land grants, titles, and deeds and demanded a survey of publicly and privately owned land in New England, the mid-Atlantic, and the southern colonies. They marked trees, clear-cut forests, and created geometrically shaped lots (16).

Vicente de Memije "Aspecto symbolico del mundo Hispanico" & "Aspecto geografico del mundo Hispanico" (1761)
Maps are reviewed according to the utilitarian expectation that maps were scientific records providing a quasi-mimetic representation of physical and cultural landscapes (Bruckner 391)
