When life gives you tomatoes...
Earlier this month I competed in a cosplay competition for the first time
And I'm SO glad to report that it went better than I could have ever imagined!
(Character Design by @lackadaisycats, photography by rawrcophoto on Instagram)
THIS COSTUME won a Best Journeyman's award!!!!!
For those uninitiated, cosplay craftsmanship competitions are usually split into 3 levels based on competition experience; Novice, Journeyman, and Master. When you first start competing, you start in novice, and once you win a certain number of Best Novice awards, you're bumped up into Journeyman.
This being my first time competing, winning Best Journeyman means that my work was judged above everyone who entered as a Novice, AND everyone who entered as a Journeyman, which still feels INSANE to me. I fully was not expecting to get bumped, there were so many amazing contestants that I was FLOORED when they called my number to go up and receive my award. I'm so incredibly honored to have shared the stage with so many amazing cosplayers and to have my work deemed worthy of recognition!
For all the stress and challenge the build brought, I'm SO glad I finally took the plunge and competed like I had been wanting to do for so long! Having the contest as a motivator to push myself really helped me create work that I'm extremely proud of!
I think it's safe to say I've been bitten by the competition bug, and I WILL be doing this again. Maybe a little spaced out so I can avoid the burnout lol, but I've already got SO many ideas. Stay tuned, there will be more to come...
Congratulations! šš

How did you get so good at drawing? I was curious since I want to get really good but I donāt really understand it and itās hard for me, also that I want to draw but too scared to do it at the same time. So any tips would be helpful
Hello Miles Josephine!
Wow I had to go back and look thru some very old folders for this one, but I think it's necesary to make my point, you see, I didn't start off drawing good, like most people that are pros now didn't start of that way, these were some of my first drawings
I was 14 when I started drawing, and I also looked up to awesome artist I saw and wanted to be that good! but that didn't happen right away, drawing like many skills takes time and dedication, it can be frustrating and hard at times, but thats true of many things in life, art is about persistence and practice, of going back at it again, of pouring love into it and enjoying where you are at that moment, because even these drawings here, I still am proud of, because I did them with my own hands, I went from cicles and sticks to doodles that started to look more like characters, and as time goes on those character look even more and more like what your looking for.
When I got my first digital tablet I though "This is it, this is the magic thing that will make my drawings look like the pros!" I didn't, My skill level was still my own and using a tablet at the start was harder than using pen and paper
But I kept practicing, and when I redrew this same concept, it looked like this
I know it can be frustrating and so many of us kinda say the same thing dont' we? "keep practicing, don't give up, do your own thing" but the reason most artist give this advice is because it's true, hell even my first animations where not that great, I only knew how to make a character blink.
And how do you practice then? there are so so many resources online that can help you get started. I will link here a few of the ones I used when I didn't know where to go or what to do.
Hey, Lucas here, I'm a Concept Artist and Illustrator with a passion for sharing art tips with the world :)
And there are many many many more guides, tutorials and resources for free online that can help you get started! It's okay if you start and you're not at the level you want to be yet, I myself still have many things to learn and can still grow as an artist, I made this same question to someone else when I was starting out, and now here I am, and my journey isn't even over yet, I know you can do it.
I hope this helps you a least a little bit Miles, have a good one!
