Project #5 Final Project PORTFOLIO BOOK

This was my first time working with InDesign to make a book. The process was long but I enjoyed being able to create something on the computer into something physical. The process was very enjoyable.

Favorite and Least Favorite Projects:

My favorite projects were Projects #2 and 5. They were my favorite because I really enjoyed the process of making the collage and portfolio book more unique and special to me. My least favorite project is Project #1 because I had a difficult time thinking of a logo that represented me.

Most Successful Projects:

The most successful project in my opinion is Project #2 because it really showed my identity while it was the first time that I made a collage on Photoshop.

Learned About Digital Art:

I learned that digital art is not the easy way out and that it still takes a lot of time and patience to make great artwork.

Learn More About Digital Art:

I would like to be more skilled at making digital art in different programs.

Computer as My Medium Enhanced My Creative Practice:

Working with a computer as my medium enhanced my creative practice because it allows me to make many different pieces with just a few clicks of a mouse.

Final Book and Overall Design:

My final portfolio book relates to digital art by having to create it in InDesign and printing it for my project. The overall design allows others to see me through the pictures and design.

Book Design and Tumblr Design:

The overall book design and the design of my online Tumblr portfolio is related because they both show the flower that I like the most and the colors that match the overall feel of the book and the Tumblr portfolio.

Expected Grade on Final Project:

I expect a “B” on the final project. The book is not really as well put together as it could be because I did not know how InDesign with the Blurb plugin worked, therefore, causing the book to look different from what I intended it to look.

Expected Grade in the Course:

I expect an “A” in the course because I go to all the classes except one of them but I turn everything in on time and try to put my 100% effort into all the projects and assignments that I make for the class.

My drawings made on Weavesilk.com are the final product of me experimenting with the different buttons and colors on the program. I tried to make some drawings look more symbol like.

I selected this article because I was interested in the integration of technology and art.

I felt that it is important to share this article because technology is becoming more and more involved in our lives and art is no exception.

This article affected me in the way I saw technology and art being combined together. It gave me a better view on even though some people may not notice, technology is changing art a little by little.

It has always fascinated me to see all the wonderful technology that celebrities may include in their music videos but now art is part of that as well. In the clothes that celebrities may wear, technology is blended in it. Technology is everywhere we look, it is hard to escape from it.

Nayland Blake mentioned how if the results are not the way one expects it to be then they might just be the groundwork for the later works. And the saying, “If you stop, they win” really caught my attention because as artists, we should keep on making art until we are satisfied.

Nayland Blake was clear in some parts to why he used certain materials and did certain things in his art. He was clear about explaining why a certain piece was made to make what kind of a statement.

The whole exhibition began with a performance outside the Performing Arts Building Entrance of Breached Whale and Pilgrim Monumental.

I thought that the whole exhibition gave people new ways to see things that seem very common. Like the condoms and the face masks that make a statement.

The disposable cameras that make up the flashing twin towers allows people to see how the 9/11 was the center of attention. The flashing of the disposable cameras shows emphasis on the overall piece.

The flag made of masks draws attention to how the lines of the masks moves the eyes. The repetition of the colors and masks allows the piece to be seen as a whole instead of the individual items.

Color Study #4 Illusion of Transparency

The Illusion of Transparency is where colors come together to make the objects look as though they are transparent. 

By making some colors darker or lighter makes the objects look as though they exist behind or infront of an object. 

My drawings exemplify my understanding of this concept by showing the different objects appearing as though in front and or behind other objects.

Assignment #3: Create your own Header & Avatar

My header represents who I am by showing the beautiful cherry blossoms that I got to see while in Korea last year. 

And the text on the header are lyrics to my favorite VIXX song, Blue Blossoms. These couple of lines are my favorite because it shows how our youth is the best time in our life. 

My avatar shows how unique and beautiful a cherry blossom could be on its own. And I want people to see me for who I am because when you see a single cherry blossom, it looks white but when seen in a group, it looks pink. 

I do not want to be overshadowed by others so I chose the single cherry blossom to show that. 

My newly customized online portfolio works with what I have created to express my individuality because it ties with some of the projects that I have previously created.

Project #4: REMIX/MASHUP VIDEO = putting it all together

I came up with the concept to talk about how technology is taking over our lives. And how the generation now has been so addicted to social media that one does not notice that it has become an addiction. 

The music that I chose went with the theme that I have of technology.

The digital format that I have chosen for my concept fits my concept because it is a computer program that we learned about in class and one that I have not worked with before.

 I wanted to get familiar with the program so I used the program to make my video.

The project’s inspiration came from my frustration when I spend time with my sisters and noticing that we are always on our cell phones and barely talking to one another. 

I realized how much cell phones and technology has taking control over in our lives.

The elements that were used in the video were rhythm, unity, and movement. 

Rhythm is shown when the pictures match the rhythm of the music. 

And unity is shown when all the images and video in the mashup pertain to the same subject, technology. 

Movement is showed when the music guides the images throughout the mashup.

What I learned throughout the process of the project:

Videos like this take a lot of time and tweaking

Working with Premiere is not as hard as it first seemed

With time and practice anyone could make a decent video

Lynda.com [Tutorials 4 & 5]

Adjusting transitions using the Rolling Edit tool

This tutorial uses the Rolling Edit tool in Premiere Pro CC to change a transition in one sequence without making any other changes in the later clips. The tutorial shows how to get to the Rolling Edit tool in two different ways.

Pros:

Speaker is clear

Shows how to do the same thing in two different ways

Shows the different keyboard shortcuts for the tool

Cons:

None

What I learned:

I learned how to change transitions in clips easily and more efficiently.

Creating and applying master pages

The tutorial shows how the master page in InDesign help make the process of putting in headers and footers in each page a much easier process. The tutorial gives step by step directions on how to make the master page work for all the pages.

Pros:

Easy steps to follow

Shows ways to get the footer of the cover different from the other pages

Cons:

Speaker’s voice is very hard to listen to for a long time

What I learned:

I learned how to easily apply header and footers to each page without much work.

Reading #3: The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

Points of interest:

Different meaning as the atmosphere of the art is changed

Reproduced art is less meaningful than the original

Cult Value vs. Exhibit Value

Film and photograph changed the perspectives

In the article by Walter Benjamin, it said that reproduced art is less meaningful than the original because it was not created in the same circumstances as the original. I agree that reproduced art might lose some of the original meanings and that the new art may not be as valued as the original, as seen in knockoffs and replicas.

The cult value was defined as the respect that the art got and the sacredness of the art. And exhibit value was defined as the availability of the art to be seen by the general public. Cult value and exhibit value is different in the audience that could see the art.

Photographs that had cult value were the ones that tried to remember their loved ones. And with the change in perspectives, photographs could make a scene look as though it is a crime scene.

Films changed how actors and audiences saw each other. Although it is thought that film disconnects the actors and audiences, the change in perspective could be helpful to how the actors presented themselves to the public.

The differences between creating a color study on digital media and on paper is that on paper, one has to cut and paste with materials that one can touch and feel. But on digital media it is all on a computer and it is easier to make changes to the drawing than when doing the same thing on paper.

The similarities with creating a color study on digital media and on paper is that the artist is the one that is controlling what is done to make the final product the way it looks.

I learned that changing a paper drawing into a digital version can have some difficulties that may come up. The difficulties that comes from making a color study done first on paper then making the same color study on digital media is that the colors of the paper color study may be changed when seen on the computer. The same color could look different on different computer screens.

Project #3: MUSIC VIDEO (group project) = Story + Image + Sound

We are the Starving Artists and this is our video for Shadow Dancing by Andy Gibb. We used several elements of art and principles of design to create this video and have incorporated the concepts of story, image & sound – we are truly happy and proud with the results.

Color

Movement

Rhythm

We used a variety of hues and values in the making of this video and various degrees of light and dark were used to create our dancing shadows. The difference in elements created a value contrast against the background showing the shapes and forms of a variety of foods as you are able to identify the dimensions of the foods.

Movement was a major principle of design in our video as the viewer’s eyes are constantly being lead from one aspect to another. There is a repetition of alternative elements that allows for an interesting sense of rhythm.

We tried to make a video with visuals that went along with the lyrics in a fun and unique way.

As you can see we successfully did that with the lyrics, “drag me across the floor, shadow dancing”

We also wanted to make sure to stay true to who we are and incorporate our theme of food in a playful and humorous way. We basically took lyrics that were intended to have a certain meaning and portrayed them to reflect who we are.

Assignment #2: Favorite Music Video

Title: G.R.8.U

Artist: VIXX

Year: 2013

I chose this music video because this music video is very unique because it was filmed then it was played backwards for the final product. I also really like how the artists learned the lyrics to the song backwards so that they could lip-sync the lyrics correctly when the video is played backwards.

I like the color palatte used in the video because it is very clean with all the white but with some bright colors that show up in the white room.

The space created with the cloud background in the dancing scene makes the space bigger.

The movement of the camera around the white room makes the video more interesting.

The final dancing scene only consisted of black, white, blue and red but the colors made the scene very light-hearted and fun just like the dance.

The collage like changing of clothes and members during some parts of the video is very appealing in that it makes the video more unique.

I also like how the messy room in the beginning turns back into the tidy room that they started out in.

Reading #2: Allergy to Originality by Drew Christie

Interesting ideas from the video and the reading:

I found that the idea of unoriginality that Drew Christie found from a donated book was really interesting because she found other places where the almost same sentence was in.

The video was really interesting to how it showed unoriginality because there is too many sequels and remakes of the same things over and over again in today’s society.

The ticketer that recited the Wiki pages as the evidence to support his argument on unoriginality emphasized how he like others just say the things they remember from sources that they once heard, saw or read from.

It is not uncommon to read something that seemed familiar because it is probably already done before in one way or another.

I think that unoriginality is not an issue because in the terms of fashion, the same fashion statement now could be a fashion statement in ten years. People tend to like things that seem familiar.

Many love story plots today are just a tweak of Romeo and Juliet. But people still love the “new” plots just as much as they did the original.

Color Study #2: Value, Monochromatic & Chromatic

Value:

The first drawing shows value because it has a range of grays as well as white and black. Value is the lightness or darkness of tones or colors.

Monochromatic Blue:

The second drawing shows monochromatic because it has the same color different values and saturations of blue. Monochromatic is when there is only one color used.

Chromatic:

The third drawing shows chromatic because it is has a variety of hues but in a gray shade. Chromatic is when the colors have a similar saturation.

Project #2: Digital Collage/Montage - Exploration in Multiple Media

Conceptual idea:

For this project we were supposed to make a Photomontage or Collage that answered the question, Who Are You? And I decided to come up with a list of things that I thought that represented me. I thought of ways to make the photomontage or collage more interesting by searching on Google and Pinterest for inspiration.

Digital format:

I decided to make a collage because I could use different mediums in one piece.

Inspiration:

I looked on Google and Pinterest for pictures of photomontages and collages that I wanted to incorporate in my own collage. I saw one that I like some parts of and another one that I liked parts of too so I tried to put the two together.

Formal Elements and Concept:

I wanted my background to look like the sunset, which I liked, so I used a picture that I took of the sunset to make the background.

While I was studying abroad in Korea last year, I got to take some nice pictures of Cherry Blossoms and I really wanted to add them into my collage because they are something I really adored. I wanted to add some fake and real elements into my collage to make it less flat so I drew in a fake Cherry Blossom branch and added pictures of my sisters and me on the flowers to make the collage more specific to who I am. I added a tint of pink to the pictures so that they seem like a Cherry Blossom.

The Harry Potter wands were added into the collage to create a movement for the eye to follow around the collage and also they were something that I am sort of obsessed with since I was young.

I had a cluster of concert and musical tickets on the corner to show my obsession with KPop and show how much I have done without my sisters last year as well as the time that I went with them. I also wanted to show how much I liked music so I added the vague outline of a music player under the tickets.

I visited Hong Kong three times and every time I go, I love eating the food there the most. I used the two foods that I liked the most that had a more orange shade to include at the bottom of the collage where the sunset looks more orange.

What I have learned while creating this collage:

Making collages are very time consuming because even though they look messy, they take lots of time and tweaking to make the final product the way it is.

I learned how to use Photoshop better.
