I think for a work of fiction to be somewhat coherent in what the author wants to say it needs to be grounded in some sort of moral belief about the world. It doesn’t even need to be a religious background mind you, it can be damn near any philosophy so long as one is willing to understand that it must be criticized as a part of the process of engagement.
