Canāt sleep
Iāve been thinking about how Brian has always had a habit of over-valuing his place in other peopleās lives.
Itās not that he has an inflated sense of self importance or anything. While he can be a little egotistical about his work, he isnāt egocentric. He just sort of assumes that the other person feels the same way that he feels.
Brian may consider someone a good friend, while they only regard him as an acquaintance. The loss of their friendship might hurt him deeply, but the other person doesnāt even think about it.
Heās gotten better about it over the years, if only because heās just stopped trying to make friends.
Heās always felt that there is a sort of barrier between him and other people, and heās gotten tired of trying to break through it.

"Who said you're a burden? I'll fight them." The professor's hands clenched into fists and rose, his arms curling inwards like a boxer preparing to both give and take pain. The posing was all for humerous effect, of course. Brian had never even thrown a genuine punch before.
"But really-" Dropping the facade as quickly as he'd adopted it, Brian pulled an old wooden chair out from beneath a matching dining table. "Sit. Rest. Relax. Let me make you something to eat. It's no trouble, I promise; I'm starving, too."

Requiem Starters // Still Accepting @runecast said: ādonāt be ridiculous.ā / brian.
Ordinarily, Professor Barnaby wasn't one to argue. He could defend his stance and refute opposition just as any academic should, but he did not enjoy petty, pointless squabbling. However, there were a few select things that could get beneath his skin and really rile him up.
"Oh, I'm being ridiculous?" Brian's arms folded across his chest, his Roman nose pointed towards the air in indignation. "I'm not the one suggesting that a film can be cursed, much less one from the Thirties that no one's ever heard of but you."

[While Dancing Meme from @eldritchsign for Basil.]
āMay I have this dance?ā ------------
Only years of practice kept relief from Thera's face at the familiar voice. She'd been in the process of trying to decide exactly why she'd been invited to this party - manners, as decoration, or because word had spread through the community about a single woman of considerable means, who must surely be looking for a husband to get his hands on help her manage it.
There was no shortage of takers. Or at least that might be one of the reasons they gathered around her like smiling sharks contemplating a feed. Her polite smile was starting to become fixed when Basil's mild tone reached her ears, and she turned to him just a little too quickly.
"Major Ashford," She greeted, the smile turning genuine, "how wonderful to see you!" Thera held out her hand, exhaling softly. "You most certainly may!"
Basil was no stranger to this sort of social gathering. He'd attended many of them both in his youth and upon his return to London, and his family had hosted more than a few of their own over the years. It would be entirely incorrect to suggest that he'd ever enjoyed them, though. The Major was a social man, he liked meeting people and making friends, but he could hardly stand the weight of performance upon his shoulders.
And while it may have been difficult, Basil was not so self-important that he discounted the experiences of others. He knew that the expectations for young women at these gatherings were always much more suffocating, so when he'd spotted Thera and the swarm of men barking for attention, he did not hesitate to part the crowd and offer a bit of respite.
"And it is always lovely to see you too, my dear." Basil responded with a wink of his eye. He took the hand that was offered to him and like any gentleman should, he bowed before her.
Once clear of the crowd and on to the intimacy of the dance floor, the Major gave her a smile and held out his arms for a proper waltz.
"I truly hope you don't mind. It just seemed like you could use a break from the hounds."

Londonās catacombs, the long-buried carcass of a gaslit age. Basil had never been beneath those crumbling ceilings before, but nearly everything about the situation felt uncomfortably familiar. It was not the first time that his lungs had filled air that was thick and damp with decay, nor was it his first venture into complete and total darkness. Even the sound of his own heartbeat thrumming in his ears was something that he knew quite well. The only thing that felt new to Major Ashford was the presence of someone else, footsteps to match his own and a warmth at his back. Leaving the grip of his pistol, Basilās left hand extended outward. āWait.ā He commanded. āThereās something up ahead.ā

Brianās near-perpetually wide eyes narrow for just a moment at the question, the corner of his mouth perking to match. He couldnāt quite tell if the woman was being serious or not, and it made him feel rather foolish. That was always how it had been, though. Years of academic study couldnāt quite fill a natural gap in interpersonal communication.
āBecause this is a library?ā He shrugged his shoulders. āIt may be my library, but itās still a library.ā
