So this is my open letter to the Yahoo execs and tumblr managers. You should reconsider your guidelines.
While I am sure you have received many MANY messages and comments regarding this topic. I would like to throw my two cents in as well.
Can you explain why female presenting nipples are a problem? Like what EXACTLY about them is a problem for your guidelines? Are you telling me my nipples are inherently more sexual than a man’s nipples? That’s what I’m getting here.
Also, please explain how female presenting nipples are to be classified. Areola come in different shapes and colors… will there be specific requirements we must conform to? Or is it the amount of breast tissue being shown that is the problem? Male presenting breasts ALSO can have larger amounts of tissue and appear “feminine” (by your standards)-are you banning these as well?
Now if you don’t understand the backlash from your users (which it seems you don’t with your snarky “yeah we know you don’t like that term” comment) then I shall share the burden of explaining it to you. The issue that you’re encountering here is the overt sexualization of female bodies (specifically their nipples). And then you are literally BANNING those bodies from being seen. You can make exceptions all you want with art and breastfeeding, but the fact remains that your choice in language displays your lack of understanding in how female bodies should be treated.
Along with the absurdity of attempting to label female presenting nipples as such, you have also seen fit to remind us of your support for the LGBTQ+ community. This I would like to say is complete and utter bullshit. You merely tolerate the community. If you supported it, you would not have so callously chosen the phrase “female presenting” when discussing your ban of sexual content because it is alienating and outright incorrect.
If you are trying to create a more family-friendly environment, maybe don’t teach your impressionable members that the female body is inherently sexual and should be monitored and controled by some corporate entity. Consider creating a space where female and male bodies can be seen as equal and beautiful.
Language is a powerful tool and how you have chosen to use it is disappointing and irresponsible.
