staying in the same flat for another year has been a godsend. having the same roommate is some baller shit. river knows he probably could have played the 'i'm blind and learning a new flat would be ableist' card, but he's not that kind of guy (usually) and he hates letting anyone think he isn't capable—because he is. their stuff is settled in their places, every flat surface coated in a layer of paint and graphite and pastel dust. surely they'll be charged for it when the time to move out does come, but river certainly does not give a fuck—have fun charging his empty bank account mother fuckers! "ezra," he calls out, "i'm making a cheese toastie. d'you want one?" he waves the bread, his eyes closed. its easier than wearing glasses—sometimes his ears start to hurt—and better than leaving ezra sitting in the dark. @electroding
ezra isn't necessarily paying much attention to the work he was meant to be doing. boring stuff: attempting to fix a bug in the way he had designed a sensor. instead, his eyes are transfixed on the lightbulb that sat in his lamp. it was flickering (like most do when he's near), his eyes tracking the way the filament glowed a bright blue before going out; the repetition transfixing him. his arm extends without him realizing. the rough pads of his fingers flexing out from the fist it had been set in on the desk, like the currents of blue were calling to him, beckoning him forward. he should have known that the bulb would burst—he did know—but he always risked it anyways. electricity arcs inside of the glass shell and the filament burns out with a loud crack flooding his room into darkness. first fucking day and he already blew a fuse. god, whatever. ezra pushes himself away from his desk, the rolling wheels on his chair sliding against the hardwood floor, ignoring the shocks of a florescent hue that glide across his fingers. his fingers flex, willing the ions within him to slow down, to go away before he does something worse to his roommate than the first time he had stepped into their shared apartment. "fuckin' blew a fuse," ezra grumbles as he steps into their shared space. it was familiar now, their stuff mixed together like it had always belonged there in the first place. he liked that about river. the ease in which it was to be near him. "you can open your eyes." ezra doesn't have to look at river to know, that even in the dimness of it, he'd still prefer the dark. "pull the plug on the stove and hand it to me," he stumbles through the darkness to the kitchen, feeling for the counter and pulling himself up on it to sit, an arm reaching out for the cord. "i still want a cheese toastie."
finn bennett, cis man, he/him ϟ the registry admits ezra richards as a twenty-seven year old student. the containment office records their mutation as electrokinesis; its documented cost is frequent energy depletion. they’re studying mechanical engineering, and their stance on institutional protection, training, and oversight is recorded as pro-containment. among the university’s cloisters, laboratories, and locked corridors, they are known to be tenderhearted & adroit, and no less withdrawn & curt. their file is marked by backwards ball caps that keep unruly strands of caramel colored hair at bay / sparks of blue that coil around lithe fingers, energy coming and going from his body / the way the world smells after a downpour — damp soil and a leafy sweetness.
