I worry so much about my imperfections.  A pimple.  Body hair.  Greasy-looking hair.  Dark circles.  When in reality, when I love a man, I do not love him nor find him beautiful because he is perfect, physically.  Nor do I love him less, and often love him more, when he has blemishes, or greasy hair, or dark circles under his eyes.  I love him when I feel the courage in him, the authenticity, the loyalty, the sacrifice, the innocence, the passion, the conviction, and the integrity.  I love him for his vision, for his heart, for the mystery of his being that he shares with God.  I love him for his purity and his simplicity.  I love him when he is most himself.  And not that I love him less when he is not all of these things, because I can somehow always feel and sense and see and experience his true nature, underneath any inauthenticities.  

We are told these days that we must strive to love ourselves first, and not to expect to be loved when we do not even love ourselves.  Well, I think the greater miracle is witnessing another person coming into my life and loving me more than I love myself, and loving all the places in me where I feel afraid or withdrawn or ashamed.  No, I do not think we must love ourselves first.  I think we must allow ourselves to be loved and to receive the love that we long for.

Love is the Great Physician

When children become ill, when their bodies or emotions show signs of imbalance or something being "not quite right," it is often a sign that a fundamental need of love is not being met with sufficiency.  My experience, instincts and intuition as a mother have taught me that when my son is sick, he needs the nourishment and comfort of my love, and the genuine love of others.  That is, wholehearted, authentic love.  If the symptoms of this lack or need are ignored, the illness can worsen or descend into a deeper layer which is then expressed in a different form, covering up the original cause and cure even further.  The child may develop behavioral or personality changes which are more difficult to uproot as the disease sinks deeper into the psyche and body.  Children can literally shield their souls, or glaze over their eyes, when their needs and symptoms are completely ignored or misunderstood.  And so, this is why it is extremely important to always consider the child's emotional need for wholehearted love whenever he or she shows simple signs of imbalance, such as a cold or a slight change in behavior.  Please do not ignore these signs.  If you are paying careful attention, you may even notice what caused the symptoms to arise.

The good news is

that Love is the great Physician

and it is within our power as mothers, fathers, caretakers, and friends to bring love to the ill, especially to children, who most innocently show us what they need in order to grow and be healthy.
