Parting of Ways || Self Para/Close
David closed the latch on his luggage, and straightened up for the first time in what felt like hours. He had been packing away his office area for a few days and slowly bringing things home, but there still seemed to be more than he had anticipated. How he had managed to still keep so many things in his office even after a war was beyond him, but he was glad that it was finally all packed. He cast a final glance around his office and smiled. It was slightly destroyed, but everyone had been working hard enough at reconstruction that it was beginning to look like it’s old self again. He smiled, wondering briefly what exactly it would look like when he replacement arrived.
Replacement.
It seemed like such a stranger word. He knew in the beginning that he wasn’t going to be sticking around Hogwarts much longer. But now that he was ready to leave for the last time, it was so very real. It was not likely that he would return to these halls--see these ghosts, laugh with the students, help them. As excited as he was to take the this new step, it filled him with a terror he could not explain. Nothing like the fear he felt during the war--but certainly enough to shake him where he stood. It was almost impossible to realize that he had spent so many years in this castle. The memories of his life seemed to flick around the stone corridors--meeting Basil and Olivia, studying in the Wing, Arista. The thought of her made him smile weakly. There wasn’t a day that went by that he didn’t miss her gravely, and now there would be so many new souls that would join her. It was a tragedy, yet, through it all, he still felt peace.
“You probably wouldn’t believe me that I’m actually happy now,” he said out loud--as if speaking to the air would send the words to Arista on some different plane. “But I am so...thank you. For everything.” With that, he took his luggage and headed for the door. For his new life at a new hospital with new challenges and dangers. A chance to settle down completely in a way that he had never expected would happen before. As he reached the threshold of the room, he turned and looked back one final time and smiled. “Thank you.”
