Something ive decided to include as a feature of the kiosk in my cafe is that you can pre-order what you want before entering the cafe which will do a few things, it will save the individual customers time at the kiosk as they will just have to scan their order and pay, but also because of this will hopefully cut down on queues within the store. I will likely look at making the app, if not just create some screenshots to get the idea

LIMITATIONS - HYGIENE
One of the main limitations when it comes to my contactless cafe idea is that although the payment and ordering kiosks remove the risk of spreading disease from person to person there's still a very present risk of contracting something off surfaces (like touchscreens) that are being used by many people. Because of this the hygiene of using these kiosks if they were to be touchscreen would still be compromised.
A POSSIBLE SOLUTION
A solution I had in mind to solve the hygiene problem caused by touch screens or buttons would be to allow the user to interact with the kiosk interface through motion sensors by waving their hand over the screen which would be mirrored on the program. I will be looking at technology similar to what was used for the Xbox Kinect where it would track the users motions to control the console. Hopefully this way any kind of physical contact with the screen and or buttons will be extremely limited and will greatly reduce the spread of diseases including COVID-19. Pictured above is my diagram for how it might work

Ive started thinking about and planning for my final project for programming, which will be something similar to Frogger. I did some of the simple stuff to code today as a starting off point, for example having the enemies (cars etc. in frogger) go across the screen (in the video above) as well as working on some of the artwork.
Updated speedpaint footage for my vlog :)

Worked on some simple models of my cafe to help visualize the interfaces/spaces within the project. It gave me a good idea of what I need to do to change things around. Next I will look at annotating these screenshots I got to put down in words what exactly needs to change and what ill need to look at for my next models/sketches.
Ill also do a write up about the interfaces within the cafe and what they afford etc.

The Marshmallow Challenge
What happened?
Because of the limited amount of people in my house we had one person per team. I gave them their instructions and observed how each person built their tower differently. Everyone's tower stayed up by itself for at least a few seconds after the timer went.
What were the limitations?
Some limitations I observed that might have been different if it were just BCT Students was things like each players backgrounds. One of the participants has had a lot of experience with engineering and building in their life and therefore had quite an advantage as well as another who does BCT and knows about the experiment already. These things will have had a large effect on how each person completed the challenge.
Other reflections
The challenge made me think about how it would have worked with teams of multiple people. Each person, even with their own struggles within the challenge seemed very self directed and had their own plan they were putting out. It made me wonder what teams would be like and if it would still end up being one person largely directing the project, and what would have to be done to make sure everyone was sharing responsibilities within a project group.
COVID-19 Challenge
Contactless Cafe
What is it? Who does it help? Who will I share my idea with?
The COVID-19 crisis element I will be responding to is the need for limited physical contact and social distancing. My solution for this is to design a contactless cafe, where the ordering and payment as well as serving of food is done through payment kiosks, serving windows and an app for ordering food.
The main group that will be helped with the contactless cafe are those who are vulnerable to disease (people with weakened immune systems and elders) as it will hopefully limit the spread of not only COVID-19 but other infectious diseases that can be spread through human contact. In the future it may also help people outside of this group in other ways, such as hearing-impaired people that can easily use the app/kiosks rather than trying to communicate with the server, people with severe cases of social anxiety who find it difficult to order food as well as people who English is their second language could use the app in their 1st language for easier communication
The contactless cafe is needed as it allows people to continue with a part of their everyday life like getting a coffee in the morning or grabbing lunch when out, but in a way that helps to limit the spread of diseases like COVID-19. Also, being mostly automated means that it will help further us technologically and integrate more helpful and intelligent technology into everyday life.
I would like to share my idea with other people who would be interested in larger scale solutions to the problems at hand. I would like to discuss with others who would like to design something such as a building or business to respond to the COVID-19 crisis as opposed to singular products or apps. This is because I believe their feedback would be more accurate and specific to what I'm doing. I will likely do this by talking to the people in my course through forums to find people with
Why is it important? Why is it unique?
I believe this idea is important in two major ways. The first being that, by eliminating as much human physical contact as possible, it will greatly reduce the spread of diseases including COVID-19, but allows people to continue on in their everyday life and give people jobs during the pandemic, providing psychological and moral as well as economic benefits. The second reason the idea is important is because it has benefits outside of the current crisis, such as helping to further integrate future technology into people's lives and make more everyday tasks like going to a cafe, more automated and convenient. Also like I mentioned earlier, incorporating the use of apps into ordering and serving goods allows people who otherwise would have difficulty with face to face interactions, including the hearing impaired, non-English speakers, those who suffer with social anxiety etc. This idea would not only help relieve problems caused by the COVID-19 crisis but it would continue to benefit many groups of society whose needs are often ignored.
I believe my idea is unique because of the pure scale, I want to create a whole new business and in theory I would like to create a widespread uptake in incorporating technology to increase efficiency in as many places as possible. I'm trying to look for a solution not only for the problems caused by COVID-19 but for life beyond it, and not just to solve a problem but to just make the way we do things a bit better.
What are some limitations?
When it comes to limitations, considering the physical size of my project there is the major limitation that I cannot actually build and then run the business of the cafe. But besides this I can focus on smaller more theoretical problems and limitations that I would need to think of solutions for. Firstly I would need to find a way to make the kiosks more hygienic when it comes to using them. Obviously taking out the human interaction will lower the risk of passing something too and from the cashier, there is still risk when it comes to touching the screen to order from as many people will be using it and could pass something onto the surface of the screen. Another problem I would like to find a solution too would be that the job positions would be decreased as neither waitresses nor cashiers would be needed anymore, It's incredibly important to keep jobs available and I would need to consider how to do this.
Intro Week 7 Questions/Reflection
How are my views on Drawing/Sketching changing?
After today's intro lesson i’m starting to see ways the design process (physically and psychologically) is different and far more complex than what we did in High school. For example the marshmallow challenge really made me think about how, I do in fact make assumptions about people and projects when designing anything really, and how it can in turn make things more difficult down the road. I will definitely look at making fewer assumptions when creating/designing anything really.
How do I feel about celebrated creators sharing their long and painful journey (multiple years, thousands of trials)?
I personally feel as though its important to see and admire successful creations from a distance and take it with a grain of salt. I think its more important to see and discuss the creative process and mentality they had throughout their life and how that helped them to create, rather than focus on what they specifically have made and the trials that came with it. In all honesty it also feels like just a way to earn more respect for what they have done on top of the successful outcome, and maybe they do that to further justify spending years working on something, which Is kind of understandable.
How can I resourcefully prototype with what I have at hand?
By drawing a lot. I feel like, while its not a physical object, drawing really helps me to visualize and see the flaws in my ideas, and its incredibly resourceful because all I need is a pencil and paper (as well as my computer+Photoshop) to create thousands of prototypes. Something that can also help with this is showing my drawings/sketches to other people, who often more easily see changes that can be made. I can also make 3D models and spaces to simulate using the product. With all of that considered I will still need to make a physical product, but hopefully with a lot of planning and sketches I can limit the amount of actual prototypes Ill need to make to get to a somewhat polished idea.

I forgot to post any pictures or videos of people using our studio project from before the lock down so here they are :), it was mostly successful, the only problems came after use when the buttons became either too sensitive or not sensitive enough but it was pretty good for a first prototype.

I was having difficulty understanding the context free art application and making original code, so for now I just took some of the examples given and changed just a few numbers in different parts of the code to see what would happen and got some different results. It was interesting to see how changing just one number could change the result drastically, and other times it would barely change. Ill post the others in the next few posts (the first image is the original code untouched)
