The human brain has bandwidth. When too much is going on, it’s like a coffee shop with a hundred people on laptops and one wifi connection. Only little bits get through, only little tasks get done. . I tend to say yes to cool things. New projects. Good things. Great ideas. I like to be a part of beautiful things. And I don’t begrudge that. But I’m hoping to finish the first draft of my book by May, which means I need to streamline. I work best with immediate visible deadlines. I remember back in the day, I would have massive papers looming, and I couldn’t work on them til the very last minute. I saw my classmates hammering away for weeks, and I would do all this menial prep work, get my sources lined up, organized on my desk, but I couldn’t start writing. Something was blocking me. I couldn’t think clearly without a fire under my ass, a deadline removing all distraction and funneling my blizzard thoughts into a clear mountain stream. I would start the day before, or even the morning of. And write like a madman foaming at the keys. Smoke rising from my fingers. . Think of all the art, the projects, the business ideas that are never born due to distraction, due to busy-ness. I think people build houses on the graves of an itch, of a vision, and then wonder why the house is haunted. This year is an exorcism. . I’ll be clearing my head in the mountains by a crappy little fire, and organizing my words in coffee shops around Nashville and LA. These are my plans, and my deadlines, and my fires. To clear the brush, the shrubs, blocking my view, and burn them. . 📷: @spencer_r_scott
