Closed starter for @eli-says
“Shit, shit… Come on.” He pleaded, gently tapping the dashboard of his truck, trying to convince it to start. “Please… Don’t do this to me.” He whispered, as if it could hear him. Realizing it just wouldn’t start, Jake let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding and hopped out of the car, scanning the parking lot for someone else with a car to give him a boost. He quickly eyed a raven-haired boy standing by a hearse. Eli Goldsworthy was the last person Jake would like to ask for help–it wasn’t exactly a secret that the two weren’t friends–but he could be civil if it meant getting home sooner than waiting for a tow-truck. “Yo, Eli!” He shouted across the parking lot, “Do you mind giving me a boost?”
Nearly home free, Eli was never off the hook that easily, today being no different. Hearing Jake’s plea, the boy could feel the frown sinking into his face, not wanting anything to do with the matter. “Yes, yes I do...” he whispered to himself, keeping a casually enough blank face. Despite his mind’s protest and the overwhelming urge to up and leave, his feet urged forward to where Jake’s frazzle was taking place, letting out an involuntary sigh as he did. “What’s wrong with it?”
this was a lot of money. more than eli had seen or thought he’d ever see of his own at one time, but it was indeed his. the means were questionable to say the least, but clare didn’t have to know that and he didn’t have to acknowledge it. money was money, and the first thing he thought to spend it on was the girlfriend he knew had been far too patient with him. it wasn’t changed behavior, but it was something. it was time spent in each other’s company, and that was something they’d had too little of lately, eli’s adrenaline begging to change that. no forewarning, eli rushed to clare’s house, making a number of stops along the way to gather supplies. once at the household in question, he rapped fervently on the door, standing up straight as he waited for an answer.
53: What is the last thing you did before you went to bed last night?
“Talked to Clare for a while. Read a few chapters of an old Goosebumps book I found in the garage. It was a good time.”
52: Do you believe everything happens for a reason?
“I believe that certain things are predetermined and it’s up to you to define your destiny.”
17: Ever made out in the bathroom?
“I can’t say I’ve ever had that, uh, carnal pleasure.”
70 horrible questions ... Fuck it

lukesbakers:
it was no shock that the bakers weren’t for everyone. some less than others, though it hadn’t bothered luke at all. ❝ what can i say? i like a good musical that isn’t completely centered around church - or has anything to do with church at all. ❞ luke admitted as he was picking up his coffee to take another drink. ❝ maybe, or it’ll cause an uproar and who knows what we might have to deal with then. ❞
admittedly, eli didn’t expect much out of luke, typically finding him fairly predictable but that - a penchant for musicals? that came as a surprise. “you like musicals?” he pressed, an eyebrow raised high. “i’d like to think that if there was going to be a riot, there would have by now.”
pacinipng:
the ice cream in her bowl was just starting to barely melt, making it that much easier to cut through and that was entirely how lola had liked it. the silence wasn’t so bad, as it had given them both time to eat their food without having to worry about it getting cold, or in lola’s case - getting warm. once she’d heard his question, she’d picked up a napkin taking a bit longer than necessary to wipe at her mouth before answering. ❝ it was okay - just worked a lot, kept my mind busy. i think it’s better that way, too much sitting around could be bad - ya know? ❞
he did know, all too well the trouble lola spoke of. it was a battle eli had always waged within himself, and even if it was different from what lola had meant - that he assumed -, it was still something to sympathize with. “yeah, i know what you mean,” he nodded simply, keeping things at least moderately upbeat.
pacinipng:
this friendship was something that lola had really enjoyed building up over the summer, and of course she had hoped that it would last throughout the year as well - but only time would tell for that. it was just easy, and simple, and even if they didn’t know much about one another, lola had really only thought that it had made the whole thing easier. ❝ ah, that’s a compliment that i’ll have to take to heart. keep it in mind. and anytime that you doubt something on my menu will be good - i’ll just remind you of it. ❞
“i’m sure you will,” he chided playfully, scarfing down another too big mouthful of the meal. he hadn’t realized until now how hungry he’d been, spending the next few moments in silence aside from packages peeling and shuffling and a few stray toppings falling out with a splat into the container, only to be swiftly retrieved in between his fingers. “so aside from feeding me all summer, how was your break?”
lukesbakers:
❝ yeah she’s pretty good at that getting to things in the knick of time right before someone else can. ❞ it was really more of a weird super power than anything else, though luke couldn’t fault becky for that at all. it was probably pretty endearing to some people, as he knew that his sister was always willing to step up and do what was needed. ❝ i mean, you’re right there but your version of a musical would probably be better. ❞
“i’m well aware,” he snarked playfully. initially it was one of the most infuriating qualities of the girl, but they’d come to find some middle ground once the drama of the play was through... ironically. “i appreciate your vote of confidence,” he laughed in spite of it being against his own blood. “we’ll see what happens. maybe her take on things is what the school needs more right now.”
pacinipng:
this was a friendship - if that was the word, that lola hadn’t exactly expected, though since it had happened she really couldn’t see herself without chatting most days with eli. he was easily to talk to, non judgemental, and he hadn’t seemed to really care about the same vague things that others did. she’d taken another bite of her ice cream spoon then cutting up the banana on the dessert as she was looking up at him, happy to learn that he was also enjoying what she’d brought over for him. “oh good! i was hoping that you wouldn’t completely hate it!” the girl grinned as she was picking up a napkin to wipe at her mouth. “told you that i wouldn’t put anything on my menu that wasn’t good.”
in general it wasn’t hard to please the boy when it came to food, but all of lola’s offerings thus far were good in his book, items he’d never have thought to order on his own. he’d come to trust the spunky girl’s advice, and so far he hadn’t been led astray. it was a strange thing to bond over, swapped meals, but eli didn’t have complaints. “nope, you won me over again, i could never in my right mind doubt your genius.”
lukesbakers:
it had almost seemed like everyone knew what they’d wanted to do, or what path they were taking in high school, and while luke did have hockey – that was it. if something happened, he broke a bone, didn’t get drafted ; anything - his entire plan would crumble and he’d be left with nothing. his grades weren’t good enough to get a real scholarship anywhere and that alone was enough to make him double think everything. ❝ ‘m sure you’ll think of something. there’s always a musical going around somewhere. ❞ the male had finally spoken as he was shrugging his shoulders, not knowing if it would really help at all or not, but hell - at least he was trying.
he would kick himself later on for skipping out on his final production, he knew that much, but his head just hadn’t been in it lately. maybe this was the kick he needed. “yeah, well. if i don’t come up with something soon, your sister will beat me to it - again,” he remarked, able to find amusement in the situation now that the air was cleared between himself and the other baker sibling. “musicals are her thing anyway, i can’t sing,” he noted, mirroring the shrug.
