“we may have to, we’re not doing the greatest job, i swear, i’ve lost half the pieces,” autumn remarked with a frown, her forehead wrinkled as she stared at the floor where all the pieces were. she just wanted to do something nice for andy and carly while they were at their doctor’s apartment; she felt so damn helpless in the situation they’d all found themselves in and she really wanted to try and do something for them so they’d know that even though they were terrified, they had people in their corner. what was it that eli’s dad had told her when he’d helped them move in? people needed people. “they could be written in clear english in big, bold letters and i’d probably still end up putting it together upside down and backwards,” she grumbled, ditching the instructions to sit in between his legs and lean back against his chest, holding his hand tightly. “i wish there was something i could do, they’re so overwhelmed,” she said in a small voice, chewing her bottom lip. maybe it was the terrifying situation that carly and andy were in, but autumn suddenly needed to be very close to eli and to hold onto him, a tangible, physical reminder that she had him and that they were good.
eli had held onto autumn, and rocked them a little bit in place, and tried to think of something that would calm her down. in hindsight- it wasn’t the end of the world that they couldn’t put a crib together, but he knew that it had been stressful lately, but that didn’t mean that it was the end of the world, eli and autumn had dealt with worse things in their life, this was just a little blimp in the timeline that would eventually be passed over in later days. “at least after this, we’ll be able to put a crib together when we have kids,” he rubbed her arms, up and down carefully. it was an odd thing to think about them having kids, because it clearly wasn’t for them now, but, eventually soon. they had been together for three years almost, it was exciting year nervewracking at the same time. he missed his sister every day, but he stopped thinking about her in the same way that he used to. it was less, and less, much like his situation with his mother- but it just proved that he was growing up. they were growing up. “we’ll get it together. we just need a break, and then we can come back to it... it’s okay, autumn,”
