Hair carried memories

Starter with @elindamassey

Viserys stood before his mirror, his pale silver-gold hair cascading a little past his neck. But today, even his hair had betrayed him. His favorite bee-shaped clip, a tiny golden thing with inlaid amber wings, had twisted itself into a tangled snare. No matter how he tugged or smoothed, the strands refused to let go, knotted tight around the delicate metalwork.

He tugged, fingers clumsy and impatient, wincing as the tangles pulled at his scalp. Servants would fix it, he knew. His mother would scold him, tell him to sit still, let the maids work the knots free with gentle hands and perfumed oils. But Viserys did not feel like waiting. He did not feel like patience today.

With a last frustrated huff, he yanked at the strands again, but they only tightened further. His scalp ached, his patience frayed, and in a burst of childish fury, he seized a small dagger from his bedside. It was a name day present– a beautiful thing bejeweled with rubies, not truly weaponlike and more decorative but still sharp enough for this.

Just for a second, Vis hesitated, holding the dagger to the side of his pale hair, and a second was enough for him to be interrupted by the sound of his chamber door opening. He turned his head, scowling at the interrupter.

Elinda had volunteered to bring fresh linens up to Prince Viserys’ rooms. She had noticed the stacks of clean linens growing taller and taller in the depth of the castle, only to learn that the washing staff was lacking due to illness. Elinda grabbed the pile for Prince Viserys, promising to return for more of the linens for the young princes and princesses, before she made her way up the stairs to the prince’s room.

“My prince sorry for the interr-“ Elinda stopped in her tracks, half curtsying as she noticed what she had just walked into. “My sweet prince! What are you doing?” She asked in worry and quickly put the pile of linens down before approaching Viserys, undeterred by the scowl or the small knife in his hand.

She looked up and down, from the knife to the tangled mess of the prince’s hair, only then spotting the ornate bee the prince favored. “Viserys,” she said quietly and reached out, placing her hand delicately on his shoulder.

“Sit, let me help you? Either by combing out your clip or by fetching my scissors for a proper cut, rather than what mess your knife might leave you with?” She asked with a soft smile. “And please tell me, how this happened in the first place? You’re usually so adept at placing your clip. It’s been a while since you’ve needed any help with your hair or haircare.”

Viserys glared at Elinda, his scowl deepening as she approached. He hated being caught like this—helpless, frustrated, on the verge of doing something reckless. Worse still, she spoke to him in that soft, coaxing tone, as if he were a child on the verge of tears. He was not a child– Well he was but he would be grown soon and besides he was a prince of the realm– the legacy of the good king.

His fingers tightened around the dagger’s hilt as if to ward her off, but Elinda did not flinch. She never did. He huffed through his nose, sharply, but after a beat, he let his shoulders drop, his grip slacken.

“I do not need a proper cut,” he snapped, though the words lacked true heat. His hair was silver and gold, fine and pale and rare—precious. Not to be hacked away like some stable boy’s. But the more he thought of sawing through the strands himself, the less certain he became. He lowered the dagger to his lap, frowning.

Elinda’s fingers, light as silk, settled on his shoulder. The gesture was familiar. Steadying. It made his pride bristle and yet, begrudgingly, he allowed it.

“It was not my fault,” he muttered. “The clip caught wrong today, and when I tried to fix it, it only worsened. And then—” He gestured vaguely at his reflection, the mess of it, the failure. “I was not going to ruin it. I was only going to cut the part that was tangled.” A small, petty distinction, but one that mattered to him.

After a pause, his gaze flicked up to hers, wary. “You will not tell my mother?” It was not a plea. Not quite. But there was a shadow of worry behind the demand.

He had no patience for scoldings today.

“Why are you here?” he asked sharply.

“Linens,” Elinda explained and gestured back towards the pile she had placed by the door. “There’s a sickness with the staff, I volunteered to help,” she said easily.

“No one is saying it’s your fault, my prince,” she soothed softly as he seemed to relax, and he hoped he would let her help him. “Maybe one of the prongs got bent? I’ve tried that a few times, it makes quite the mess of hair. And you seem to have worked up quite the tangle.”

Elinda nodded as she listened to him. “Oh, I didn’t think you were going to cut off all your beautiful hair. Because then I would definitely have to tell your mother,” she added the last part with a playful smile. “Don’t fret, my prince. I will keep your secret.”

Once certain that he would accept her help, Elinda picked up the comb from his dressing table and a small container of hair oil. She turned the comb over, using the pick to carefully begin to untangle the knot below the pin.

“If it is a bend prong, I know just who can fix it,” she said, without taking her eyes off the task at hand. She picked up the oil and added a small drop to the tangle of silver and gold strands. She had been fascinated with the Targeryen hair for as long as she could remember. “Would you like me to braid your hair when we get this out?”

Ravens between King's Landing and Dragonstone

Dearest Helaena,

I hope this letter finds you well and in good health. I know it’s been a while since we last corresponded, but I feel fortunate that it does not mean that we have not been in touch. Last court season brought so many happy gatherings.

Winter has been announced and preparations around the castle and surrounding homes have been in effect for the last few moons. I feel fortunate that my position in court and my friendship with you allows me to prepare before many other low-borns are even aware of the hardships that seem to be approaching. I’ve gathered old wool and furs from the storages and is slowly helping the young royals build a proper winter wardrobe. Next will be preparing my own children.

Meredyth continuously asks of tales about the friendship between you and I. She does not quite believe that my childhood friend is Princess Helaena. Nor does she believe that I’ve visited Dragonstone in any other capacity, than as the then-princess Rhaenyra’s lady in waiting. I hope my tales will eventually persuade her.

How is young Jaehaera doing? Last we spoke you were ever so worried about her. And last I saw her she looked paler and wearier than I ever remember her looking. I do hope you’ve found the reason for her discomfort and have been able to help. As mothers it’s heartbreaking to feel helpless when it comes to our children, I vividly remember how hard it was when Ysabel struggled with nightmares of fire and death.

I wish there was a way for you to see the flowers Simon brought me the other day, in a celebration of Jack’s nameday. I’ve never seen flowers so rich in colours. They remind me of the butterflies you and I enjoy to watch in the summertime around the gardens of King’s Landing. Their scent reminds me of the sweet summer wine from Dorne.

I hope the winter won’t force us to stay apart longer than we are used to. I already miss your company in the capital, as does your family and my family. I pray that The Seven watches over you and your family and that we may soon embrace each other once more.

The turning of the seasons is no small matter, nor should its weight be underestimated. Let every lord and lady take heed, for the longest nights draw near, and with them, the cold breath of hardship. Grain stores must be tallied. Livestock must be secured. Walls must be mended, and the strong must see to the weak. This is no season for folly or pride but for preparation and prudence. Though we look to the skies and study the shifting patterns of the stars, winter’s strength will ultimately be measured not in days but in deeds. As each hearth burns and each hall resounds with voices calling for shelter and sustenance, the choices made by lords great and small will echo long after the snows melt away. Take this time to reflect not only on the cost of survival but on the bonds of kin and kingdom that might yet endure. The history of winters past tells us one truth: strength is drawn from unity, while division feeds the wolves that prowl in the dark. We urge all to act wisely, for while the days of summer bring growth and abundance, winter tests all things—land, lineage, and legacy. May the light of the Seven, the Old Gods, and every faith across the realm guide you, Archmaester Harrion, Keeper of the Keys, on behalf of the Conclave of the Citadel.

To the Lords, Ladies, and all amongst the esteemed peerage of Westeros, As white ravens announce another season's turn, it is my sincerest desire that the arrival of this correspondence in accompainament to the proclamation of a new winter's dawn provides respite, and reason to take heart, in the midst of our whole kingdom's commitment to preserving this era of prosperity regardless of what the coming season may bring to pass. Before the winter winds restrict travel and oblige your liegeships' absolute attention to the protection and care of our lands and its people, The Royal Court of King's Landing shall host it's second Formal session of 130 AC. Commencing the second week of the tenth moon, the forthcoming assembly will begin with The Smith's Day festivities and conclude after the celebrations for The Mother's Day draw to a close. With our ability to congregate for next year's observances of The Maiden's and The Father's Day highly suspect, the Crown intends to host outsized affairs for both holy days to demonstrate to The Seven Heavens all the gratitude for their unending blessings this winter is like to necessitate us to sustain in isolation, and in equal measure, to honor the ties that bind our peerage which have allowed us to face whatever harshness the coming moons may hold with optimism and a brave face. Whilst winter preparations consume our days, the generosity this court is prepared to bestow on those who grant their favor in attendance is not to be overlooked. In-keeping with the tradition of The Good King and His Grace, My Father, King Viserys—whose absence weighs heaviest for so many, and foremost myself, with the arivval of the first winter since his passing—as mine own nameday will come around in the midst of these events , I shall not ask for gifts, but instead offer them to those most outstanding in their contributions to allowing the start of my reign, and our kingdom as a whole, to thrive. Champions of The Court may be named for martial skill and exemplary service to Westeros alike, bestowed new measures of wealth to ease winter's burden, afforded safe harbor and positions within the walls of The Red Keep should they choose to seek it, and even greater honors than bestowed in years pasat on the seven young sets of intendeds chosen to represent our kingdom's future before the eyes of The Smith, our most blessed of this season. This invitation is not delivered flippantly nor without heed as to oncoming danger, but to remind its every reader that whatever they must do to preserve the interests of those sworn to them and who they serve in return, the unprecedented possibilities presented with this season's turn are a mandate to take every matter into account, and then meet the decision with steadfast dedication; As rulers, lieges, and regents, these verdicts define not just our legacies, but the very shape of the future for us all. Seven only know what this winter holds, but with these words, you are here by invited to meet it in the glow of our Court's light amidst the dawning dark.
