she lovingly rolled her eyes at the older woman. she had to admit that it was nice to have someone looking after her the way elisa did because she missed out on that her whole childhood. “adorable? is that something i should be going for in my early twenties?” kasey took the sunhat off of her head and placed it back on the rack that it came from. she felt as if she didn’t need it and she was already having to pick and choose what clothes she was going to get.

at the mention of the new years party, kasey excitedly caught up to elisa and smiled. “yeah, i have a dress that i packed once i found out about the party.” her dress was a short green one, with revealing cleavage and a beautiful neckline that she was excited to wear. but she didn’t have shoes or jewelry. “i just don’t have everything else. like heels or jewelry.”

Elisa’s lips quickly quirked following the younger woman’s comment. “Semantics, darling, would you prefer beautiful? Lovely? Drop dead gorgeous?” Elisa asked. She was right, though—adorable belonged to toddlers and puppies, and Kasey was neither. Good lord, and it very likely made her seem older than she wanted. “Let me help you with accessories—at least jewelry. We should absolutely search around for jewelry anyway, but I have something in mind that will look exquisite,” Elisa told her. “Well,” she added, “Admittedly more than one thing, but I don’t to overwhelm you quite yet.” 

With a wink and a parting glance around the store, Elisa gave a brief huff and settled her hands upon her hips. “I don’t think we’re going to have much luck with shoes here, little Kay,” she said. 

Her mock disappointment whirled away with the flash pearly whites and she nodded towards the cashier. “Let’s check out or skedaddle to another store,” Elisa suggested. “And on the way, you can tell me who you’re hoping to snag a kiss from for New Year’s~”

kasey smiled at elisa’s comments and praise. it had been something she had craved from an older woman for so much of her life that once she started getting it from elisa it was hard to let go of the motherly figure. she playfully rolled her eyes at the sunhat comment. “momma bear, chill. it’s december and somewhat cold outside. i don’t think i need the sunhat.” kasey did as she was told anyway and put the hat on her head, looking for the approving look from the older woman.

“Well, even if you decide not to get the sunhat, I’ll tell you it looks dashing on you, pet.” Elisa paid another quick glance toward the younger woman before nimbler fingers and quick eyes went to work combing through racks of clothes. “Frankly I don’t think we’ve found something that you don’t make look absolutely adorable,” she continued. Except for the short-shorts—those Elisa nixed and not because they were too short, but because she didn’t like tangerine on anybody.

“What we should be doing is looking for something for you to wear for New Years,” Elisa told her. “Unless you’ve got something tucked away in your hotel room.” Elisa certainly did, at any rate. 

She didn’t take the entirety of her wardrobe on the trip, but one could safely say she would’t be wanting for anything. And yet, would that stop her from buying another six or seven dazzling dresses? Absolutely not.

He frowned to himself as if a sense of doubt carried over with her very statement. “Well.. if you like it well enough, I wouldn’t feel so wasteful trying things.” After all, all expenses paid trip, right? Abel was almost tempted to ask the woman about that bit. Was this adventure really free or would they turn into indentured servants once the year was up? Owing a laundry bill far greater than any money Abel could hope to make his entire life?

It was almost embarrassing to admit, “I do like alcohol.” Liquor didn’t fail to take edge off of the stuttering boy. Especially while in new places and among strangers. He flushed again as she ordered for him and hid away slightly behind his menu. Part of Halvorsen was grateful. He hadn’t gotten used to this trip yet and would have a hard time even asking a local where to find a bathroom. Part of the menu fell while she came to clasp his hand which made Abel only blush more out of surprise. Both eyes were stuck on hers, however. “N-no… you uh… kn-know what you’re d… doing…” Again, the boy assumed. “D… so–do you trust this trip? Like… it is too good to be true, of course…”

Abel’s question was one she’d tucked away quietly on the first of several connecting flights before arriving in Greece. From her experience, when things appeared too good to be true, they generally were. Elisa’s only saving grace was her uncanny amount of luck and her ability to slide herself as easily in and out of dangerous situations.

“There’s rarely anything in this life that’s truly free,” Elisa said, and affirmed his suspicion without openly admitting it. “Be ready for anything, Abel, and remember to always consider consequence A, B, C, and alternative routes X, Y, Z.”

“Drum up a theory, pet. It’s helpful to understand potential motive—oh, and even better with liquor in the belly.” The woman’s eyes lit up with the sight of two large mixed drinks and the two doubles of vodka. She plucked up one of the shooters and raised it toward Abel. “Cheers, mon lapin, to getting ourselves into more trouble than we truly realize~”

“oh! what about this one?” kasey picked up another scarf from the rack while trying to balance the other clothing items she had picked up from other racks around the store. this one was a pale pink color and she liked how it looked, but she needed another opinion. kasey smiled as she clumsily threw it around her neck and gave off goofy modeling poses, awaiting another opinion on the items she was choosing.

“Oh how cute!”

“Darling you look lovely with it—why not pair a sunhat too, hm? It’s awfully bright out and I’d hate to see you burn your sweet face,” Elisa suggested as she turned towards the row of hats beside it. “Mmmhm~” The older woman purred in satisfaction as she plucked up one possibility. “Try this.”

Patting down his dark hair, Abel shrugged both arms further up atop the table where he slouched over the menu carefully. He had taken a liking to the puzzle of figuring out familiar and likewise foreign words off the menu. Making sense of it all. His typically unchallenged mind was very alert, had been since arrival and venturing out into these new streets. “Lamb’s good. Don’t they serve it cold here?” Now that he was uncertain of.. “With yogurt and things…”

It was clear his nose was turned up just slightly. He didn’t know how to behave. “Have you eaten anything quite like that before?” The young Czech asked. “You must be well traveled.” He only assumed.

“Oh sweet boy, I’ve eaten that and much more,” Elisa admitted. “Frankly you don’t know what you’re missing out on until you give it a go. Even if you hate the dish, at least you’ve tried it, oui?”

“Besides,” she emphasized as she gleamed over her own menu, “I figure we’ll be here a couple hours. Let’s order a drink or three and after that, I bet you’ll be in the mood to try something out of the norm.” When the waiter risked by, Elisa’s skilled tongue drawled out a quick round of drinks and several dishes—effectively choosing what they would be eating and drinking for the first part of the evening, at any rate.

“Lend me a little of your trust, Abel,” Elisa said as she clasped a gentle hand over his. Her thumb smoothed over a small patch of skin and a playful smiled quirked along the edges of her lips, lazily stretching her mouth. “It isn’t terribly hard, is it?”

Rolling on his stomach he groaned when the blankets were removed from him, and shot a glare at her. Of course he couldn’t be mad at her but he could pout and glare at her for waking him up so early. Even if she was right and they had plans for that day. It was just so much work waking up and living…

“Remind me why you’re my best friend again,” he muttered watching her get dressed from his spot on his stomach. Soon he would get up and get ready himself but for now he just watched letting the sleep leave his eyes slowly. “Two museums? Which ones?” He asked before yawning and stretching some. “It’s our first full day here why are you making me wooork?” 

“I was baklava,” he said with one more groan and stood up. Walking over to his suitcase he dropped off here last night he pulled out a pair of briefs and jeans and began to put them on. “I dated a guy once who was from here. Got me hooked on baklava and now I need the fresh stuff or I’ll die. Die, El, die.”

“We’ll be exploring the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art,” Elisabeth told him. Threads of excitement stitched along her words, though in the only subtle way the thief knew how to convey her giddiness. It wouldn’t be the first time she used Alexander in a heist, but it would be a rare instance she treated him to something from within the museum.

If he was good, of course.

“There’s hardly any reason we can’t get baklava for breakfast, Lex—don’t worry your pretty little head,” she continued as she nursed the warm cup of coffee. “We’ll have all of those lovely little cravings satiated by the end of the night.”

“Sea urchin salad? At least the chefs are up front in this part of town, but I think I’ll pass…”

“Come on sweet pea, look over the menu a little more. We’ll find something you like,” Elisabeth assured the other through a short bought of laughter. Admittedly, she would have liked very much to see Abel choke down a bite. “Although, you know the old saying, you never know what you like until you try it, hm?” She asked in a short lived attempt to coax the other.

Ember was standing in front of Mattonella which she’d heard had great coffee and amazing gelato. The line for the shop was out the door at this moment in time and she was the last one to join the line. She normally hated waiting but just for today she was determined to be as patient as she possibly. Pulling her cell phone out of her pocket which she’d already switched out the sim card so she could actually get service while she was out of the country scrolling through her instagram feed that she didn’t take notice of someone coming to stand behind her.

This generation was perpetually engrossed in the virtual reality lurking within cellphones and laptops—the bright screen sucked in youth with an unrelenting force, and frankly Elisa couldn’t blame them. It was a second reality, as real and tangible and impactful as the physical world around them.

“I can promise the immersion in this gorgeous country is infinitely better than whatever’s going on in the tiny bright world,” Elisabeth spoke. She wasn’t condescending by any means—each word gently swaddled with warmth and threads of persuasion. “Look around darling—even standing in line for coffee, adventure awaits.”

“You’re with the travel group, right?” She followed. “I saw you earlier at the hotel and could only assume—have you visited Greece before?”

“No.” Came the voice from under two comforters and a blanket. There was at least three more curled up at the end of the bed just in case he got cold in the middle of the night. The younger boy knew she was right but he had spent all night staying up trying to catch up on Real Housewives to the point he lost track of time. If he could get just a few more moments of sleep in…

Sighing he wiggled around on her bed some more, thankful that she let him stay with her last night he continued to hide for just a few more seconds. Then he poked his head out just enough that she could see one of his eyes, he grumbled out, “but did you add extra extra sugar?” Yup, it was going to be one of those mornings if he was expected to get up and get in his clothes with his hair perfectly in place before they went out for the day. 

“I wouldn’t dream of skimping on the sugar, my pet,” Elisa assured the considerably younger man. It didn’t take years of knowing him to realize Alexander had something that bordered on addiction with sugar and sweets alike—frankly it only took the first few hours. She remembered ordering two of everything on the dessert menu that late night in Chicago, and for months after he was glued to her, and she to him.

“Now drink up, we have breakfast plans and two museums to explore today.” The thief walked round to the spacious closet in her private bedroom. She should have counted herself lucky to land a room on the third floor of the hotel and right back into the lap of luxury and comfort she was used to, but frankly Elisa could mold any place into her home. Her teenaged years consisted of constant moving and for a short time living on the streets—until she met her late-husband and partner in crime.

“I’ve also left the evening open—tell me where you want to go and we’ll go there,” she said as she pulled on her button up shirt. Grey and worn and unlike a bulk of her high fashion wardrobe, the top held more sentimental value and inflamed the confidence oozing from the woman. She it coupled with a pair of high waisted jeans and vans and impatiently yanked the first of many layered blankets from the bed. “Alexander,” she repeated, much more firmly than before, “Up.”

“Alexander Adams, you need to get up sooner or later, and mind you the emphasis here is on sooner.” Elisabeth rounded with two cups of coffee and placed one beside the nightstand beside her bed where the man lay still half asleep.

“You’re lucky I came bearing coffee instead of icy water. We’re late enough as it is.” As though she were one to talk. She still needed to properly dress, but in her defense she knew it would take him much longer to rise and ready himself than it would for her to slap on the outfit she’d plotted out an hour before. “And yes, I added extra sugar.”

“okay okay…wait up!” the brunette called out as he ran trying to keep up “where did you say we were going again?”

“The Acropolis Museum—but you’re really going to have to keep up, darling.” Elisabeth spoke with the same sort of sweetened inflection as a grade school teacher or a seasoned mother. The latter was more apt, considering both of her children were now fully grown.

“I’m sure you’ll love it, and if not, I’ll treat you to drinks after~ I know a little place.” For Elisa, the drinks would signal a private preemptive victory. It was fun winning this all worldly vacation, but it would be more exciting to collect rarities from each country visited. Hell, each city would be even better. She paused slipped her arm through the younger man’s and a curling smile caught on the edges of lips painted with a deep maroon. “That said, my bet is we’re going to have a fine time together.”
