Day 31: Learning to Draw a Cartoon Character

As part of the figure drawing studies i have started to work through the Figure drawing for Cartoon Characters Udemy Course by Maria Avramova. Along with learning to figure draw, the course also includes lessons on learning to draw characters in motion, as well as unlocking our own artistic style. Both of which I need help with.

The four above drawings are different stages of drawing a cartoony boy, staring with the body structure, then adding more details and finally refining the drawing.

Day 30: Gesture drawings

Today, I continued my studies in gesture drawing using stick figures. Hopefully with some daily practice i will get a lot faster and better at this, which will help my animations.

Day 29: Starting to Learn Figure Drawing

Okay, I have noticed that I really need to learn to draw gestures, figures, poses, etc., as I am struggling with the drawing side of the animation. There is so much i want to do, but don't have the drawing skills. So I have started right at the beginning with primitives, to use them to build figures. It will be a long process, but I will get there with practice.

Day 25: Primary and Secondary Action

This animation shows the primary and secondary action. The ball is the primary and the cloth/cape is the secondary action.

Day 24: Head Squash and Stretch Drawing

Today I have started working on the squash and stretch principle demonstrating using a mouth open and close. The animation is not ready yet, should be finished tomorrow, so here i picture of the head.

Day 22: Female Three-Quarter View

Today I decided to practice drawing and attempted the side view of a manga female head, following the steps of Mastering Manga with Mark Crilley. This was a big learning experience and I learnt a lot more about Grease Pencil's layering, brushes and materials to create the drawing.

Day 21: Slow-In, Slow-Out

Completed the animation of the pendulums showing the Slow-In, Slow-Out principle of the 12 principles of animation.

Day 20: Slow-In, Slow-Out

Currently working on the slow-in, slow-out animation, which is taking a little bit longer than expected. The left pendulum animation is finished, will finish off the right pendulum tomorrow.

Day 19: My First Anime Head

For the last 18 days I have been focusing on learning to animate, but I had quickly realised that I need to learn to draw, especially as the goal is to create a short anime scene/film at the end of the 365 day journey. So i attempted my first anime character head following the Female Front View lesson from the book, Mastering Manga with Mark Crilley, using Blender Grease Pencil.

I started by sketching the head and then drew over the pen lines. Here is the sketch i drew initially.

Soon I will attempt to add some colour and shadows to future drawings.
