I think all the talk about the technical side of what Max did is kind of missing the point, because from a purely technical standpoint he likely didn’t do anything wrong (like Valtteri keeping his pole in Monza despite the session being red-flagged).
But a bit like the situation with Renault, the true problem is the ‘sporting’ regulations and not the technical ones.
He saw the crash, ergo he should have automatically slowed down. Period, end of story. I mean he did go off the racing line and that’s what probably slowed him down in that mini-sector rather than him lifting, which is possibly why he feels he didn’t slow down at all and yet the telemetry shows him going slightly slower. To me that’s what the discussion should focus on because if it’s purely left to technicalities then there’s nothing in it.
I think that if he knew the session was flagged and no one was going to beat his time he might have done so, but that really isn’t relevant because he should have slowed down more regardless.
I’m glad he didn’t lie about it or even just try to fudge the truth a bit, he’s a sweet dumb bitch but to his credit he’s an honest one, and if he gets a penalty then he’ll get a penalty ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
