Evaluation
Premonition Short film evaluation
Our task was to pitch an idea that could be developed into a script for a short film to then be shot in groups. Myself and 3 other students, Annie, Emma and Herbert where given a script ‘preminition’ written by lucy. The story was based around 1 main character, cast members also include the main characters mum and a friend. Firstly we all was given a script to go over individually and familiarise our self and understand what the story was about. Once we came together to discuss how each of us read the script and what we thought about it we then started to brainstorm ideas and techinques in which we would use to film. We held a meeting with the script writer to discuss some possible changes and our reasons why we wanted to change certain things and she agreed with our suggestions, our Director Annie then made a slight few changes and we adjusted the script, the main change was beginning scene and also an location.
I was given the job role ‘Pre-Production Manager’ I ensured all pre-production was produced before shoot dates I also done sound on each shoot. Both shoots where held at my house, as a group we discussed possible places we could film and we all agreed we could use different rooms in my house the film the majority of the scenes.
We used a cast website called ‘Casting Call Pro’ to hire unpaid actors. We wrote up a profile for each part and had a very successful response of over 30 actors interested in our project and held auditions for each participant who responded, however unfortunately not everyone turned u but we did hire a very enthusiastic main actor and the mum. Both actors where very excited to work alongside us.
We completed our filming within two full days and didn’t have any problems. We shot each shot from different angles and took lots of different cover shots to we had enough footage to use in Post-Production.
After our shoot days we then returned the equipment and uploaded our footage. We renamed all the files and began our edit firstly editing together a rough cut, cutting together each scene in order and adding cover shots when needed, our edit was coming along at a good pace and we were very pleased with the footage however some shots where slightly over exposed but we tried our best to resolve that problem in colour correction.
Conclusion
Overall, I think my group worked really well within the team and although we was given a challenging script we managed to get some really good footage. It was the first time working alongside professional actors which I really enjoyed as they was very enthusiastic towards our project which made the footage look very professional.

Music video
Music Video – Shot List
Ø We plan to use 2x Black magic cameras and 1 cannon, as well as using the track to create movement within our shots.
Ø We will also have various close ups of the performance, of the instruments as well as the band members, the instrument close ups will be used as our shots in the video, particularly for the instrumental solos in the song.
Ø Our wide establishing shots will be filmed using the black magic camera on a track.
Ø Our other black magic will be locked off, filming the individual performers
Ø Close ups will be filmed using our canon.
Custom ideas
In a meeting with the men amongst kings band, we discussed with them our ideas for the video, as well as their own. We suggested a narrative approach to the video, however the band were not keen, and instead wanted a live studio session style to their video, purely focusing on a dark live performance of their song. They wanted a video similar to Paramores ‘’misery business’’ and ‘’playing god’’. So we decided to look at locations that we could easily make dim, and dark but still add interesting beams of light to.
Andrea Essay
What is the definition of great editing?
In the essay I will be explaining what I think makes a great editor, Editors have to be creative and have a set of skills to be able to create a flow in which they can tell a story or provide information within different styles of work, for example creating a music video edit will be a lot different from editing a documentary. Editing is part of post-production and is the finishing part of creating a video for a client, it’s the process where all parts of the video come together to create the finishing piece.
Editing is a creative skill, Editors discover different skills for different types of videos. When producing any type of edit the editor should get to understand the audience the product will be aimed at, in order to promote and sell the video to that specific audience the style you create you video in can have a huge effect on this.
A great editor will follow a professional workflow, firstly contacting the client to find out what the clients wants are, to collect all footage and remove unwanted footage whilst choosing the best footage, create a flow in which it achieves its goal, create a rough cut, Add any effects, graphics or music (you can improve videos by adding extra elements.)
All editors should be passionate about their work to have the best outcome of each edit. Creativity is key when editing. Different clients expect different types of edits, editors have to be able to adapt from creating documentary’s to music videos, which are very different videos to edit. Documentary’s usually use a slow paced structure. They include interviews, cover shots and this can be challenging to make interesting but with the right footage and making sure the edit includes what the client wants they can be very effective especially to the audience the client is trying the reach out to.
Any type of edit whether it’s a music video, corporate video or documentary should make the target audience interested and even expand of there audience if possible to give the client a wider range of audience. The edit should make viewers not want to stop watching. Editors can use the skill of putting together footage to engage audience into watching on. For each different type of edit the editor will need to apply a different technique of editing
Editing a music video is somewhat similar when understanding what the client wants, the way a music video is created will have to relate to the style of music, for example a heavy metal band will have a more quick paced video that an individual singer singing a slow song and they will be edited in very different ways to sell to the target audience the band have.
Colour correction has a huge impact visually on your video as it can make the shot look better, just by tweaking and perfecting each shot, this can benefit you as you can change the lighting of the shot slightly without having to re-shot and get more footage to improve the video visually.
Overall I think it is key for an editor to create a piece of work exceeding the client’s expectations, create a unique piece of work that will make the client want to use them again for future work. I think editors have to be very creative and see things in all different ways to make the product different from other work. I also feel that someone who manages their time effectively will succeed more within the industry as it is very competitive.
To get in contact with the band I message them via Facebook, as she knew them personally. The first message we sent them was
’hi Lizzie, we have been given a project within my college course and have to find a band to create a music video for. I remembered that you are in a band and that you were...
