You haven't told the girls yet what the plan is to beautify ourselves this summer. What are we eating? What are we limiting? Skin & body care products to try; workouts; places to attend; cocktails to order; the perfect bronzy glowy makeup routine for when we look like shit, and so much more. 😩 Come back to ussssss 💕
Hey Anon! I've been getting this request a lot so let's get into it. Summer diet, workouts, drinks, places to be, beauty, all of it. ✨
Diet
I'm a huge advocate for maintaining a clean diet and summer is no exception. Well, the exception is that there are a million reasons to go out and eat and drink and we are absolutely not saying no to any of them, so when we do have control over meals, we run a tight ship.
Monday through Thursday (save for the occasional midweek outting), I'm doing no processed or fried foods, no sugar except fruit and dark chocolate, high protein, high fiber, healthy fats only, no seed oils. Two to three meals a day substantial enough that I'm not snacking between them. No food after 7 PM. No alcohol at home, only socially. A gallon of water a day, nothing else, no juice, no soda. And supplements every single day: omega 3s, magnesium, vitamin D and K2, zinc, milk thistle, pre and probiotics. I know it sounds a bit extreme but it works for me. I'm only eating this way about 70% of the time because the other 30% I'm at a restaurant or a bar indulging with zero guilt. The balance is the whole point. It's what allows me to throw on a bikini at any given moment without panic.
And when eating out, a few small things that add up: ordering fresh seafood whenever it's on the menu (raw oysters and shrimp cocktail are my go-tos), getting salad instead of fries on the side, having a bite of someone else's dessert instead of ordering your own, ordering burgers protein-style, and whenever given a size option, just going small. The goal isn't restriction, it's making tiny choices that compound into a much better overall lifestyle and tighter waistline.
And on drinking, I'm not here to police anyone. What I will say is I drink as much as I can while still feeling and looking the way I want to. The moment it starts affecting my sleep or I'm too hungover to work out in the morning, I know I've overdone it. I've found a balance where a Friday or Saturday night out with a couple (okay, oftentimes more than a couple) drinks doesn't derail anything. As for what I'm drinking this summer: a really crisp Sauvignon Blanc or Sancerre, or a nice chilled light red when I want to get a nice buzz but not go too crazy. For the more traditional night out I love a Hugo or Aperol spritz, a spicy skinny margarita, or my signature dirty Belvedere martini, no vermouth, three blue cheese stuffed olives, on the drier side. I stay away from anything sugary or creamy because they're not worth the calories and the hangovers are miserable.
Workout
I covered this in my last post but the short version is: I'm always moving. I lift heavy three times a week, run twice, and get to a couple of classes on top of that. The more I can do outside the better. I will put on a cute set, a little light makeup, and commit to looking as hot as I can, sweating through a workout. Like with diet, just because it's summer doesn't mean we're allowed to throw in the towel. It's actually time to perfect the workout split, go up in weight and hit failure during every set, and sweat your ass off. Trust me, you will thank yourself when it's time to take beach pics. The benchmark I hold myself to: if I can make it to the club until 2 AM, I can absolutely make it to 11 AM pilates the next day. There is no negotiating with this.
Social Life
For me summer and the word "yes" are basically the same word. We are saying yes to everything this summer, full stop. Random guy in line at Starbucks thinks you're cute and invites you for drinks? Yes, you're down. Friend of a friend has a boat? Yes, you're getting on it. You see a flyer for a run club? Yes, you're at the next meet up. You drive past a pretty beach? Yes, you're pulling over, putting your feet in the water, and going to talk to someone. An old acquaintance from high school lives in the city you're passing through? Yes, you're texting them.
My best memories have come from saying yes to something I normally wouldn't have and ending up having the time of my life with strangers who became friends. You want a summer you actually remember. The rule I try to follow is having at least three meaningful social interactions per week, things that get you out of your usual orbit. You can go back into hibernation in October.
As for where to actually be, I'll get my pretentious pos card punched right now and say the Hamptons are unmatched and that's where I'll be spending my summer weekends. I love the East Coast beach town energy, the people watching, the complete shallowness of it all. But more practically, find your version of that. A cute beach town within a few hours where you can lay on the sand for a couple of hours, get ice cream, walk the docks, hit a few good bars and talk to tourists. It resets something in you. Even one or two weekends like that can carry you through the whole summer.
For the city, rooftop bars, any restaurant that has outdoor dining and happy hour spritzes on the menu, any event that gets you outside and around people. Concerts in the park, open air markets, a run club, a tennis lesson. I love searching TikTok for local events happening in my area each weekend. Basically if it's happening outdoors this summer, go.
Fashion
Summer dressing is an art and the art is making it look like you didn't try at all while actually having thought about it quite a bit. The formula I keep coming back to is simple: easy, comfortable pieces and then let the accessories do the heavy lifting.
My most-reached-for combinations right now: Denim shorts or a mini skirt with a fitted tank or a simple white tee. That's it. Throw on some flip flop heels (I love a barely-there strappy one), a little shoulder bag, some jewelry stacked up, and you look like you just stepped off a yacht. No effort required. I also believe the mini dress is the greatest invention in the history of summer dressing. One piece, zero thinking, instantly put together. I love a flowy cotton or linen one for the day and something slightly more fitted or silky for the evening.
The accessories really are everything and I cannot stress this enough. A really good pair of oversized sunglasses. Delicate gold necklaces layered together. Hoop earrings or something dangly (I love those big gold starfish earrings ugh so cute). A great summer bag, a woven tote for the day, something small and structured or a cute clutch for the evening. A few dainty bracelets layered with a small watch. The clothes can be $30 and the accessories will make the whole look suddenly feel expensive and intentional.
For where I'm shopping: Princess Polly for fun summer pieces that are incredibly wearable. Zara for trend-forward basics that are just fine for their price point. Reformation for when I want something a little more elevated and cool. French Connection for preppier, polished pieces that feel grown-up without being boring. I also love & Other Stories for beautiful accessories and understated pieces, ARITZIA for clean elevated basics, and Anthropologie when I want something a little more whimsical and feminine. For accessories specifically, Mejuri and Gorjana for everyday gold jewelry you never have to take off.
Beauty
Skin first. Good skin is the best thing you can wear in summer, so this is where most of my effort goes. SPF every single morning without exception, I use it as my moisturizer. Vitamin C serum in the morning for brightness. Tretinoin at night to stay ahead of what the sun is doing. Sleep with the humidifier on the highest setting. Consistency here matters more than anything else.
For makeup, summer is all about the glow. The goal is skin that looks lit from within, healthy and dewy and alive. A few products I love for this:
On the skin: A tinted SPF or skin tint instead of foundation is my religion. Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation or the Armani Luminous Silk if I want a little more coverage, but most days I'm reaching for something lighter like the ILIA Skin Tint or the Saie Slip Tint. Then I go in with the Rhode Pocket Blush in a peachy or rosy shade because a little goes an impossibly long way and it gives the most beautiful flush. The Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter either mixed in with my base or dusted on the high points of my face is my single most-used product in summer. It is the glow. Topped with a cream highlighter on the cheekbones and the inner corners of the eyes, something like the Fenty Beauty Body Lava or the Tower 28 Glowscreen, and your skin looks incredible.
For eyes I keep it simple: a little mascara, maybe a champagne or bronze shimmer on the lid if I'm going out, and my brows groomed and set. For lips, a glossy tinted balm during the day (I love Laneige or Summer Fridays for this) and a sheer red or a warm pink gloss in the evening. Setting spray to lock everything in and keep dewy without my look sliding off my face by noon.
Hair: I've made peace with the fact that summer is not the season for good hair (yes, I'm still wearing wigs and yes even the best hair will give you issues in humid heat) and I've learned to work with it. Salt sprays, braids, a good claw clip. If you're in the ocean or a pool, use a leave-in conditioner and protect your color if you have it. A really great pair of sunglasses does half the work of any hairstyle.
Nails: always. A clean set in a great summer color makes you feel put together at all times. I love a sheer pink or bright coral in the summer. Sometimes I'll do a flower or shell design.
Fragrance: wear it, layer it, find a signature summer combo. Something citrusy and fresh during the day, something warmer and more sensual at night. In the summer, I love alternating between Byredo's Gypsy Water and Bal D'Afrique during the day, and then transitioning to some of my heavier scents in the evening when the temperature has dropped, like MFK's Baccarat Rouge 540, Killian's Love Dont be Shy, or Creed's Queen of Silk.
Mindset
Here's the thing about summer: it has this way of either feeling completely magical or completely highlighting everything that feels off in your life. The difference, I've found, has very little to do with your circumstances and almost everything to do with what you decide to focus on. This particular summer I am choosing to treat as a gift. Not a consolation prize, not a distraction, a genuine gift. I have time and freedom that most people would kill for and I'm not going to spend it anxious about the future or stuck in what didn't work out. That's a choice I'm making every single day, sometimes multiple times a day.
A few things that have helped me stay in that headspace. First, I try to stay present and in my body. When I'm on a run or at the beach or at dinner with people I love, I try to actually be there instead of somewhere else in my head. It sounds obvious but it takes practice. Second, I've stopped treating this season like a waiting room for whatever comes next. This is not a pause. This is my actual life happening right now and it deserves my full attention. Third, I start every morning by thinking of something I'm looking forward to that day, even if it's small. A good coffee, a phone call with a friend, a new episode of something. It shifts the whole day.
The last thing I'll say is this: comparison will ruin your summer faster than anything else. Everyone's highlight reel is loud in the summer. Stay in your own lane, stay grateful for what's actually in front of you, and trust that everything is unfolding exactly the way it's supposed to.
I hope this helps!
