My heart is so fucking broken right now đ
Sam Neill passed today 7/13. FML.
So, I've got chapter 10 of Echoes of the Past scheduled, Chapter 11 will be queued up sometime tomorrow.
I've got maybe 3 ish chapters until the real shit goes down. 4 ish chapters until my dilemma.
Question is.... should I do a "cliffhanger" on the ending, then create a new fic that picks back up (like the famous season finale/season premiere cliffies), or keep going with the chapters on this one?
Cliffhanger, or keep going?
Cliffhanger, then new story
Keep going with the same title/story (adding chapters)
To get current with Echoes of the Past, here ya go! Previous Chapters: One / Two / Three / Four / Five / Six / Seven / Eight / Nine / (Ten will be posted 9am EST) 7/13 Spotify Playlist for The Rookie: Echoes of the Past - HERE

The heavy iron smell of rust and sweat hung thick in the air of the precinctâs basement gym. It was barely 0500, an hour before her shift would officially start, and the room was completely empty.
Ellie drove a wrapped left hook directly into the center of the heavy punching bag. She didn't pause. She threw a right cross, followed by a swift combination, her breathing ragged and heavy. Every impact sent a sharp, dull ache radiating straight across her ribs where the purple bruise from the vest sat, but she welcomed the pain. It was a physical distraction from the chaotic noise inside her head.
She caught the bag with both hands, pressing her forehead against the cool, rough canvas as her chest heaved. Her auburn hair was soaked, sticking to the nape of her neck, and her blue eyes were fixed blindly on the concrete floor.
The glowing screen of the terminal from last night was burned into her retinas. Victor was here for her.
Do I tell the team?

âHey, Iâll take the wheel for the first half of the shift if youâd like,â Lucy offered.
âYouâre the boss, go for it,â Aaron chuckled.
Lucy started the vehicle and pulled away from the station, heading out onto the busy streets of L.A.
â7-Adam-07, show us on patrol,â Thorsen radioed in.
The Rookie: Echoes of the Past
Synopsis: From oldest rookie to T.O., John Nolan takes on training the newest rookie, Officer Ellie Moore. In her first 6 months on the force, an unresolved case catches up to her, putting her survival to the ultimate test. A tale of mentorship, resilience, and facing one's demons head-on.
Character bio: Ellie Moore is 29 years old. Fresh out of the academy. Auburn/Ginger hair color, blue eyes. 5ft 3in, average weight, but weighs more than she would prefer (no lack of trying, but health issues hinder). Comes from a single mother and a younger brother. Doesnât normally delve into her past with others, unless its warranted. Ellie is compassionate and empathetic but can also be closed off at times. Secretly deals with minor to mild depression, depending on situation (would never tell anybody in fear of being kicked out of LAPD). She considers Lucy, Nyla and Angela good friends, but even more so Nolan. She views Nolan not only as a T.O. but sees him as a father figure as well at times. Ellie was diagnosed as a carrier of Fragile-X Syndrome and is afraid of having children in the future in fears of passing on the gene.
Itâs a sunny day in Los Angeles as Ellie heads to work. Windows down, music on, and volume up, the lyrics of âCanât Take Me Anywhereâ by Sam Tinnesz blare as she pulls into the station.
Parking in her usual spot, she rolls up her windows. Theyâre forecasting rain during her shift, and she'll be damned if she has to deal with wet seats again. In her side mirror, she notices Chen and Nolan talking at the station entrance and wonders if they saw her arrive. Getting out and locking her vehicle, she swings her bookbag straps over her arms and hurries to catch up with the others.
âAh, good morning, Ellie,â Nolan greets her with a warm smile. âHowâs my favorite rookie doing?â
âTired. Apparently the 3 cups of coffee Iâve had this morning haven't counteracted the effects of the Benadryl I wound up taking last night. So, Iâm hoping today goes like a breeze.â
âWell, I hate to be negative, but you probably just jinxed it,â Lucy grins.
so i hauve covid rn and i must say, American cold medicine is the absolute bees knees. You go to a UK pharmacy and they tenderly press like eight (8) paracetamol into the palm of your hand... God FORBID you're sick in France, i had to scour every pharmacy in Paris for something that wasn't HOMEOPATHIC PASTILLES. meanwhile last night i took the last of my stash of Nyquil that expired in 2019 and it was like getting hit by a fucking baseball bat (affectionate). press X to timeskip. LOVE me a cheeky little medically induced coma. you can really feel that it's a precursor to meth. i know that everything is fucking awful over there my friedns and my heart goes out to every one of you but if you need one small bright light of national pride in this time of strife please know that i envy you your cold medicine every day
i once took an american antihistamine pill just a basic one for seasonal allergies and i had to immediately lay down and while doing so i vividly hallucinated that i was a steerage passenger on the titanic resigned to my death as my cabin filled up rapidly with water. then i blacked out and when i woke up again my allergies were gone for the entire season.

Using the tip of a pen, Angela gently slid the crooked drawer out further. Tucked beneath a stack of folded bandanas was a neatly folded piece of paperâstark white and completely out of place in the messy room.
She pulled it out with tweezers and unfolded it on top of the dresser. It wasn't a note written in blood this time. It was a printed map of Los Angeles, with a heavy red circle drawn around a very specific, high-end commercial address in downtown LA: The Vanguard Vault & Safety Co.
Beneath the circled building, written in Victor's chaotic, jagged handwriting, were a single name and a timestamp:
MARCOS CALDERON â 1800 HRS.
âOkay, hereâs what we know,â Nyla started, pulling the evidence up onto the smartboard in front of the team and some of the other officers, her expression steely. "Marcos Calderon. He's the main shot-caller for the entire Sureño 13 operation in California. He doesn't just run drugs; he manages the cartel's local financials."
Angela checked her watch. 17:12. "We have less than an hour before Calderon is scheduled to be at that vault," Angela said, changing the slide on the board, ânow, we believe Calderon to be the last hit that Victor Martin has here. If Martin is successful, we believe that he may skip town altogether, and he is good at disappearing.â
Harper clicked another slide, âevidence that we gathered at the previous scene at Hector Ruizâs residence suggests that Victor is planning on neutralizing Calderon at The Vanguard Vault and Safety Company downtown at 1700 hours. I need everybody here to listen up closely. Victor Martin is armed and dangerous. He has already proven that with the last two homicides. Everybody assigned needs to have a partner and know how and when to call for backup,â she said, turning off the board, âLopez, Chen, Bradford, Nolan, Moore and I will be going in for when this goes down. I want a car at each possible exit. I want air support. If we do not capture Victor before he neutralizes Marcos, Sureños 13 will start an all-out war, and that is not what we want nor need.â
She looked around, âdoes everybody understand their assignments?â
Everyone affirmed with nods and âyes maâamsâ.
âHead to your waypoints and wait for our signal. Dismissed.â Angela commanded, watching everyone disperse.
Nolan and the team walked over.
âAlright, weâve got a van waiting near the entrance where Marcos will enter from the parking garage. Nolan, Moore, weâre going to have you set up there. Bradford, Lucy, you guys will be a floor below, unmarked cruiser. Harper and I will be in another van. Once we spot both targets, weâll need to act fast.â Angela explained the plan.
âAaron and I will also be in the van with Harper and Lopez running communications,â Sargeant Grey spoke up, âletâs go.â
The team all went their separate directions, each having their own missions while secretly praying it all went right.

âYou alright?â
She turned to find the source of the voice. John had got in the driverâs seat. âYeah, Iâm good. Just a long day.â
âUnderstandable. Letâs head back,â he said, his tone light.
Ellie nodded, picking up the mic, â7-Adam-15, show us returning back to precinct.â
â7-Adam-15, copy that.â
Nolan pulled the shop into the garage and turned the engine off. He and Ellie both sat in silence.
âYou know weâre going to get Martin.â
âI know.â
John looked over at his rookie, noticing her determined tone.
Ellie looked back, a resolved look on her face.
âI got him before in Ohio,â she paused, âand Iâll get him again here. Itâs not a matter of if, but when.â
âHeâll get sloppy eventually,â Nolan said, his tone encouraging, âthey almost always do.â
âVictor Martin doesnât get sloppy. Heâs too smart, too cunning for that.â
[id. A twitter post by @/Bennieeexyz Jury duty letter came addressed to my cat. Not a mistake. "Felix Martinez" - that's his full name according to his vet records. My last name. His first name. Somehow he's a registered voter now. Called the county clerk. Me: My cat got summoned for jury duty. Clerk: Is the name correct on the summons? Me: Yes, but he's a cat. Clerk: Is Felix Martinez a legal resident of this county? Me: He's a legal cat. Clerk: Sir, if the name matches our records, he needs to appear or file an exemption. Me: He can't file anything. He has paws. Clerk: You can file on his behalf. Me: Under what exemption? There's no box for "is a cat." Clerk: (pause) Check "unable to serve due to medical reasons." Me: What's the medical reason? Clerk: He's a cat. Me: That's not a medical condition. Clerk: It is if it prevents him from serving. Sent in the form. Got rejected two weeks later. "Insufficient documentation. Please provide medical professional's statement." Took the letter to my vet. Me: I need you to write that my cat can't do jury duty. Vet: Why is your cat summoned for jury duty? Me: Excellent question. No good answer. Vet: This is the weirdest request I've gotten. Me: Can you just write that he's medically unfit to serve? Vet: On what grounds? Me: He's a cat. Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings." Me: Perfect. Sent it in. Got another rejection. "Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court." My roommate thought this was hilarious. Roommate: Felix is going to jail. Me: This is serious. Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens. Decided that was actually the only option left. Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters. Checked in at the courthouse. Clerk: Name? Me: Felix Martinez. Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix? Me: Yes. Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat. Me: I've been saying that for six weeks. Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption? Me: I filed three. All rejected. Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief. Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation? Me: Twice. Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this. Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me. Supervisor: How did a cat get registered to vote? Me: You tell me. Supervisor: This is a data error. Me: Took you six weeks to figure that out. They dismissed Felix immediately. Apologized for the inconvenience. Supervisor: We'll remove him from the voter registry. Me: Appreciate it. Supervisor: (pause) Out of curiosity, how would he have voted? Me: Probably whatever party supports universal treats. Got a formal apology letter a week later and a voter registration card. For me this time. Apparently I wasn't registered, but my cat was. Roommate: Felix committed voter fraud. Me: Felix committed nothing. He's innocent. Roommate: That's what they all say. Felix is sleeping on the jury summons now. Fitting end to his legal career. end id]

"7-Adam-15, copy that. Show us en route."
Nolan grinned, tossing his trash into a nearby bin and jumping into the driver's seat. "Look at that. Sugar-free luck. Let's go catch a suspect."
Nyla Harper was sitting behind the steering wheel, listening to the call come through. The radio call had barely finished echoing through the speaker before Angela was already tapping the dashboard screen, pulling up the map.
"4th and Elm."
"That's three blocks from us. It's the silver sedan from the Sureno case."
"Ellie and Nolan are coming from the park. Weâll beat them there by thirty seconds.â Angela nodded and grabbed the mic. "Hey Nolan, Moore, Harper and I will meet you at the store, weâre nearby.â
âCopy that,â came Ellieâs reply.

âJust make the call, Ellie. Seriously, if you canât stay focused and objective, Iâll have no choice but to take you off the case. I wonât let mistakes put others in danger. I will not allow that.â His words were resolute.
âYes, sir.â
A couple days had passed since the case started, yet everything became too quiet. Ellie and Nolan were on patrol, cruising around.
Nolan glances over at Ellie from the driver's seat. Sheâs staring out the passenger window, her fingers tightly tapping against her duty belt. "You know," Nolan says gently, keeping his eyes on the road. "The silence in this car is usually filled with you asking me fifty questions about penal codes. You're quiet today."
Ellie doesn't look at him. "Just focused, sir. Keeping my eyes open for anything."
"Ellie." Nolan uses his soft, dad-voice. The one that means drop the 'sir'. "We've circled this area three times. The only thing out there is a guy trying to parallel park a Hummer. Talk to me. You haven't been the same since the case with Patrick and everything with Sureno."
Ellie swallows hard, her blue eyes narrowing slightly as she watches the pedestrians pass. "I'm fine. I just... I didn't appreciate Patrice threatening to sue me. Or bragging about her friends in high places. If that doesnât spell trouble for a rookie, then I donât know what does."
I'm so bummed about Paramount killing the Star Trek AOS movie franchise. I didn't have much hope anyway, but to have it extinguished completely is heart-breaking. It's such a waste of a great cast and existing fan-base, and it's so obviously the WRONG DECISION. I'd ask all AOS fans to rise up and slam Paramount so hard that they'd question it, but I don't have that kind of online clout. So I'm just sitting here feeling sad.
FUCK YOU, PARAMOUNT. đ€Ź
