THE LAST OF US 1x04 | 2x06
see you next year
I’m sure this is the first of many counter arguments I’ll be making but I’ve seen a few takes suggesting that Dina is being depicted as this hyper-competent, driven main character now. Let’s clear something up. Yes, Dina is smart. She’s tactical. She’s a planner. She’s great at thinking through scenarios and coming up with solid conflict avoidant strategies. But what she isn’t is someone who can execute under extreme, real time pressure.
We’ve seen her freeze three times now. Once at the turnstile when the infected rushed them and she was the deer in headlights. Again when they were swarmed by a multitude of stalkers. And a third time in the subway when the horde first started chasing them. Dina froze, and Ellie acted immediately. Ellie had to snap her out of it to get her moving. Dina struggles to improvise or make quick decisions when everything is falling apart.
That is where Ellie’s strengths come in. Ellie is a doer. She’s relentlessly capable, not because she’s methodical, but because she’s reckless and indifferent to her own safety. She doesn’t stop to calculate the risk of getting torn apart. She just acts, and she gets it done. Even when Jesse had to step in to help, and Dina got shot with an arrow, Ellie didn’t hesitate. She instantly came up with a plan in seconds that protected Dina and got them through it.
This is where they shine as partners. Where one lacks, the other makes up for it. And news flash, Dina is a main character.
But I want to make something clear. Showing Dina as the capable planner and Ellie as a little flighty when it comes to long-term strategies isn’t about diminishing either of them. It’s setting up the parallel for what is coming next — Ellie’s reckless and unhinged mission. You need to see these contrasts and how they balance each other to understand the weight of what happens later.
Joel going on a rant to ellie about how he fixed up the guitar... he's so special interest AuHD father figure core (this is coming from the daughter of a man with raging AuHD)
from “no, you’re cargo” to “because i love you” 🥲
for all the people out there that are upset about Ellie's change from "well you're a burden now aren't you" to "I'm gonna be a dad!", I think this will make the entire plot of the show wayyyy more emotional. Ellie being genuinely excited and happy for dina, ready to protect her at all costs, and not putting any sort of blame or holding any grudges against her because of her pregnancy is going to make the dellie breakup even WORSE.
I honestly think ellie and dina's connection has a lot more layers in the show than in the game so far (and as of right now). I think the way they're handling their relationship is so fucking perfect, and I know there's a handful of folks who disagree and want the show to be exactly like the game, but this is a really beautiful portrayal of love, and queer/sapphic love at that! we just don't have a lot of genuinely good sapphic media out there (that hasn't been cancelled...).
plus, CAN WE JUST LET THE LESBIANS BE HAPPY!!!! like everything is going wrong and will go even more wrong in future episodes, so just let them be happy for this tiny sliver of time my goodness!! 😭
this is what I've been saying!!! of course they change things from the game because the story is told through a different medium; the people on twitter were absolutely ripping into the "I'm gonna be a dad" part (especially the libs because OF COURSE) because apparently they've never heard of sarcasm or a joke in their life.
OP is right; they're setting things to be WAY more emotional in the show as they're fleshing out relationships & characters more. Ellie is beyond happy for Dina & being with her & raising this kid together with Jesse too, which is gonna make their ending all the more painful.
And I thought episode 2 made me a train wreck, geeez
"If i ever were to lose you, i'd surely lose myself."
they’re laughing like they didn’t just rip our hearts out.
