A harringrove au where Billy dies, but a few months later magically appears in Hawkins like nothing ever happened. Susan and Max still live in their old house, Neil is gone. Billy returns to his room like it's the most natural thing to do.
He's actually same old Billy, an asshole on occasion, just doesn't talk much, leaving all questions regarding his magical comeback answered in a pretty vague manner. The official version is "they patched me up and let me go," and he doesn't provide any more details cause "it's hush-hush and the government is involved, i signed an NDA blah blah blah .. you know how it is, Maxine, now get your nosy ass out of my room." Everything has calmed down in Hawkins, Owens is in Chicago and asked the party not to bother him unless there is a real code flaming red emergency.
Anyways Billy seems okay, finds a job, attends some evening courses and is looking into opportunities to maybe further his education, helps Susan to pay the bills and stuff, finds his old car at the scrapyard and starts the long process of bringing it back to life, in the meantime driving a god-knows-where-he-got-it black Mustang.
Only sometimes when the night falls and everyone is asleep, Billy quietly goes out of the house and into the darkness, and comes back at dawn, which usually remains unnoticed.
Until it doesn't anymore.
