4. completely original novel with original characters that just happen to look like and have the same names as the characters in this piece of popular media, but otherwise have completely different personalities and backstories.
Silver Fox
Hi. Iâve got terrible flu and decided to heal myself with some self-indulgent Rowaelin (mostly) fluff. If you end up hating this, Iâm totally blaming the meds lol who wouldâve thought one of its side effects was poor editing?
Iâd also like to thank @leiawritesstories for letting me use her professorâs Einstein joke. Absolutely priceless.
Word count: 6,2k
CW: swear words, drinking, mentions of cheating.
ËËËËËËËËËËËËËËË
Thatâs it. Iâm going to fuck his dad.
That was Aelinâs first thought when she saw the picture Lysandra sent of Chaol in a club with his hand under a girlâs skirt. With an attached message saying they left the party together.
At that point, Aelin was truly and thoroughly pissed. Their relationship wasnât very fulfilling and she didnât love him, but he had been a comfortable constant in her life for the past few months, specially since dating could be a handful when oneâs not in a serious relationship already, with all the games, bad experiences and walking on eggshells. She couldnât afford this now, getting through college was her main goal. But Chaol and her were supposed to be partners. Aelin could deal with a lot of things, but betrayal wasnât one of them.
It was Saturday, so she woke up late to find the picture, and stayed a lot of time frozen in place, just reeling. To then start pacing around the house. Her third reaction to the betrayal was to forward her cheating (ex) boyfriend the picture and text âDonât you dare trying to fix this.â when he started to apologize and request a conversation. Immediately after, she calmly laid in her bathtub, used her finest oils and lavender soap, put on a black lacy lingerie, black dress that was flirty but not too revealing, and red lipstick. She wasnât getting ready to fuck Chaolâs dad, no. She was getting ready to have her revenge.
Her mind was on fire as she started driving to Anielle. Was she sure about that? Almost. Mr. Westfall never really liked her, but he and her parents were all politicians, and at least she was respected for the weight of her last name and her familyâs legacy. Besides, even though they disagreed on everything, she had incredible assets. Aelin was confident enough to admit her looks made her hard to refuse. When added to the fact that Mr. Westfall didnât care enough about his son to have this kind of loyalty to him, her mission was almost too easy. She didnât care if Chaolâs dad was one of the most hateful people she ever met, getting revenge was enough to get her off. Her friends were always trying to warn her about him.
Aelin, his looks donât make up for his personality.
Aelin, heâs too boring for you.
Aelin, heâs not a boyfriend, heâs a charity case.
And what did she gain from dating Chaol? Exacâ
âWhat the fuck?â
When she looked up, there was a car in front of hers. One she just hit. Fuck. And it also wasnât looking good. Aelin was starting to panic when she saw Rowan Whitethorn getting out of the car she just hit. Great. Her exâs roommate. He was actually a sore spot on Chaolâs life, but she never figured it out besides not making it into the hockey team which Whitethorn was captain. Still, she wanted nothing to do with the people in Chaolâs life. Besides his dad, for one night. And the two friends they had in common. She was shutting the bastard out.
She left the car, looking intently at the damage until Rowanâs snap at her became impossible not to notice. âSeriously, Aelin? How fast were you going?â
âOh, please. Itâs not my fault you drive like an old lady.â Aelin couldnât help the snarky comment. Without a car, her avenge was ten times more difficult to achieve now.
She watched Rowan close his eyes and breathe in and out a few times, deeply. Then he ran a hand through his silvery-blonde hair and asked âAre you injured? Iâm fine so Iâm just going to call insurance if youâre good as well.â It would be a jerk move to be sassy now, so she just told him to go ahead and make the call, and they decided to wait on the sidewalk while someone came to pick up their cars. They really were lucky no one got hurt. Both of the cars looked like a raisin where they crashed.
She was also really lucky Rowan wasnât pressing charges. Actually, he didnât even seem overly pissed, just mildly so. She knew him very little, but as Rowan was definitely the quiet type, he was never rude to her, which made her try harder to understand Chaolâs spite toward him. She looked sideways and saw her crashmate look up, breathe deep and think hard on something. Probably trying not to be pissed at her, the person who wasnât looking where she was going and bumped into his car. Which now looked like the outside of a passion fruit. By now, she was actually thinking he was too nice.
At first, they didnât say a thing. Just stayed sat on the sidewalk, slowly breathing while waiting for someone from the insurance company to come. At some point, Rowan silently offered her his water bottle, which she gladly took and then cleaned the lipstick smudge left there. She didnât really know Rowan, but his steady presence was soothing. People watching on the street, with a breeze cooling her down, and breathing evenly for the first time since she found out she was being cheated on, Rowan probably had no idea how much this was calming her down. She was still mad at Chaol, but it was good to clear her head a little. Aelin wasnât even counting the time, she was just happy to see it pass by her. At this moment, she didnât feel like controlling anything.
A while later, Rowan broke the silence. âSo, where were you going in such a hurry?â Even though his question was snarky, he kept a gentle tone.
Aelin wasnât a very open person, and she didnât feel ready yet to talk to any of her friends about the downfall of her relationship, but something about Rowan made him seem approachable. Safe, even. So she told him the truth.
âI was driving to fuck Mr. Westfallâ.
Rowanâs cheeks flushed a little, but he kept his gaze intent on her. âYou call your own boyfriend by his last name?â
âNo, I mean his dad.â
At that, Rowan just gaped and stared at her, as if waiting for the clarification that it was a joke. Except that it wasnât. She just raised one eyebrow at him and waited for his brain to start working again.
âI met him only once and heâs one of the most unpleasant people I know. You canât be serious.â
âI never thought of him that way. In fact, I kind of always hated him, but Chaol and I broke up and Iâm so mad at him I just feel like sleeping with his dad out of spite.â
He looked up a little and asked quietly âCan I be honest with you?â
âAlways.â
He watched her a little and uttered with a small crooked smile âI always thought you were dating down by being with him.â Sounds like this was everyoneâs opinion on her relationship. âUgh, I know. My friends told me this at least a thousand times, but I didnât really listen. You and my cousin Aedion are teammates, right?â
He peered at her, unsure where she was going. âSure.â
âYou know his girlfriend?â
âYeah. Alyssa?â
For the first time that day, Aelin laughed. âLysandra, yes.â Then she remembered where the conversation was going and the mood sobered. âSo, she sent me last night a picture of him with another girl at a club, and told me they left together. I saw it this morning, forwarded to him and he didnât even deny he cheated, just tried to mend our relationship. The rest you already know.â
Rowan looked thoughtful while processing the information, then asked âand you think sleeping with someone you dislike with help you somehow? Iâd prefer to go for Dorian if I were in your shoes.â
âIâm really just doing it out of spite, and Mr. Westfall is the person Chaol has the strongest feelings, even though itâs hate. Besides, I had a quick fling with Dorian before dating Chaol and the three of us dealt well with it, it wouldnât make that big impact.â
Rowan still looked quizzically at her, but he seemed amused. âIâm still not sure your big impact makes up for sleeping with someone that repulsing, but Iâm sorry my slowness delayed your revenge. I would never purposefully come between a girl and her evil masterplans.â
Aelin just laughed, but didnât want to stop the conversation. So they started to tentatively ask each other about college, which developed to an exchanging of funny stories. The pink tones of the sunset were reflected on Rowanâs face as Aelin did an impression of her professor. âAnd he saidâ âshe took a moment as trying not to laughâ âEinstein. Yeah, sure, do the Einstein thing: grossly irresponsible research thatâs gonna kill us all,â and then she lost it, both of them laughing so much they had to take gulps of air after.
In fact, they were having such a good time they missed when the crew came to take their cars. Not wanting their little encounter to be over, they decided on going to eat a burger together nearby. Casually. As two new friends who liked spending time together. Aelin was definitely not thinking about the way Rowanâs body made his shirt stretch, or how his scent of pine and snow hit her when he held the door for her, and it reminded her of home. When they sat on the table, she was decided to toss these thoughts aside. She should go with the basics. And fast, since he was looking intently at her silent figure as if trying to figure her out.
âWhatâs your favorite color?â
He looked surprised, but quickly answered. âGreen.â
âFitting.â
âHow so?â
âYou smell like pine.â So much for her ability to shove dangerous thoughts aside.
âOh.â âhe still had that dumbfounded expression on his gorgeous gorgeous faceâ âItâs probably from my shampoo or something. I hadnât really noticed it before.â
Genuinely curious, Aelin couldnât seem to shut up. âIs your hair naturally that color? Itâs like you were born a Benjamin Button except that your hair stayed that way,â Rowan looked at a loss of words, so she added, âBut I mean it in a good way! Itâs quite cute, actually.â
Ignoring completely everything besides the last phrase, he just blushed and sheepishly asked âYou think Iâm cute?â Great. Aelin had her mouth opened as she tried to come up with an appropriate answer and they both were blushing now. With a much appreciated intervention, Rowanâs phone starting to vibrate endlessly and he rolled his eyes at whatever was happening on his screen.
âThat would be Fenrys. He refuses to call me, but keeps sending a thread of meaningless texts until he has my attention.â He seemed fondly exasperated at his friend, which just made Aelin cackle more.
âBut is it serious?â
Still texting this Fenrys guy, he replied âOf course not. He just want us to go clubbing with him.â
Her eyes widened. âUs?â
âYeah, I told him Iâm already busy and he told me to bring whoever Iâm with. In my defense, he would invite my mom if it meant he would get his way. And heâd totally own it because heâs that kind of social butterfly.â The way he talked about Fenrys kind of reminded Aelin about her relationship with Aedion, like he was fondly exasperated of his annoying little brother. That only piked her interest even more.
âOkay. Letâs go.â
Rowan looked at her as if trying to understand. âClubbing with Fenrys?â
âSure, why not? Iâm already dressed like I was going to, anyway.â She was laughing at her own joke while Rowanâs eyes roamed through her. Aelin didnât know exactly what it meant, but the heat in his eyes burned on her skin, and the feeling was exhilarating because it had been a while since she last felt desired. Her thing with Chaol had been mundane, driven by routine. Hot team captain that looked at her like this? Aelin could deal with that.
When the food came, Aelin realized she was starving. She didnât remember eating anything the whole day, probably forgetting to do so since finding out about being cheated on. And that burger was so good it should be illegal.
âThat good, huh?â Rowan mused.
Oh, fuck. She was blushing now. Had she been eating too greedily? Did she forget to clean something off her face? Aelin was about to apologize when she noticed Rowan wasnât reprimanding her, he actually looked amused. Wow. That was a new one. Still feeling shy and without knowing what to do, she just gave him a small smile. And received a full grin back.
âSo⊠Were you going to see your friends when I slammed into your car?â
âActually, I was going to my dadâs birthday. Itâs only tomorrow, but I like to talk to my parents a little before the very chaotic part of the family arrives.â
She couldnât help the giggle that came. âI donât have a big family, but Iâm very familiar with the âchaoticâ part. By the way, sorry for the crash. I hope you still make it tomorrow.â
âMy cousin already offered to give me a ride tomorrow, donât worry. Iâm not half as mad as I should be about that crash. In fact, Iâm not mad at all.â He tilted his head and seemed to be confused at himself, but both of them looked pleased. Good. She was liking this evening far too much for Rowan to have normal feelings about an accident that was totally her fault.
Talking to Rowan was easy. She didnât know how to describe it. Aelin had been on so many dates âwas that a date?â where she had to scramble her mind to find something to keep conversation going at least for another hour or so. Honestly, she didnât know if she could do this after such a long day, but keeping a conversation with Rowan wasnât an effort at all. They just jumped from one topic to another without even realizing it. It felt like they were in sync.
When the time came, they requested a car ride that dropped them in a place that definitely didnât look like a club. Not the ones she frequented, at least. It was a big house that didnât look like a frat, with a mechanical bull out front and a lot of drunk people. Rowan just said they should look for Fenrys and whoever was with him and held her hand. It was probably a meaningless thing, just trying not to lose each other in the crowd, but the moment his calloused hand gripped hers, Aelin could feel her whole body set alight just by that small act. She felt like an early teen getting noticed by her school crush. They only stopped walking when reached a table with two guys that looked a lot alike and⊠Elide and Lorcan? What the hell?
It turns out that Fenrys was a blonde guy with a brunette twin that left Aelin dying to ask if one of them painted their hair. They had been friends with Lorcan and Rowan forever, and even though Elide had only been seeing Lorcan for a few months, they acted like an old married couple so she already knew everyone in his life. After they were sat, Rowan carefully scooped closer to her, but didnât go further because Lorcan suddenly snapped at her.
âArenât you dating that Kale guy?â No wonder why he had looked more annoyed than usual since she appeared holding hands with Rowan.
âKale guy and I broke up.â
With an almost imperceptible smirk, he prompted âGood riddance.â
âAgreed.â
A bit after that, Elide asked Aelin to go get new drinks with her. When Lorcan and Rowan offered to do it, she shot daggers at both of them, leading to an apprehensive retreat. She meant business, them. After they had their Mojitos ready, Elide carefully stopped her from going back and whispered âAre you sure youâre okay? Lys told Aedion and I what happened, we were worried about you.â
âNo need to fuss, losing my mind over that breakup is very six hours ago Aelin. Iâm a new person now.â Aelin said that as a joke, but it was kind of true. She did feel different. Lighter. Anyway, she didnât know what Elide saw in her at that moment, but it was enough to leave it alone for now. âJust donât drink too much alcohol, you know the reactions it gives you.â
Aelin was genuinely confused now. âWhat reactions?â
âIt makes your legs spread.â Elide wiggled her eyebrows and it was enough to make both of them crack up. The laughter had subsided a little when they reached the table, but Connall still asked what they were laughing about.
âWeâ âa brief pause. She couldnât possibly tell the joke in front of Rowan nowâ âwere wondering what exactly is this party.â
âA graduation partyâ Fenrys proudly answered.
âCool. Whoâs graduating?â
âI donât know.â
The whole table seemed to stop a that. âWhat?â
âIâve been going out with someone. Casually. She invited me to come to her friendâs graduation party but I asked her if I could bring a friend, since Iâm only going to see her later.â A slow smirk. âSo here yâall are. Enjoy the party.â
The whole crew still looked ashen a few beats later, when Rowan asked âSo your version of âa friendâ is five people that girl doesnât know?â
Fenrys looked completely confident when he smiled and answered âNo need to fake outrage, youâre loving the free drinks.â
Honestly? She was. The drinks were flowing and Rowanâs friend group was really fun to be around. Except for Dorian and Nehemia, Chaolâs friends were always looking down on her for her life choices or political opinions. This change of scenario was refreshing.
Aelin couldnât remember how many drinks she had, but she did remember promising Fenrys sheâd ride the mechanical bull later. Apparently, âlaterâ was now. At first, she couldnât get up on the bull, so Rowan went to her rescue and propped his hands so she could step on them to get her right leg on the other side of it. But they probably had the same idea on getting her momentum, because when Aelin jumped to ride the bull, Rowan also pushed her feet up, which sent her airborne until she landed on the other side of the air mattress. Aelin could barely distinguish Rowanâs voice asking if she was okay from all the laughter in the room, and it turns out she was laughing too. In fact, she really hoped Elide had it on camera.
On their second try she managed to land properly on the bull, and she felt glorious until that thing started moving. Aelin had no idea how much time she managed to stay sat on the bull, the only thing she knew was that she managed a few seconds before lying on it and holding on its neck with both arms like her life depended on it. She was really grateful for the spandex shorts Elide had brought for the occasion and ended up lending her, because otherwise she would be flashing everyone now. It probably wasnât a long time after, but it certainly felt like a lifetime when the bull made a particularly sharp move and she finally fell. She would be grateful if her thigh didnât hit one of the bullâs horns on her way down, which was likely to bruise soon.
Aelin had only a few seconds to lie down and reevaluate all her life choices that led to this mechanical bull until Rowan appeared before her. âHey, you okay?â He looked concerned. Adorable. Little did he know she felt like she had died and came back by divine intervention. He checked her up and decided she was fine enough to go on, but the party started to fade away before she finished applying the ice pack that seemed to materialize on Rowanâs hand. The only thing he said to stop her complaining was âYouâre injured, itâs absolutely necessary.â She wasnât actually minding the hovering, but it was fun to tease him.
Elide, Lorcan and Fenrys already had plans that didnât include them, but Connall was meeting his boyfriend Vaughan at another party and invited them along. Before making a decision, she quietly whispered to Rowan, âI donât want to go to another party, but I really donât want tonight to be over.â
âI live close by, we could go to my place if you feel like it,â Rowan suggested tentatively, but then quickly started to rectify his intentions âand I donât mean anything by it, you know? We could just talk. Or not talk, really. Shit. I didnât mean it like that.â âhis cheeks reddened more each sentenceâ âWhat Iâm trying to say is that whatever you want to do, Iâll be happy to oblige.â Rowan look positively ill by the end of his babble. She wondered if sheâd ever see him that flustered without the booze.
The fact that Aelin would be going to her exâs house was just a fleeting afterthought when she accepted the invitation.
They were very close to the exit of the house when a girl wearing a mortarboard hat and a bodycon dress bumped into them. Her shoulder slammed against Aelinâs, but she could smell a heavy scent of beer in her. The hostess, then. She looked confused to see both of them, but perked up again when Aelin started cheering her on. âCongratulations! And thank you for having us, weâre heading out nowâ
The girl sent Rowan a glance that didnât hide she liked what she saw, then winked at Aelin before saying âYou go ride that bull, girl.â The only answer she received was Aelinâs bark of laughter and Rowanâs mortified face.
Aelin decided his place was close enough to go by foot, but Rowan only agreed to it before checking how bad her bruises were looking and lending her his jacket so she wouldnât catch a cold. She didnât have the heart to tell him his jacket wasnât going to stop a virus from entering her body.
Aelin looked up and sighed. âGod, I could use a snack now.â
âThereâs a 24-hour store nearby, wanna grab some food?â
âYeah, sure.â
âWhat are you craving?â
She weighted her options a little before answering firmly âCake.â
âPlease donât tell me you make those boxed cakes.â He looked horrified.
âWrong. I donât make any cakes. Iâm very good at eating them, though.â
Rowanâs eyes glistened when he replied âGood to know. Iâm very good at baking from scratch, but Iâm not good at eating them.â
Aelinâs jaw was on the floor. She couldnât have heard it right. âThat doesnât make any sense.â
He was laughing at her disbelief, which made her even more confused. How dare he. âI like to cook basically anything, but I find baking particularly relaxing when Iâm stressed out, so I do it and then give it to someone else. I donât like sweets.â
Oh my God. Was he even real? One person who only liked to bake, and another who only liked to eat. It was like they were meant to be. Aelin would never consider dating someone who didnât like sweets, but this scenario turned out to be the best one she could imagine.
Inside the store, they settled for popcorn and also some booze.
âWhat do you want to drink?â Rowan asked her while reading the labels.
âImpress me.â
âAre you okay with red wine?â
âRed wine?â She tilted her head. âAre you trying to seduce me, Whitethorn?â
He had the gall to look sheepishly at her. âOnly if you want me to.â
That made Aelinâs grin become predatory. âSo you should know Iâm a Pinot Noir kind of girl.â They only stared at each other for a while, the air heavy with the meaning of the words left unsaid. Then Rowan cleared his throat and chose some bottles.
When they finally got to the place he shared with Chaol and other two students, everything was dark and deadly quiet. Once in the kitchen, Aelin quickly settled into the role of sous chef. Except that this sous chef only helped when separating the ingredients and by giving moral support, but neither of them were calling her out on this. After baking, they happily sat on the kitchen floor with one bowl of popcorn and two glasses of wine while waiting for the chocolate cake to be ready âthe one Rowan made from scratch, specially for her. She couldnât get over this partâ.
âSo, donât get me wrong, but your parents are those two big names in Terrasenâs politics. What made you go to med school?â People meddling in her career was a bit of a sour spot in her life, but he didnât sound judgy, only curious. That was probably why she managed to give him a real answer, without being snarky.
âHonestly? I donât know. The idea of healing people excited me, so I told my parents I wanted to be a doctor when I was eight years old. That never changed, and they were surprisingly cool about it. Iâve never felt like a rebel because I always had a choice.â Rowan looked proudly at her, so she prompted. âYou?â
âIâve never felt a huge calling for any profession. When the time came, I chose International Relations because it felt right. I wanted to be a bird when I was a kid.â
Aelin cackled hard at that. âYes! How is this so fitting? You hover like an old Buzzard.â
He looked confused, until he was laughing along with her. If Aelin was sober, sheâd worry about enjoying Rowanâs company way too much. She settled with the thought that it was just refreshing to spend time with someone who actually laughed at her jokes, that was all. When she came back to the moment, he was looking thoughtfully at her and running his thumb along her hand. She used her free hand to caress his cheek and he broke the silence a beat later.
âAre you still going after your exâs dad?â Seriously? That was what he was thinking about?
Aelinâs hand that was resting on Rowanâs cheeks traveled to his silvery-blonde hair while she answered âI could really go for a silver fox now.â
His eyes widened slightly. âMr. Westfallâs hair is not silver.â
âI know.â She was just glad he didnât notice how terrible that pick up line was. Rowan just blinked as his whole face flushed. His mind was probably scrambling to something to say or do when they were interrupted.
âWhat. The. Fuck?â Said a very familiar voice.
She immediately noticed a smell of vodka and womenâs perfume. When they looked up, Chaol was fuming on the kitchen entrance.
Rowan decided to start things peacefully. âHey. I didnât know youâd be here, you never stay in on the weekends.â
This was news to Aelin. âWhat does he mean you never stay home on the weekends?â Was she really that stupid?
âGet the fuck out of my relationship, Whitethornââ
âUm, we broke upâ Apparently, she still had to remind Chaol of this slight detail.
But he detected the smell of cake and continued. âAre you fucking baking for her? This is trying too hard to get in a girlâs pants, even for you.â Right now, Aelinâs only concern was on the oven. Was the cake ready? It smelled ready. She needed Chaol out of the kitchen soon. She was going to summon Rowan when she glanced at him and noticed he looked positively murderous.
âSeriously? You and the guys are the ones who eat my stuff the most. In fact, Iâm practically the only one who cooks in this house. I saw you eat half a cake by yourself the other month, but you only tolerate me when itâs handy for you.â
âCan you blame me for not tolerating you when youâre foreplaying my girlfriend with chocolate cake? How long have you been planning this?â Aelin really couldnât tell if Chaol was more pissed about her being with Rowan, or about her being fed by Rowan. But she decided to sort that out later, not wanting the cake to burn. She helped Rowan do it, it felt like it was her baby. Their baby. Whoa, too soon. She had too much to drink tonight. But then something clicked.
âAre you telling me you had access to half a cake and didnât care to share with me, Chaol?â
He looked at her like she was a petulant child. âAelin, we should go to my room and talk about this. I told you we can work things out. Going after Whitethorn just to spite me was a low blow, but I get why youâre angry. I see you, baby. It was just one mistake and honestly? Itâd help a lot if your friends just stayed out of our relationship andââ
She had completely tuned him out by that point. Aelin was just nodding her head up and down, trying to distract him from Rowan and the cake. And Chaol seemed to believe her magnificent drunk acting. But then his red angry face and continuous babble âthat actually meant something, but she didnât feel like acknowledging itâ reminded her of a tomato. Even better, of one of those Annoying Orange videos she used to watch a decade ago. She was trying not to laugh, but her shoulders were already shaking, and when Annoying Chaol stopped his speech and really looked at her, she couldnât keep it together and started cracking up. Rowan sent her a confused look at first, but then started laughing too when he saw her amused expression.
Defeated, but too proud to assume so, Chaol just rolled his eyes and said âCome talk when you stop acting like a child.â before slamming the door and leaving the house. Both Rowan and Aelin managed to recompose themselves a bit before looking at the spot her ex was in and cackling again.
As she imagined, the cake was delicious. She was trying to eat as much as she could, but stopped when Rowan said she could take the whole thing home. He watched her in awe as she stood up, put both of her hands on the table and proudly announced âIâm going to take my exâs advice and stop acting like a child. Do you want to see my last childish act, Buzzard?â Reluctantly pleased, he agreed and followed her up the stairs with two closed wine bottles.
Aelin couldnât decide if it was a waste of Pinot Noir or not when she entered Chaolâs bedroom and painted his drawer with red wine. Shirts? Check. Underwear? Check. Very white socks? Check, check, check. Was tie dye still trending? She certainly hoped so.
She found Rowan propped against the doorframe, looking completely astonished. When she arched an eyebrow, waiting for a reproach, he just indulged her more. âYou know, his bedsheets are looking awfully clean.â
âRemarkable observation, Buzzard.â Then she threw a bit more than half a bottle all over his bed, hoping it would stain not only the sheets. Two bottles of red wine spent on petty revenge, completely worth it. She hoped his other woman (or was it women?) would like the new theme. He could say he entered his new era. Finishing her abstract artwork, she schooled her face into a surprised look and said âOh no! Now thereâs only three beds! What are we going to do?â
âDo you think your ex will mind being the big spoon?â She cackled. Hard. It was difficult to picture tall, broody and brawny Rowan Whitethorn being the little spoon. He just put an offended hand on his chest and looked at Aelin in mock outrage. âSexist much, Ace?â âHer new nickname falling like honey from his lipsâ, âActually, Iâm not even familiar with the wonders of little spooning. Girls always assume Iâm going to be the big one.â Now, both of them were laughing, and somewhere between that and catching their breaths, Aelin held his hand and led him to his own room. He looked even more confused when she told him to lie down on his side. Rowan didnât seem to catch up on her plans, but apparently he trusted her enough to oblige.
Their drunken mirth subsided at the same rate the tension grew. By the time Aelin laid behind Rowan, the room was deadly quiet. But it wasnât necessarily a bad thing, she felt⊠comfortable. It felt good to wrap one arm below Rowanâs neck and the other above his waist. At this point, she was certain they felt like two pieces falling into place. Aelin started using one of her arms to stroke his hair.
âAre you liking little spooning so far?â
The only answer she received was a grunt. âYou are no better than a house cat.â was the only thing she said while continuing her work. She just wasnât certain about her next step. He probably felt like this too, by the way his body shivered when she accidentally tucked her nose behind his neck and breathed right on his spine. So when he started lazily stroking her thigh from behind, the only warning she gave him was saying âTell me if you want to stop,â before kissing down his neck.
His breathing turned heavier and she loved inhaling deeply his pine scent while kissing such a soft patch of skin. Rowan turned around, held himself up with one hand and brushed Aelinâs skin before dipping down and kissing her.
It was brief and tentative, but enough to feel the softness of his lips. For a beat they only looked at each other. She could see the gentle breeze coming from the window mess with a few wild strands of Rowanâs hair. When she focused back on his eyes, they were intent on her, its green shade even darker under the moonlight. He silently dipped his head and kissed her for real this time. And heaven didnât get close to how she felt.
She could swear he was the oxygen that set her body on fire. She dragged her nails through the back of his scalp, making him shudder again and kiss her harder. Since Aelin had already learned his weak spots, it was only fair he learned hers. She moved them until she was straddling his thighs, grabbed a fistful of his hair and made him look into her eyes. Rowan looked completely captivated. Good enough to lead his mouth to her neck. By the time he was lavishing her collarbone, Aelin had started to move her hips against his, deepening the frenzy they were in. When she took his shirt off, she⊠stopped.
Sensing her hesitation, Rowan gazed at her and his eyes looked understanding. They were both drunk. This wasnât a ânow or neverâ kind of situation, Aelin was almost certain she would still see a lot of Rowan. Soon. Besides, the little time she had before sunrise wasnât enough to do all the things she wanted to do to him. Whatever was brewing between them, she had a feeling both of them thought it was going to be great. So she would take her time.
He kissed her forehead. The tip of her nose. Both of her cheekbones. Her chin. And then a peck on her lips. Another few ones. Until he started kissing her again for real, but this time it wasnât essentially steamy. They were more on the soft side, and Aelin didnât know which one she preferred. She was feeling hot as well before, but the main feeling she got now was affection. At that moment she was hit by the realization that she had never felt that much cherished by a lover before, and it felt incredible. Her connection with Rowan felt incredible. Even though they hadnât paid attention to each other until twelve-ish hours ago.
There was some noise from the little movement on the streets, but nothing enough to burst the little bubble they created for themselves. They kissed and talked and laughed until the moonlight that gleamed on them was slowly replaced by the sunlight that was now painting their skins.
âWill you get mad if I tell you Iâm actually glad I smashed your car?â Aelin was smiling as if she didnât know she could get a law suit from this crash.
âNo. In fact, Iâd be offended if you were sorry at this point.â A brief kiss. âSo, I donât know when Iâm getting back from my parentsâs because Iâm depending on Enda, but maybe I can see you tomorrow?â It was cute how hopeful he sounded.
âWerenât you supposed to wait three days to text?â
His eyebrows rose dangerously close to his hairline. âYou want me to wait three full days? That sounds like a terrible waste of time.â
She couldnât help but laugh at his reaction. âJust kidding. Tomorrow is actually a slow day for me, text me when youâre free so we can figure something out.â She appeased him while saving her number on his phone. To her credit, he looked truly pleased now.
âGood. May I also send you a date suggestion? If itâs completely shit, you can make me wait three days.â
She kissed him for the last time that day.
âTell me tomorrow.â

Summary: âShit. He was in such deep shit. Such deep unending shit. How had he fallen for his enemies daughter?â
Rich, tennis loving, dog adoring, Harry Potter obsessed, party girl Aelin Galathynius is the city of Orynthâs sweetheart. If only she knew that the perfect life her parents had painted for her was a lie.
Rowan Whitethorn has just moved to Orynth and is out for blood. Him and his cadre are out for blood. He just needed the right plan to get to his enemy, and he knew the perfect plan. Through his daughter. All he had to do now is manipulate her. Hopefully he doesnât fall in love.
Chapter One//Masterlist
Aelin could not understand for the life of her people's hatred for sweets. She loved donuts, waffles, pancakes, cake, candies and chocolates⊠Yet people could settle for only granola bars in the morning.
Aelin needed the energy in the mornings (along with some good coffee). Thatâs why she needed to hurry the fuck up, she was starving.
Aelin brushed her hair out of her face with a headband. She had finally graduated from Highschool and was ready for a summer of fun and a little bit of stress.
âAelin, are you naked?â her cousin's voice rang from outside her bedroom door. âBecause if you're not I'm coming in!â
Aelin clicked her tongue. âIâm not nude Aedion.â
That was all the answer he needed before he opened the door and peeked his head through. People usually assumed that they were both siblings because of how identical they looked with golden hair and matching turquoise eyes ringed with gold.
âAre you done yet? Kale is downstairs,â Aedion said with an eye roll.
Aelin folded her arms over her chest. âHis name isnât Kale, itâs Chaol.â
âThereâs no difference, they sound the exact same.â
âThere is a difference, you said Kale, itâs Chaol.â
âWould you rather I call him, veggie boy?â Aedion asked with a quirked brow.
âWould you rather I punch you in the stomach?â
âYou're no fun,â Aedion sighed, fully opening the door and leaning on the doorframe. âYour dad wants you downstairs now, I donât think the poor guy can handle any more of your boyfriend before he throws something at his head.â
âI donât know why he hates him so much,â Aelin said. âHeâs the one who pushed me toward Chaol during that charity ball.â Really, it was more of her motherâs ideas but still.
âThatâs before he saw the guy practically eating your face.â Aelin rolled her eyes.
âItâs called kissing and itâs normal.â
âNot when you see your daughterâs boyfriend tongue down her throat.â
Aelin didnât answer him as she gracefully slid out of her bedroom, flipping Aedion off as she passed him.
Like Aedion had said her father looked ready to kill Chaol with his bare hands. It was almost laughable as she watched her conservative boyfriend sweat about her father who she thought was the sweetest man alive, well maybe if you were related to him or somehow close with the man.
âHello father, Chaol,â she said, sweeping into the room and giving her father a kiss on the cheek. Her nose scrunched when her lips made contact with his bearded face. She took a seat on a barstool beside Chaol and gave her boyfriend a sweeping kiss. Her nose scrunch only became worse as she took a wisp of Chaolâs far too strong cologne. She swore one day the stench would burn her nose off.
âMorning fireheart,â her father greeted with a smile. He handed her a plate of fresh crepes, covered in Nutella and powdered sugar. The smell alone made her mouth water. She looked over at her still sweating boyfriend.
âDo you want some Chaol?â she questioned. Her father snorted from the back of his glass and she could hear Aedionâs snort from upstairs. They both knew Aelin had absolutely no desire to share her food, she growled at anyone who even attempted to take her food.
It was Chaolâs turn to snort, but for a completely different reason. âToo sweet for me, especially in the morning. Besides Aelin, you should watch what you eat, everything you eat is fattening.â She watched as Chaol's gaze lingered on her body.
Aelin's body tensed. Maybe he had meant the âsuggestionâ as helpful and it all came out wrong. She had dealt with enough criticism about her body either being too thin or not thin enough. âChaol I think you can go ahead of me, I still have some more stuff to do before we can head to Dorianâs.â
Chaol didnât seem inclined to disagree with her, he already wasnât a patient person and by the looks of it, heâd do anything then have to endure her fatherâs glare that had turned up from 50 to 100 degrees.
âBye babe, Iâll see you later,â he said standing up, kissing her cheek. She hummed as she heard him lead himself out.
âWhat an ass,â her father said through gritted teeth. âYou canât let him speak to you that way.â Aelin didnât mind him as she cut up her crepes and dug in.
âI donât really care about his comments, dad.â
âHe shouldnât be making such comments in the first place.â
âI say dump his ass,â Aedion said, emerging from the marble staircase, into the kitchen. He looked inclined to grab a piece of her crepes, she hissed at him in warning. âYou were going to give one to veggie boy!â
âThatâs because I was being polite.â
âWhen are you ever polite?â
âYa know what Aedion-â
âOkay, the both of you calm down,â her father said, his voice stern, but slightly amused. Aelin stuck her tongue out at her cousin, while Aedion simply rolled his eyes. âNow, whatâs all this talk about going to Dorianâs? Will any parents be present at what Iâm assuming is more of a party than a basic hang-out?
Aelin and Aedion both groaned in unison. âDad, Aedion and I are adults now, well, me more than Aedion, but still. Weâre both adults who donât need adult supervision or overbearance.â
âI agree with everything the Princess said, besides her being more âadultâ than me. The Princess canât even kill a spider by herself.â
âThatâs because I suffer from extreme arachnophobia. What kind of demon creature has six legs!â
Rhoe surveyed the two before shaking his head. âJust be safe and use your brains.â
âWhen donât we?â Aelin asked, taking a bite of her crepe.

Based on the prompt:
"I always use the self checkout at my library because Iâm afraid the cute librarian will judge me for my book choices, but of course just when Iâm trying to borrow 5 (obviously smutty) romance novels, the machine breaks and you (the cute librarian I was hoping wouldnât see my book choices (itâs for research, I swear!) have to scan every book by hand and become increasingly more intrigued/ scandalized with each title (because you read them too, so now you offer to help me with my âresearchâ and it sounds like youâre coming on to me, which is totally cool since I definitely have a crush on you, but I actually intended to do research for my advanced lit class where I have to write a paper on romance novels and the reasons theyâre mainly written by and targeted at women."
Whenever one wanted to find Rowan Whitethorn, the library was a good place to start. He spent most of his time there, which could be boiled down to two simple reasons: First, it was his favorite place to study and hang out, since his roommate, Fenrys, always had company and they were usually very loud.
The second reason was one he would never admit out loud, but it was true nonetheless: He had a crush on the cute blonde librarian that worked the afternoon shifts. His friends were unfortunately well aware of this fact, since he had always been terrible at hiding who he liked. Since they despised studying however, they were not often in the library with him, so they very seldom had the chance to tease him when she was close.
He had been stunned the first time he'd walked into the library and seen her at the information desk. Her waist-length hair was shining golden in the afternoon sunlight that came in through the windows and, as if sensing his gaze, she had looked up and they had locked gazes. Her eyes were the brightest turquoise he'd ever seen and he'd been so overwhelmed by her beauty he almost walked into a shelf on the way to his usual place to study. Of course, on that day his roommate had decided to accompany him, and Fenrys had promptly broken out in raucous laughter at Rowan's reaction. This had promptly earned them a reprimanding look from the beautiful woman.
Since that first meeting, they had started with the occasional small talk and Rowan had learned that her name was Aelin and that she was originally from Terrasen, only moving to Doranelle for university, and to be closer to her cousin. After a while, she had come to sit next to him while working on her own projects whenever she was in the library and didn't have to work or even just when it wasn't busy, so she could get away with not being at the information desk. They'd even helped each other with research sometimes, if their topics overlapped. Which was not as often as Rowan would have liked. But despite all of this, Rowan had never gathered enough courage to ask Aelin out.
Today, Rowan sat at his usual table near the big floor-to-ceiling windows that made out the entire left wall of the library. He loved this spot because the other students usually preferred the more secluded and comfortable upstairs area. But Rowan rather preferred the view out the window. Of course he also liked how he could see the information desk from here, where Aelin spent most of her time. And Aelin liked that she could still see if someone needed her help when she decided to sit next to Rowan on slow days.
Today was a rather slow day- there were only a handful of students visible in the downstairs area, all of them engrossed in a book, their laptop, or both- but Rowan could see that Aelin had a big pile of returned books she needed to put back on their shelves, so he knew she wouldn't have time to sit down with him. Which was just as well really, since he wasnât going to sit down anyway. No, today, he was here for research material for his advanced lit class. He had an essay due in a few weeks, but since he needed to read, or at least skim, multiple full length novels, he wanted to start as early as possible. It had taken him some time to narrow down his topic and his question and now that he knew what he wanted to write about, he had to find his research material. Which consisted of romance novels.
Usually, he would ask Aelin for help with finding a book, just to get an extra chance to talk to her, but he felt a bit embarrassed at the thought of asking Aelin to help him find romance novels, especially since he needed so many.
So, he left his bag at his table and started his hunt for a wide variety of romance novels. After about thirty minutes of searching, he decided on five different novels he hoped would give him a broader understanding of the genre. His choices included contemporary romance, sports romance, paranormal romance, fantasy romance, historical romance and something called a reverse harem romance. Whatever that was. Well, he supposed he would find out soon enough.
Most of the covers showed at least one partially undressed man that was ripped. Even Rowan, who was an athlete on scholarship here at DU and spent a fair amount of his time at the gym, did not look like that. But he was sure that wasn't the only unrealistic expectation these books were instilling in the minds of women everywhere. That was something else he would find out soon enough.
Satisfied with his stack, he made his way to the self-checkout machine downstairs. If asking Aelin where he could find romance novels made him nervous, letting her check them out for him was definitely off the table.
Rowan had used this machine multiple times since heâd started at DU, so he didn't expect anything to go wrong. But of course you never expect something to go wrong when performing a perfectly mundane task.
So, when he started scanning his books and a bright red window popped open on the screen saying âError 5364: Machine needs recalibration. Please use the regular checkout desk,â he just stared at the screen for a minute or two, not comprehending what the machine was telling him. But then it clicked. He would have to check out his books manually. Which meant that Aelin had to check out his books. Which meant she would see him checking out five romance novels, and nothing else. On a Friday afternoon.
The first time he ever saw Aelin suddenly popped into his head, and he remembered how embarrassed he'd been over his first impression. This situation definitely had the potential to trump the embarrassment of that first meeting.
But there was no way around it. He needed these books to start on his assignment. And besides, it was just books. She might judge him for his reading choices, might even use it as a fun story to tell her friends, âRemember that one time I worked at the library and this guy checked out five romance novels on a Friday afternoon. Talk about being single.â
And really, what was the worst thing that could happen? People knowing he read romance novels? That shouldn't be embarrassing at all. So, trying to push his worries and insecurities down, he made his way over to the checkout desk, where Aelin was currently typing into the computer.
âHello, Aelin.â Aelin looked up sharply when he said her name. Apparently, sheâd been so lost in her work, she hadnât heard him approach. But as soon as her eyes found his face, her gaze softened a bit and she gave him a warm smile.
âRowan, hey. What can I do for you?â she asked, coming out from behind her computer and leaning against the desk opposite of him.
This close, he could almost smell her shampoo. He had to stop himself from leaning closer to get a better whiff.
âOh, I, uh, wanted to check out some books,â he said, feeling his ears warm a bit.
Calm down, he told himself. No need to get flustered before anything has actually happened. âAnd, well,â he added, âthe self-checkout machine is broken or something. Someone should probably take a look.â
He raised his arm, the one not holding the books, and scratched the back of his neck, staring in the direction of the offending machine. Her eyes followed his gaze and her smile fell a bit. Great. Now heâd managed to make her think he didnât want to talk to her.
âOh, sure,â her gaze returned back to his face. âI'll have a look at that and get it fixed.â
âGood.â
âRight⊠So, where's those books you wanted to check out today? Are they for a new research project?â
He couldnât help but admire the fact that she was still so nice to him, even though he was behaving rather strangely.
âOh right, they're right here,â he said and held up the books under his arm.
She typed on the computer again, presumably to call up his account, and got her scanner ready, but when she looked up at him again, Rowan was still holding the books in a rather strong grip.
âWell, you'll have to actually give them to me,â she laughed, though concern began to crinkle her eyes. He couldnât blame her. He was half-concerned about his behavior himself.
âYes, I'm aware,â he answered, reluctantly laying the books down on the table before her.
Aelin pulled the stack of books toward her, a questioning look in her eyes. Rowan could see the moment she realized which books he was checking out today, because a fiendish glint alighted her eyes and her smile was barely contained.
"Rowan Whitethorn,â she teased. âThose are some excellent choices. Might I recommend a glass of wine and some chocolates to get the full experience?â
Heat rushed into his cheeks and the back of his neck. He cleared his throat. "Haha, thanks for the tip," he said, finding it suddenly hard to look into her eyes.
"Look at you, blushing and mumbling. I never thought Iâd get to see the stoic Rowan Whitethorn this way," Aelin laughed. "Though there's really nothing to be embarrassed about. It's just books."
Her reassurance didn't make the situation better though. "I know it's just books," he said, a bit indignant. "And I'm not embarrassed about reading them-" he cut himself off before admitting he was just embarrassed because of what she might think of him. "They're for research," he continued instead.
That seemed to get her attention because her amusement vanished and suddenly she had another look on her face that Rowan couldn't quite interpret. Aelin had now finished scanning his books and pushed the stack back towards him, leaning forward in the process. "Well Rowan," she almost purred - really, there was no other word for it- "if you ever need assistance with your research, you know where to find me." At this she leaned back and winked at him.
Rowan's brain short-circuited. Was Aelin Ashryver Galathynius actually flirting with him? Or was this just an honest offer of help with research, like they'd done a hundred times before? "You want to help me with my research?" he asked, not sure what else to say.
"Well, I rather think that you could profit off another female perspective, don't you? After all, preferences tend to vary with things like theseâŠ" She let her sentence trail off, looking expectantly at him.
Unfortunately for both of them, Rowan wasn't sure what she was expecting from him. They stared at each other in silence for one beat; two; until Aelin suddenly looked away and mumbled "Or maybe not." She sounded deflated and was now sporting the beginnings of a blush herself. "Have a nice weekend; Rowan. And sorry if I made things weird," she added, almost shy now.
So he hadn't been imagining things. Aelin was actually coming on to him. And he hadn't said anything, just stared blankly at her, so now she thought he wasn't interested. No, he wouldn't let this chance pass by. "Wait," he blurted, as she started to turn away and leave the information desk.
She turned back toward him, although her eyes didn't meet his and yes, there was definitely a slight blush on her cheeks.
"Do you want to go out with me?"
Now she was looking into his eyes again, surprise shining there.
"I mean, I'm pretty sure you just came on to me. Which is totally fine, because I definitely have a crush on you," he hastened to add as her blush deepened, "It's just that these books are actually for research. For my English lit class." He pointed at his stack to make sure she knew which books he was talking about, as if there were any other possible options in this situation. "So, I sincerely hope you were trying to ask me out and not just trying to be a helpful friend. But you might understand how I got confused for a second there."
She looked at him for another silent moment and then started to chuckle. "I have to admit, I don't even know where to start with that statement. The fact that your professor has you reading smutty romance novels for class, that you thought I was actually trying to offer you help with academic research, that you asked me out, or that you just admitted you have a crush on me."
He grimaced slightly. "Maybe address the me asking you out part first? You know, to put me out of my misery."
At this she laughed again. "Okay. Yes, Rowan, I would love to go out with you. As you deduced, that has actually been my intention the whole time."
"Great," he breathed. "Amazing. How about coffee? Tomorrow, at three? I'll pick you up after your shift."
"You know my shifts by heart?" She laughed. "I'm honored. But yes, coffee sounds lovely."
"Amazing," he repeated. "Hey, how about this: I'll take my books and leave before I make an even bigger fool of myself, but I promise to answer your other questions tomorrow over coffee?"
"Ah, you like to keep women waiting for their satisfaction, I see," Aelin teased. "Fine, I'll play your game, Rowan Whitethorn. Pick me up tomorrow and tell me all about your smutty project. Maybe I'll tell you about my crush on you in return." With that, she winked again and then left the information desk to disappear somewhere in the stacks, leaving Rowan to stare after her.
He couldn't keep the stupidly big grin off his face now that she couldn't see him anymore.

The Fighter
Aelin Galathynius was independent. She was confident. She was her own person. And sheâd be damned if anyone tried to tell her otherwise.
Sheâd long since determined that if she were to get anywhere in the world, it would be by her hands alone. All through High School she spent hours outside at the local park basketball court. In college she made it into a Division II school, much to her chagrin. But she tried to keep herself going. By the time she graduated at twenty-two she was picked up by a foreign league to play as a starting point guard.
So yes, Aelin was more than capable of taking care of herself.
If only everyone else would believe it.
