Life From Zero: An InZOI Rags to Riches Challenge
This challenge was created by EllieVonBraedan. The Rags to Riches genre predates this work; Life From Zero is a custom framework designed specifically for InZOI.
Life From Zero is a story-driven InZOI Rags to Riches challenge focused on survival, dignity, and rebuilding a life from nothing. Starting unhoused with zero money, players must earn stability, choose a wealth path, and face real consequences for shortcuts, crime, and relationships. Designed to encourage organic storytelling, meaningful progression, and unique playthroughs rather than speed-running wealth.
1. What Is This Challenge?
This is a Rags to Riches–style life challenge designed specifically for InZOI.
This challenge is not about speedrunning money or exploiting systems. It is about building a life from nothing with consequences, dignity, and meaningful choices.
Core philosophy:
- Survival before comfort
- Dignity before romance
- Stability before commitment
- Choice before optimization
There are multiple valid paths to wealth, no single correct strategy, and room for unique storytelling. I also am streaming this live currently, Starting from January 2026 - Present
If you plan on joining us I would love it if you used #lifefromzero so I can see y'all's story! I am so curious what you all come up with! I will be posting my story as well.
Living Ruleset
This challenge is a living ruleset. As new systems, edge cases, or exploits are discovered, rules may be clarified, adjusted, or added to preserve fairness and protect the spirit of the challenge.
New rules are not retroactive and apply only from the moment they are introduced.
2. Getting Set Up (Starting With 0 Meows)
2.1 Creating Your Zoi
Create your Zoi normally.
Optional but highly recommended: create a capsule wardrobe appropriate for starting from nothing. This keeps early gameplay grounded and immersive.
Example feminine capsule wardrobe:
- 2 tank tops (different colors)
- 1 long-sleeve top
- 2 pairs of pants
- 1 pair of shorts
- 1 dress
- 1 over-shirt
- 1 jacket or cardigan
- 2 pairs of shoes (sneakers + flip-flops)
All outfits should be created using only these items. The wardrobe may be expanded after leaving Lot 1.
2.2 Starting Money
- Start with 0 meows
- Welfare cash must be removed (once drained you will be granted 1000 welfare cash automatically by system)
- Welfare objects may be kept or sold
- No loans, gifts, or free money
2.2.5 Draining Starting Money (Required Setup Step)
InZOI does not currently provide a built-in way to manually remove starting money.
For this challenge, starting funds must be drained using the following method.
This step is mandatory to ensure all players begin from the same baseline.
Approved Method: Back-Lot Drain Structure
To remove starting money, you must construct a thin, sealed structure at the back edge of Lot 1.
Structure requirements
The structure must run left to right across the back of the lot
It may extend forward only enough to fit a queen-sized bed
No doors
No windows
No usable access
The Zoi should not be able to enter or interact with it
This structure functions as a sealed storage wall, not a room.
Visually, it will resemble a thick wall at the back of the lot.
Using the Structure to Drain Funds
Purchase furniture or items with the sole intent of removing money
Place all purchased items inside the sealed structure
You may hold the ALT key to freely place and stack furniture so it fits within the space
All items placed inside are considered permanently abandoned
The Zoi should not recognize these items as usable or accessible.
Important Restrictions
Items placed in the drain structure may never be accessed, used, sold, or refunded. It will be left behind when you move out of lot 1 (explained how further below)
The structure must remain fully sealed
All money spent this way is considered starter money and permanently lost
You must drain funds until you reach 0 meows
Once your balance reaches 0 meows, you must leave Lot 1 immediately, officially beginning Phase 1.
Electrical Item Warning (Strongly Recommended)
It is strongly recommended that you do not purchase electrical appliances when draining money.
Electrical items may:
Trigger electricity bills
Continue generating costs even if never used
This behavior has not been fully tested, but to avoid unintended difficulty, non-electrical furniture is advised. I bought appliances when I started and put in the wall as I looked for most expensive items to drain cash fast. Keep an eye out for updates for when I have a chance to test this method further.
Why This Method Exists
This method exists purely to:
Enforce a true zero start
Prevent exploits
Keep all playthroughs fair and comparable
It is a mechanical workaround, not a gameplay feature, and is only used during setup.
2.3 Lot 1: The Starter Lot
You must start on an empty lot. Lot 1 exists only to drain starter funds, anchor early survival, and act as a temporary shelter later. It is not a home.
2.4 Shack Rules (Lot 1 Only)
- Exactly 4 walls and 1 door
- Completely open floor plan
- No hallways or separate rooms
- Bathroom must be visible from the door
- Must be barely large enough for necessities
- Windows allowed
Allowed: upgrading individual furniture
Not allowed: expanding footprint, adding rooms, converting into a full house
2.5 Leaving the Lot (Phase 1 Begins)
Once you reach 0 meows, leave Lot 1 immediately. Do not intentionally return until you have 1,000 meows. If the Zoi returns autonomously, leave again.
3. The Phases
Phase 1 – Unhoused Survival
Rules:
-You must leave plot 1 as soon as you get your balance to zero
- No intentional return to Lot 1
- No item production on Lot 1
- Income only from public spaces
- No jobs, careers, or businesses
- No NPC home usage
-Crime is allowed in all phases and all wealth paths, but consequences must always be accepted.
Unlock condition: Reach 1,000 meows
Story ideas: eviction, running away, starting over, survival-first mindset
Phase 2 – Shack Survival
Rules:
- Lot 1 may now be used as shelter
- Production allowed on Lot 1
- Shack restrictions still apply
- No wealth path chosen yet
Story ideas: squatting, temporary shelter, barely scraping by
Phase 3 – First Real Home & Path Choice
Leaving Lot 1 requires a transfer protocol:
1. Meet an NPC not part of your story
2. Build enough relationship to invite them in
3. Move them in with 1,000 meows
4. Move out alone
5. Leave the lot, furniture, and their funds behind
****Exception**** if you choose to make a business with a home above it. You are unable to get rid of the residential lot. I just cancel my zoi going back to her lot unless its for deliveries. I locked the shack so she can't go inside and am considering trying to turn it into a post office.
Furniture refunds from Lot 1 are never allowed.
Wealth Paths
Path A – Business: income from owned business only
Path B – Conventional Work: jobs, careers, popstar
Path C – Skill-Based Independent: sell skill output only
Path D – Crime: overlay path allowed in all others with consequences
Phase 4 – Stability & Life Progression
Unlocks:
- Moving in with partner: full home + 5,000 meows (partner adds mouths, not money)
- Marriage: full home + 20,000 meows
- City moves & custom builds: full home + 5,000 meows
- Vacations: marriage or full home + 20,000 meows
Custom builds must be fully livable immediately with essentials purchased.
Final Phase – Completion
Completion is player-defined but generally includes financial stability, a full home, and a self-sustaining life.
Death & Legacy Rules
If the main Zoi dies before completion, the challenge may continue only with their biological or adopted child. If that child dies before completion, the challenge fails.
