Alice was relieved with the man finally left after what she said. Some people were so incredibly annoying that she didn’t know what to do with herself. She was about to go back to her work when someone spoke to her. She looked over to see the blonde and simply shrugged. “Yeah, well, some people really shouldn’t be allowed out in public.”

Elle smiled gently at the woman’s words. It was hard to tell if the girl was just being snarky or if she really felt that way, but Elle found it humorous all the same. “I suppose you’re right. Well, I’ll let you get back to your work.”

“No. My fault.” Adam got up his things that fell with him as well. He tried to keep his legs back on standing position (which now hurt a little). His hand scratched a little bit but he wasn’t too bothered until he tried to get up. He covered his little scratch on his left with his palm, not wanting the other party to worry much about him. But the scratch wasn’t covered as good as he thought. “I’m good. I’m okay. It’s nothing big,” he lied.

Elle could see the scratch the kid was trying to hide, and she gave him a disapproving look. “If you’re going to lie, you could try a little harder. Let me see it.” If he wasn’t going to be responsible about his injuries, someone had to be. Elle didn’t want to be, of course, but she couldn’t just leave him without knowing if he had been cut up.

Getting an early start was always a good way to begin the day, but now that Elle was reading the menu, she wished she had just stayed in. The breakfast menu contained items she had grown up eating, not having realized they were traditional Irish dishes. The puddings were particularly painful to her; they were her father’s favorite part of the most important meal of the day. Some days, that was all he would eat. It had been years since she’d even laid eyes upon the dish, and now she was staring right at its description. She was fortunately pulled out of her daze by the waitress, although the woman wasn’t too keen on kindness this morning. “Oh. Sorry. I’ll just take some eggs,” she said, straightening her posture in the chair as she set the menu down.

Adam should have been more careful when he rushed. He moved swiftly until he accidentally tripped over someone’s foot. He swore that his legs were made from noodles and not bones. “Oh, shi–oot.” He tried to keep the swearing PG, in practice when he’s near his niece and nephew. He had fallen on his knees. His bag had fallen down from his shoulder. In truly Adam Hannon’s fashion, he wasn’t worried much about himself (as his legs didn’t feel hurt). “Are you okay? I’m so sorry,” he said, hadn’t got up nor picked his bag.

Elle liked to believe every move she made was calculated, but that was simply impossible, for how could she know that a stranger would trip over her foot? Her stride was normal and her feet were not large, and yet she caused someone else to fall while also throwing herself off balance. Even in her heels, Elle was able to keep herself upright, but the stranger hadn’t been so lucky. “No, no, it’s okay. I’m sorry,” she replied as she looked down to find the man sitting on his knees. He had made a nasty thump when he landed, and it was possible he had gotten hurt. “I’m fine, but are you alright? That sounded like a hard fall.”

“I’m sorry, but do you mind? You are breathing really loudly and I’m kinda in the middle of something. It’s distracting.”

Elle glanced up from her book to look at the man sitting across from her. He was overweight, which most likely explained why his breathing was so loud, but it had seemed to get to the girl sitting nearby. Her blue eyes followed the man as he rose from his seat with a huff and walked out of sight without saying much of anything. A long moment passed before Elle looked at the brunette sitting near her. “I’m surprised you said something to him,” she started quietly. “Most people wouldn’t have.”

Maeve appreciated snark. It seemed inappropriate for her to not appreciate it if she dished it out so frequently. So, when this woman took the bait, Mae smiled. “It’s always about who can drink someone under the table – especially in those American movies, but what’s really impressive is being able to handle it the next day,” Maeve took a sip from her glass. “I don’t drink much either,” she lied, “at least not by myself. I’m counting that,” she smirked. “Maeve. Maeve Daley. Pleasure’s mine,” she introduced herself, hoping the woman would abandon her book and be her company – even if it were just for an empty conversation.

The talk of Americans competing to see which person could drink the most made Elle smile. Ah, Americans. So fickle and angry. “I would count that,” she commented. “I’m Elle Warren.” The blonde let out a small sigh as she felt herself closing her book and giving the woman her attention, although part of her still wanted to read. Before she could say anything more, her waitress returned with the non-alcoholic drink. She took a sip then turned back to Maeve. “So, if you don’t drink much when you’re by yourself, why are you here?”

Peter sat at a big enough table to comfortably fit his laptop and whatever pile of glasses ended up accumulating throughout the night. There were just days he wrote better, more honest, when he was drunk. It helped him write more, especially when he was on a deadline. And though a lot of it would have to be rewritten anyway, it was good to get all of his ideas, even half-written ones, onto paper… well, word document. 

The servers all knew Peter. He frequented the bar since he moved back to Waverly. They kept his tab open, and his glass full throughout the night, and he always tipped them well. 

He was in the middle of a sentence, when he heard a woman say she ordered a virgin mojito, not one with rum. He chuckled to himself and turned toward her. “Sorry to overhear, but you said you want a virgin mojito? Isn’t alcohol the point of coming to a bar? You know that’s just soda water, lime, mint, and sugar, right? You may as well just order sparkling water with a side of lime.”

At the voice, Elle turned her head to see the man who was talking trash about her simple drink. By the time he stopped talking, his words were going in one ear and out the other. “I could have, but then it wouldn’t have been a mojito. I wouldn’t get the pub experience,” she replied with an even and calm voice despite her slight annoyance at the stranger. It was a normal thing at pubs and bars to speak to strangers, but Elle wasn’t really in the mood for conversation with people she didn’t know. She was actually here to avoid having a conversation with her mother, someone she knew and loved.

Maeve had been in auditions for the past few weeks, watching kids and adults from all over the area audition to be a member of what had slowly become her independent theatre company. None of this was as she had planned, but it was beyond what she could have ever imagined. Though, sometimes – sometimes it felt like the entire world were weighing upon her shoulders. So, instead of going straight home and curling into bed with Netflix or calling Rian to spend the night with him and Nick, Maeve went down to the local to have a drink by herself. 

Normally, this behavior would worry her – drinking alone was a sign that something was terribly wrong in her life, but maybe tonight she just needed a drink and to listen to the endless chatter in a room full of people she knew from various places throughout her life before the escape to New York City. She picked a spot, near a woman who seemed more interested in her book than anything else, and sat down – waving over a barmaid to order herself a whisky straight. While waiting, she noticed the blonde near her have an issue with her drink. “You alright there?” Maeve asked, looking over at the woman. “I mean, a virgin mojito? You must be havin’ a tough day. That’s one hard drink,” she joked, taking a drink from hers.

Just as Elle found the place she left off from in her novel, her attention was pulled away by a nearby voice. Hearing a sarcastic remark after she ordered in a bar was nearly routine by now. “Yes, it can be too strong for some people, but I can handle myself just fine.” Her eyes lingered on the other woman’s features for just a moment too long before they settled back on the book in her hand. Glancing back over at the stranger, she felt the urge to not abandon the conversation, as if there was one at all. “I don’t drink much.”

Since becoming a bartender, Ned had gotten used to being semi-nocturnal; it wasn’t quite conducive to a real social life, but it paid well and got him one step closer to the job he wanted. Somewhere between the new puppy and the regular visits to the comic shop, though, his sleep schedule was a disaster–tonight, for example, he was barely into his shift and already feeling groggy and slow. He hadn’t sent out a wrong drink the entire time he’d worked at O’Hara’s, so when Sarah brought back the mojito from table six, he fixed the mistake as quickly as possible and waved her off when she made to take it back.

“I’m so sorry about that mix-up, miss,” he said, setting the drink down on the table. “Please don’t let this affect your judgement of Sarah, the fault’s all mine. Is there anything else you need?”

When Elle looked up, she was confused for a moment as to why she was looking at a man instead of her waitress, but upon hearing his words, she felt a pang of guilt. Had she been rude to the girl? She honestly couldn’t recall; it wouldn’t be out of character for her to rub someone the wrong way. “Oh. No worries, I completely understand,” she replied with a small nod as she lied her book down to give the man her whole attention. He claimed the mistake was his fault, telling her that he was the bartender. “I’m sure it’s unusual for someone to order an alcohol-free drink at this hour.” She offered him a polite smile. “And no, I think I’m good here. Thank you, though.”

It was late in the evening, and although Elle would have preferred to be in a more comfortable environment, she didn’t feel like going home just yet. Her mother was home, and now that Elle had come to stay with her, the silence between them was often awkward. Both of them wanted to fix their relationship, but neither of them were brave enough to take the first step. The more time Elle had away from her mother right now, the better. She was in good health and could take care of herself. It’d be some time before Elle was unable to leave her side.

The small bar the girl had settled on wasn’t dingy, but it was far from fancy. It reminded her of something she’d see in a small town on a television show, but the lighting was good and the other patrons weren’t too noisy. There was a novel in her hands when her waitress walked past, but Elle had been keeping an eye out for her. “Excuse me, Miss. I ordered a virgin mojito and this one is alcoholic.” The woman apologized and took the drink back, allowing Elle to settle into her novel once again.

Despite being born and raised in France, Siobhan grew up surrounded by multiple cultures. Her father was from England and her mother Ireland. Siobhan always felt more drawn to her father than her mother, and the pair would often spend as much time together as they could handle. With her father being a lawyer, he often stayed up late, and little Siobhan would sit in his office reading or drawing while he worked. As she entered primary school, Siobhan began to push away the influence of her mother’s heritage. She began going by her middle name Ellie in order to feel more included among her peers. Her mother hated it, but there was little she could do as she believed in letting her daughter do what she pleased. The separation of cultures and free time caused a major rift in their relationship at an early age.

In middle school, Ellie made a habit of visiting her father’s firm in the city rather than returning home after her classes. There she began to make friends with her father’s co-workers and gain an interest in what they did for a living. Her time there later inspired her to focus on law, but before she could graduate, her father suddenly fell ill and died. An autopsy later showed he had colorectal and pancreatic cancer. His demise shook the foundation of Ellie’s relationship with her mother; it brought them closer together, but after some time, Ellie felt she needed to escape and have time to herself. After graduation, she went to study law at Cambridge, the same university her father had graduated from.

When Ellie returned to France years later, she was going by the name Elle and was completely focused on her career rather than her social life. The time she had spent apart from her mother had only alienated them, so the change in her personality didn’t do much to affect their relationship. Elle was given a position at her father’s old firm, and to her, it was like coming home. Cambridge had been her sanctuary, but now that she was in a place she knew and loved, she felt at peace. She occasionally called her mother to check on her and give her updates, but they rarely saw one another.

A year later, Elle received a call from her mother. She had returned to her hometown in Ireland, a small place called Waverly, to live out the rest if her days in peace. According to her doctor, the woman had been suffering from cervical cancer for months, and after surgery, it was discovered it had metastasized, spreading to her stomach and liver. She was given eight months to life at most. Completely take aback, Elle quickly finished or handed off her cases to others and flew to Waverly to rekindle her relationship with her mother and be the daughter her mother deserved.
