“Here, I’m a queen, a hero. Out there, in the real world, I’m just another college student who doesn’t know what she’s doing with her life.”
hometown: HOLIDAY, FLORIDA
occupation: ASSOCIATE AT BAM! COMICS AND FULL TIME COLLEGE STUDENT
Alice is the oldest of five children. When she was thirteen years old, her father remarried and she quickly became the stepchild. Before the divorce, Alice was doted on, her father giving her anything she wanted. But her mother’s alcoholism and incessant need for male attention made her father not only resent her but Alice as well. His second marriage lasted longer and resulted in four children, further pushing the attention away from Alice. She became nothing more than a babysitter, her father always working and her step mother refusing to stay home even though she had no reason to work. She had thought about living with her mother, she had even brought it up to her father once. He just laughed at her and said go ahead.
Alice found a way to escape her boring life early on through reading and playing video games. In these worlds, she could be the hero; she could mean something other than trying to figure out what was for dinner as if she was a thirty something housewife. When she was eleven years old, she discovered The Hive and has been playing ever since. At the age of fourteen, Alice started talking to another player. At first, Alice hated the other player. They were always rude and didn’t seem to do anything in the game. But when Alice ran into him on accident, the two started talking to this other player and found within him something she never had. He genuinely cared about what she had to say and seemed to be concerned for her. After years of what can only be described as an on-and-off relationship, Alice quickly found herself falling in love with him. It didn’t take much for him to convince her to run away from her home life. After spending years being practically a slave for her family, Alice had enough. On one foggy fall morning when she was turning eighteen, she snuck out of the house and hopped a plane. She had spent the previous week in a haze of most nights spent staring at her computer screen.
It wasn’t at all like she had imagined. The player was who he said he was, but it was…different, strange. Alice was awkward in life, not like her bubbly self online. She wasn’t exactly catfished but the guy wasn’t all he cracked up to be. He was supposed to be her prince, the guy who rescued her from her tower. Instead he questioned why she wasn’t doing anything with her life, despite being a mostly A student and her dreams of going to college. He spoke about them getting an apartment together and in the same sentence, questioned if they could. He wanted to give her the life she wanted, the fairytale, but he wasn’t willing to take the leap and do it. So instead of building a life together, Alice went back home, much to her own chagrin. She thought it would be hard to face her family, for them to realize how she truly felt, but they barely noticed. In fact, they didn’t acknowledge it at all. So Alice put her head down and got back on track. Once she graduated high school, Alice applied to the college furthest from her family and moved there. She told herself it wasn’t to get closer to the boy she met online, even though he lived an hour away.
