No offense meant to Elliot, but Finch wasn’t going to throw his lover into the line of fire just because he could survive the burns. He’d protect him—even if that meant indeed turning himself in for a crime he hadn’t committed. That being said, he didn’t want to have to jump in the line anyway—the line-up, at any rate. He wasn’t a killer. He was a criminal, sure, but Finch perhaps lacked the backbone needed to commit cold-blooded murder. Except, of course, for the whole Thomas incident, but still. That had mostly been an accident.
And it hadn’t stuck, anyway, so it hardly countered or anything…
Stumbling across lines of debris; caution tape, and various other issues with the blocked-off street, Finch coughed and inhaled—a wheezy, rasping rattle of a breath that threatened death more than it did life. He hadn’t been given his inhaler, for one obsolete reason or another. And he had a few attacks the first few nights in jail, too. Not a good combination.
So off he staggered, haphazardly slinking and stumbling Elliot’s way like a wayward spirit, flickering in and out of focus between rising plumes of discarded manhole covers and the settling dust of three blown-out buildings. Green eyes watering once more, he flashed Elliot a feeble smile amid the wreckage in the street, his gaze searching the healer’s own with a desperate; hungry stare.
“…I dunno if ye’ve noticed,” he croaked faintly, gesturing with a vague hand and another quiver in his legs. “But it seems no’ a damn fing’s alrigh’ in t’is fuckin’ town at t’e mo’.” And with that, the little man finally collapsed headlong into Elliot’s arms, clutching his shoulders and quaking with another round of coughs.
“Missed y’,” he managed to mumble, sweat on his brow. “Bloody ‘ell, Elliot, I missed you…”
And no offense meant to Finch, but Elliot wasn’t about to leave his lover to face the fires on his own, whether or not he could heal from the burns. Even if he wasn’t quite sure how one proceeded in these situations or what the best course of action was, he’d be there as best he could with whatever he could. And somehow, he trusted, things would work out in the end. They just had to.
It was probably for the best, really, that Elliot didn’t know fully the fate which had befallen Finch while he was in jail. Oh, he could take a guess here and there (it didn’t take a conspiracy theoriest to guess that what the town had gone through not even a few hours prior had at least something to do with Finch, even if he wasn’t the cause), but the full knowledge of how poorly his lover had been treated would not lead to any happy places or causes for elation.
Looking about, his expression caught between too many emotions to properly name, he let out something torn between a laugh and a sigh. “No, I don’t suppose any of it is properly alright. I’m simply hoping that if you are not quite alright, that I can help somehow.” And as Finch fell into him, he wrapped his arms around the smaller of the two, holding him as close as he could.
“I’ve missed you too, Rupert,” Elliot whispered, burying his face against the flyer’s hair, eyes closed as though he would wake from a dream if he opened his eyes. “So very much. I’ve been so worried about you.”
Coming from someone who had set many a blaze and been on the receiving end of a few burns, Finch would rather Elliot stay behind—stay safe. But in lieu of the fact that his lover happened to be quite headstrong if need be, Finch knew it would be a losing argument before he so much as opened his mouth. Elliot was just…like that. Difficult, but in the best possible way. A loving, insistent, nurturing way that was reminiscent of—not that he’d ever tell him—some sort of nesting bird. Fitting, considering the circumstances and with whom the T.A. currently associated…
Finch had yet to see, however, the tip of Elliot’s temper. He had no idea how Elliot had reacted at the news to him being in jail—obviously he must’ve known, just like his parents, and yet…no one had been by to see him. He’d been abandoned in there with his thoughts and Hale’s constant hounding. It was exhausting just thinking about it, and it bled the color from Finch like a bruised petal off a wilting flower.
“Y’elp jus’ by ‘oldin’ me like this, don’ya,” he mumbled into Elliot’s shoulder, kneading his arms gently as he tried to rise, holding onto the taller man for dear life as he wobbled upright somewhat. Watery green eyes scanned Elliot’s face as the snub-nosed Northerner inhaled shakily and looked around, then back to Elliot once more—just making sure he was a., still safe, and b., still there. Real.
He returned the hug and closed his own eyes tightly, fingers strengthening as they found purchase behind Elliot instead, holding him closer than close. “Then why didn’ye visit me?” He mumbled weakly. “Not tha’m complainin’ or anyfing but fer feck’s sake Ell, s’been an awfully long time since I las’saw ye…though y…y’ated me now, or somefin’…”
Cliche phrases such as "If you're a bird, I'm a bird" came to mind. But stories of feathered friends and flocking together covered but the brief outline of their feelings. Hard-headed when he needed to be, but only ever when he thought it was for the best; a good trait which could, and had before, gone bad. But in the end, he only ever meant to help, including in being something of a nesting bird.
Perhaps it was best that the temper Elliot himself wished to forget remained hidden. Usually even-tempered, calm and reasonable, there were but few things which could draw out his anger and it never produced anything good in return. From Maria to the bullies, he had regretted his actions, snapping and yelling, a fire burning inside he wished to douse as soon as possible.
Finch's arrest had sparked that same fire, yes, but it had also drenched it with worry, a softer emotion by far. This was not to say, however, that that spark hadn't grown each time he was denied a visit. Frustration, it seemed, was not his friend as he was tempted more and more with each rejection to simply stress his point by yelling it at the stubborn officer who had flat-out refused.
Fingers running through Finch's hair, down his neck and across his shoulders, as though trying to make sure that this was definitely happening and Elliot hadn't gotten knocked on the head during the chaos, Elliot whispered his words, afraid of shattering the moment, "If I can do anything else to help, anything at all, you only have but to name it and I shall. I promise."
"Rupert," Elliot choked out, "I did try to visit, more than once, mind you. I did try but...I was denied each time by a surly police officer." One hand slowly raising to cradle Finch's head against him, he continued, "I do not, nor have I ever hated you, Rupert. Not even close."
I feel like now is an appropriate time for this.

Flawless Faces ↳ Gareth David Lloyd
Work hadn’t truly been work before, not until the past little while. For while it was, in the end, a job he had to perform, it had never dragged on before like it had started to now that the first thing on Elliot’s mind had not been the classroom, but on one person in particular and the worry that…
Panic. Sheer, undiluted terror. For life and limb, for wellbeing and for his powers. Whatever Ludo wanted of him, Finch hadn’t stuck around to find out. He had flown the coop, as he always had—wings outstretched and tears streaming; breath coming in frantic, sharp bursts whenever he found the urge to breathe return to him at all.
He was so sick of being a pawn. Rupert was tired of being pushed around by everyone and everything. He was tired of living in fear, being framed for things he didn’t do, and generally spat upon. Even his own parents hadn’t bothered to check up on him—or maybe they already knew. They had to know; about their delinquent, allegedly-murderous son.
It was only when he knew he was safe to land that he did, stumbling to a halt with a crash in the street, banging into a few cans and nearly cascading headlong through a nearby cellar door. Legs trembling, he rubbed his knees and hunched over, trying to hold onto his dignity and his mostly-empty stomach. Practically emaciated from his time behind bars, Finch slowly rose and rubbed a sunken eye.
Back where it all began. Because he was not going to run like some convict. He was going to face the law and show that he wasn’t going to go out without a fight. He was done being a coward.
Of course, a familiar back helped matters. Soothed him, really. He saw the defined, dancer-like lines of Elliot’s shoulders and waist and he nearly broke down then and there from sheer relief.
“El,” he croaked, hobbling forward behind him with a limp and a stagger. “El—Elliot…Elliot!” His knight in shining…suitage, come to rescue him at last.
If Finch wanted to stand and face the law head-on, he wouldn't have to stand alone. Elliot, never once believing that Finch was capable of murder or whatever else it was he had been charged with, would stay at his side and support him as best he could. After all, Elliot still believed in a justice system where those who were innocent would go free. There wouldn't be enough evidence, witness testimony, something and anything would come to light to attest his innocence.
It might be a little old-fashioned, perhaps optimistic, to think that way, but Elliot did. And in the end, he'd rather be caught up in optimism (no matter how foolish) than be dragged down by darker thoughts.
What made him turn, the noise which drew him from those optimistic thoughts floating among the knowledge of how grim the situation was or could be, was not the clashing and clanging. Typical city noises, nothing out of the ordinary to hear there, he disregarded it before his mind fully took the time to process it. But the voice he heard, the one which managed to rise above the din of the city just enough for him to hear, captured his attention without a moment's hesitation.
Turning on his heel, not quite belieing he had truly heard correctly - after all, Finch was supposed to be in jail - his blue eyes sought out the source only to land upon the very one he had been coming to see.
"Rupert!" he called back in response as he strode to meet him, arms rising to catch the younger man should he fall. "What happened? You look...haggard, if you don't mind me saying. Are you quite alright?" Worry crossed his face.

He hadn't seen Finch for days now and despite his best efforts, he hadn't been able to see him at the jail either. Oh, he'd been told of what Rupert had been charged with (though he could never believe it, not even a little bit), but visitation had been denied time and time again. And word-of-mouth could never make up for seeing him face-to-face.
That was why he was heading towards the jail one more time. Foolish thinking, really, to think that, even after being denied so many times, he could be admitted now. Wasn't the definition of insanity doing something over and over again and hoping for a different result?
But off he was, walking through the streets, worry biting at his heels.
