i asked my italian grandfather if the rough parts of italy were called the spaghetto and he looked at me with so much shame
chemistry!
His eyes widened as the other leaned in closer to view the coupon. As soon as he heard the date, he could feel himself cracking up inside, but he couldn’t help from cracking a smile, even if Ellis couldn’t see it. “True, you gave it a shot,” he pulled back again. “While that’s convincing, I want to chip in at least. Like paying the tip,” he laughed as his friend gave a face he wouldn’t forget. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, tell me about it on our bromantic meal. I’ll promise to give you my two cents.”
“I guess that’s all you can do in life. Try until you succeed...great advice, right? I should be a self-help motivational speaker.” Ellis let out a snicker, looking at his friend as he dug into his pocket for his car keys. “Your two or three dollar tip is much appreciated, sweetie...or maybe five or six, depending on if we stop for Chinese and pizza or just get to one then decide to take a rain check on the other. Too many decisions for my brain to handle, honestly. That’s why I think we should go with the flow and see how we feel once we get there.” Once they reached his car, he unlocked it, hopping into the drivers seat and immediately reaching for his stack of music mix CD’s from the glove box. “Dude, do you wanna hear my power-ballad playlist? I just made it the other day, and let me tell you, if you ever feel like getting in touch with your inner diva, this is how you do it. I got a few weird looks at red lights for singing along, but that’s their issue, not mine.”

Ellis’ hug was something he was caught off guard by, but Blake still hugged him in return with a chuckle. “Yeah, whatever you say,” he shook his head, still holding the embrace as much as the other was until he heard Ellis grab something from his pocket. His eyes wandered to see what he was getting, but he couldn’t tell until he pointed it out. “You probably do, let me see,” he said pulling back to see the crumpled up paper in his hands.
“Hold on, hold on,” Ellis said, leaning in closer to Blake and pointing to a tiny sentence of writing on the paper. His finger ran under the words as he spoke. “I think I can read it now, you have better lighting over here...’Expires January 2nd...2014.’” He went quiet as he noticed that, and he could only assume that the other coupon was way over the expiration date too. “Huh. Well...I can’t say I didn’t try,” he sighed, patting Blake’s shoulder before releasing the guy from his grasp. “Y’know what, fuck it, man. For my best friend, I’m willing to pay full price. After all the times you’d sneak me some of those cafeteria tater tots during detention...” He trailed off, pretending to get all choked up from the memory. “I can never fully repay you for that, man, but I can try. Let’s go have a nice bromantic meal together and talk about life.”
Blake laughed before Ellis asked his famous questions. It was a hilarious to Blake that his companion would always have these drastic introductions to his simple questions. “Okay, man, that’s not a life or death situation, but I’d say whichever coupon’s bound to expire first. If they expire around the same time, then get both. If you feel that’s going too far, I’d say, you should go with Chinese.”
“If this was a third world country it could be.” Ellis starred at his best friend for a moment before reaching over and pulling him into a tight hug. “Babe, this is why you’re my bestie. Both. You’re too smart for me sometimes, seriously.” Still keeping Blake in his embrace, Ellis reached into his pocket, pulling the now crumpled coupons out and squinting at the fine print. “Shit, dude, I feel like I’m eighty. Can you read those? Maybe I just need glasses.”

“I’ve never outright asked her if 5 British guys being in the room gets her in the mood more or not, I’ll make sure to ask her next time we’re both in the apartment. Instead of a scrunchie on the door knob I could text you five minutes before saying ‘Ellis me and Veronica are coming over, get out or I’ll burn everything you own’? That could be just as good as a secret code?” Oliver suggested, trying not to smile. “Your brother’s a science guy? Knowing you, that surprises me a little. I see you as if you were my little five year old cousin rather than brother. If I had one, obviously.” He grinned at him when he huffed, proving his point of Ellis reminding him of a five year old. “My excuse is I find beards and stubble highly annoying and too much hassle so I shave. Although, obnoxious hipster is my middle name.” Oliver smiled slightly when Ellis spoke about Christmas presents. “That’s actually…Really nice. And thoughtful. But one everyday would be a bit much. I suppose you’d be quite easy to buy for, if I got like a packet of glowsticks and gave you one a day I’m sure you’d amuse yourself. No, I can’t say I have heard that version of Last Christmas and I feel as if I’m going to regret saying that because you’ll play it now.” He laughed slightly when Ellis went quiet. “Yeah, right. A different batter. You just straight up like… Swallowed it whole I was quite scared for you in that time. But if you’d prefer not to speak about it I’ll respect your wishes.”
“You should! You never know what could get her in the groove. Maybe she’s into the accents, you can always try and fake one around her to get the juices flowing. ...I mean, it doesn’t have to be so violent,” he shook his head a bit, sighing. “And why is it my stuff that would be burned in this scenario? What about your dictionaries? Because dude, I tried reading one of those when I was in the bathroom once and it was so friggen boring, why do you even keep those around when you can just download an app for it?” Ellis nodded at the mention of his brother, clearing his throat a bit when the words science guy left Oliver’s mouth. “Bill Nye, the science guy!” He got up, walking over to the coffee table where a bunch of unread mail sat and decided to include it in his performance. He started flicking them one-by-one into the air, chanting “Bill! Bill! Bill!” with each one that went airborne. Once he finished with that, he got right back on the subject. “Believe it, man. I got the funny gene, he got the nerdy gene. You’d probably like him, he’s the one that leaves all the comments on my Instagram about how I look like an idiot. I take it as a compliment, but not everyone else would.” Ellis squinted his eyes a bit, starring at Oliver and thinking about his comment. “Dude, I thought your middle name was Eugene...obviously we’re not as close as we should be. But wait, seriously? Would you do that? I think they have a multi-colored pack of glow sticks at the Dollar Tree, I’d love it if you got me one of those, it would be a nice surprise ever day to see what color I get...and we can save them if we go to a concert together or something! And dude, you’re missing out. It isn’t Christmas without Cascada.” He let out a heavy sigh as the cookie talk still went on, squeezing his eyes shut in dramatic fashion. “Look, I was just...I was really hungry, okay? It happens. When your brain is on food mode, sometimes nothing but satisfying the hunger matters. Not even the fact that it feels kind of papery in your mouth as you’re chewing it.”
at my 16th birthday party my friend john accidentally flashed one of his balls and i remember it in vivid color & detail like sometimes i forget the faces of loved ones but that single nut haunts me. one time i fell in a ditch and i kept sabotaging myself like “what if the last thing i think of before i die is john’s nut” like i wasn’t actually gonna die but these are the kinds of things you consider when you fall in a ditch. john’s nut
“I’m definitely one of them. Children do nothing for me. I don’t really understand why anybody would want to have them before the age of like, forty. And even then, it’s totally just to say you did it.” Catalina said, with total sincerity. "You couldn’t make a face tattoo work. Unless it was a red clown nose, you’re shit out of luck. Although You actually have pretty good bone structure, so it would be a shame to draw all over it. I can’t exactly picture you with a full sleeve either.” She shrugged.
Catalina wrinkled her nose when he mentioned butter. “Are you kidding me? How are you not a giant ball of lard? If I even thought about buttered popcorn, it would take me three hours in the gym to work it off of my hips.” She explained. She took her appearance so seriously that it bled into every aspect of her life, from the time she woke up in the morning, to the colour nail polish she used, to the choices of food she put in her body, and she had made an enemy of carbs in any form. “It isn’t even fair. I mean, it’s obvious you don’t really care that much about the size of your waistline,” she gestured to his bagel.
“It’s a bagel, Ellis, and unless you’re both planning a severe crash diet, it’s not exactly going to count as groceries for the week. You have no idea how much this is legitimately agitating me that you can’t be trusted to buy a weekly food shop.” She said. Although it was nothing to do with her, she was a control freak by nature, and the bossy, perfectionist side of her was bothered by his ice cream and Doritos admission.
“Eh, to each their own. And...really? You think so?” he replied, striking a ‘thinker’ pose once she mentioned him having good bone structure. “My mom always said I could be a model if I tried to dress better...but I think that was more of a way for her to get me to wear suits to weddings and stuff. I really wanted to wear one of those t-shirts that has the suit drawn on them.” All her words about fat and unhealthy food basically went in one ear and out the other for Ellis, shrugging once she suggested not caring about his figure. He shrugged as he thought about that, chewing absent-mindedly. “There’s nothing wrong with being a bit big boned. And look, I mean, I eat healthy sometimes, I just have a really fast metabolism. Look at this,” he said, pulling up his shirt just to emphasize his point of being super skinny. “I could eat two big macs and still stay like this. It’s a curse.”
He finished off the bagel with a final swallow, listening as she went on another one of her spiels. He reached over and took a sip of her lemonade as she talked, wondering if she would notice or not but deciding to do it anyways. “Damn, that is good. Maybe you were right about that whole freshly squeezed shit. Ahem, anyways,” he said, quickly wiping his face off with one of the napkins on the table, “it’s not that I can’t totally be trusted, I just need a bit of help from time to time. I mean, Michael Phelps didn’t become an amazing swimmer overnight, right?” he nodded, trying to get in touch with his inner motivational speaker, although that was easier said than done. “Just like I’m not an amazing grocery shopper. I just need a bit of time and experience, it’s all good.”
