The Sun Always Sets in the West | A story about family, love, friendship, crime, and escape from abuse.

Zoe has always protected Allison from their fathers wrath, but that all changes the day their mother died. Leaving Alli behind, Zoe decides to do some soul-searching to put meaning to the years of abuse she's suffered. Instead, she finds more pain.

Giving up after three years, a returning Zoe finds that their father hasn't changed, her sister resents her, and worse, is now engaged to a man just like their father. It takes patience and time, but Zoe convinces her sister to leave them behind and start fresh - this time, with her.

Unfortunately, leaving isn't always easy, and with as dangerous as their father is, it becomes that much harder.

Quick tips for writing kisses

⇰ the pause. THE PAUSE. like “are we doing this? oh god we’re doing this.”

⇰ looking at each other’s mouths like it’s a life-or-death decision

⇰ someone whispering “can I?” or “just once” before going for it and RUINING ME EMOTIONALLY

⇰ hands. gripping shirts. cupping faces. hovering like “do I touch?? I WANNA TOUCH”

⇰ breath hitching?? yes. shakiness?? absolutely.

⇰ that stupid moment where one of them pulls back a few inches like “wait are you sure” and the other just goes for it again

⇰ kissing like they’re scared it’ll be the last time

Quick tips for writing REAL DENIAL

Denial is the emotional equivalent of duct-taping a sinking ship and pretending it’s “just a little wet.”

~ Denial starts small. A character insists, “It’s not a big deal,” while the problem is literally chewing on their ankle.

~ They rationalize EVERYTHING. “He didn’t ignore me; he just… didn’t see the message… for 12 hours…” Sure, babe…

~ They avoid the obvious. Won’t ask the question. Won’t check the evidence. Won’t confront the person. Silence is their safe place.

~ They overcommit to the lie. Big enthusiastic “I swear I’m fine!” energy that fools absolutely no one.

~ They overwork or distract themselves. Cleaning, baking, reorganizing the sock drawer by emotional trauma level. Anything but thinking.

~ They get defensive. “Why would you even ask that?” Because you’re vibrating like a feral raccoon, that’s why.

~ They downplay the symptoms. “It’s just a headache” while they look like death reheated.

~ They gaslight themselves. “It didn’t hurt that bad.” “It’s nothing.” Lies, lies, lies.

~ The truth comes in bursts. A sudden snap. A quiet breakdown. A whispered “I can’t keep pretending.” Denial always cracks eventually. ALWAYS…

Show, Don't Just Tell: A Quick Reminder!

Instead of telling your reader something, show them.

Think of it like this:

Telling: "She was sad." (Okay, but how do we know she was?)

Showing: "Her shoulders slumped, and her gaze fixed on the rain streaking the windowpane. A single tear tracked a path down her cheek." (Now we feel it.)

See the difference? Showing immerses your reader. Telling keeps them at arm's length.

✭ you yawning, and them automatically pulling you closer without thinking, like comforting you is a reflex they learned long before loving you.

✭ they notice you’re cold before you do, and wordlessly hold out their hands for yours.

✭ “you look tired,” they murmur, brushing their thumb under your eye, soft and worried like they’re tracing shadows off your skin.

✭ lying on the couch, you drifting off, and them adjusting the pillow under your head with the kind of care that makes you feel fragile in the best possible way.
