Do you think the reason Lydia has never brought up her feelings for Stiles to anyone or never really reflected on them is because she might be afraid of falling in love with him? Being the kind of girl Lydia is, she's always so confident and always goes after what she wants (especially guys she likes, I mean look at how she's going after Parrish) but when it comes to stiles, she becomes almost shy and doesn't want to admit any feelings she might have for him (1/2)
(2/2 same anon) and I use to think this would stem from her ego as the popular girl and him being a nerd etc. and maybe thatâs how it was AT FIRST but now you can see its a lot deeper than that. Lydia has lost so many people in her life, including boyfriends she cared about, and Stiles has been shown to be arguably the most important person in her life right now, so I can imagine her not wanting to risk being with him out of fear of losing him (if that makes sense)?
Iâve always thought that Lydia has a very complex psychology when it comes to the romantic department. Like you said weâve seen her being confident and not afraid of going after what she wants (scott/aiden) but when it comes to stiles her attitude is completely different. Sheâs not forward, she doesnât flirt mercilessly and never has with him. She gives him small smiles, heart eyes, and many times weâve seen her surprised at her own reaction when it comes to him. Iâve thought about it in the past and in my opinion sheâs afraid of him. Afraid of what he could make her feel. Let me explain this.
Her only real relationship has been with Jackson, a guy who never treated her right, took her for granted, was abusive towards her, never bothered to get to know the real her and then ended up leaving. It has been clear that she has abandonment issues because we also now that her parents got divorced and we havenât seen her dad since s01. On top of that, I canât imagine her parents being a healthy relationship role model for her, since we got one scene with them and they were constantly fighting which means the exact same thing was happening at home. So Lydia went to school everyday pretending to be this conveniently dumb and hot it girl, who wouldnât make Jackson or any other guy feel threatened, and was in a relationship just for the social status.
And then here comes Stiles Stilinski, a guy she thought was just another nerd who wanted to sleep with her and was not worthy of her time. But in a very short amount of time he proves heâs so much more than that. He calls her out on her bs, treats her like a gentleman, tells her he knows her better than her own bf, even though sheâd never even talked to him, and lets her go look for Jackson while sheâs his date, because he knows thatâs what she wants. And suddenly heâs on her radar. You can see the evolution in their relationship and how she starts to truly like him as a person and feel comfortable around him. She starts owning up to her cleverness and being more sensitive towards others.
I could go on forever but my point is that Lydia treats Stiles differently because he is different than every other guy. She never thought it was possible for someone to care about her like that but he does, and isnât afraid to show it. Whatâs more he doesnât ask for anything in return and when she gets together with Aiden (because Jackson just left and she is scared to let someone else in, especially the guy who had never let her down) heâs still there for her. After their kiss I think she knew for sure that her feelings were more than friendly but she didnât have the guts to confront them. She did like Aiden, and with him it was easier, because when he let her down she expected it. Stiles was a risk, because she knew that she could really feel things for him but in her experience that never ended well. So she didnât wanna lose him.
Then of course Allison died, as well as Aiden, and she wasnât ready for a relationship. At the same time Stiles was with Malia and despite her jealousy she decided to hide her feelings more than ever. But she knew. Insert Parrish, hot nice guy who seems interested in her and she has someone to pay attention to again. But you can see itâs not the same. Sure she cares about his well being cause sheâs a caring person and thinks heâs a good guy, but she doesnât love him. And I think in 5x16 itâs pretty damn obvious that sheâs very much in love with the person who saved her, in many ways, and never stopped putting her first when no one else did. So all we need now is for her to learn that st/alia called it quits and tell him the truth.
Sorry this is so long but I had a lot of feels!
