ALL ALONG - CHAPTER 6
Chapter 6: Everything in its Right Place
WC: 2.8k
Like every time you wake up, there is a brief moment of bliss. A moment when your brain is still powering up. A moment where you don't have any worries, responsibilities, or questions. Just pure nothing - a blank slate.
But as soon as your brain remembers who you are and where you are - the short-lived tranquility is over.
The pounding in your head beat along with your heart rate - hard, continual, and quick. Your hand reached to cradle your head, as if the touch of your fingers could heal the headache.
Your heart ached as well from the giant hole that was ripped in it last night. The hole only got bigger when you felt a pillow pressed against your back - another barrier Ellie had put up.
"Asshole" you murmured under your breath as you laid back down facing her. You acted on your urge to stare at her, simply unable to help yourself. Her chest rose and fell as she took breaths through her slightly parted pink lips that, just hours earlier, were pressed against yours. You stared at each freckle paining her skin like a constellation. You stared at the strand of hair that gently laid across her skin and reached your hand out to push it aside, but pulled it back to rest at your side.
"Fucking asshole" you repeated again softly as you felt the hole in your heart tear with every second you spent staring at her.
You decided it wouldn't do you much good to lie there and stare any longer, and being productive would get your mind off things. Carefully, as to not disturb Ellie, you climbed out of bed, making sure to avoid the broken glass on the floor.
After getting a glass of water that your body was screaming for, you crouched down beside the bed and started picking up each shard of the broken bottle. With each sharp piece that your fingers picked up, your mind was filled with memories of last night. How when you were kissing her it felt so right. Like everything made sense. And then in the next, it was like that feeling never even existed.
"Ah fuck" you cursed as the last shard nicked your hand, causing you to drop it on the ground with a clatter
"Huh" Ellie grumbled as she shot up in bed and looked around. When she caught sight of you holding your injured hand in your other, and blood drip down your wrist, she immediately ran over to your side
"What happened?" she asked as her brows creased together and she extended her hands to grasp yours
You pulled your hands away from her and to your chest and backed away to the sink to run cool water over your cut
"Nothing, I just cut my hand" you shot out coldly. If she wanted to put up walls, you weren't gonna be the one to knock them down.
"Well, let me get you a bandaid or-"
"I'm fine, Ellie"
"Okayy then" she trailed. Even though you weren't facing her, you could just imagine the eye roll that went along with her words.
Typically, you wouldn't think twice about changing in front of Ellie. But now, you knew doing that would cross whatever invisible line drawn. So after you cleaned off your hand and taped it up, you grabbed your clothes and changed in the cramped confines of the bathroom, cursing everytime your elbow rammed into the wall.
When you came out, Ellie was just finishing getting changed. While she faced the wall, you stood in the doorway watching her back muscles twist and flex as she reached overhead to slip her sports bra on, and then again when she threw her top on.
You only noticed you were biting your lip when she started to turn around, and you had to fix your face back to neutral.
"Ready?" you hummed impatiently as you grabbed your bag, already putting one foot out the door
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The trip to the warehouse was uneventful to say the least. No infected and no talking from either you or Ellie - only gathering as many pills, masks, and equipment as you could carry. The bare fucking minimum of communication that could be spent on a patrol.
The silence stretched over your journey to the next checkpoint. And the next. And the next. You or Ellie, depending on who was more stubborn that day, would sleep on the floor or the couch in the old cabins. The only words uttered revolved around the plans of the day, who's sleeping where, and an occasional polite goodnight.
Even though you weren't exactly speaking, you didn't want this trip to end. You despied the idea of going back to an empty house and filling your days with bullshit to distract yourself from the pit of loneliness you felt when you were not busy. At least now, Ellie was in your presence. At home, that wasn't guaranteed, and getting time with her would be a feat in itself.
You didn't want to go back to that. You couldn't handle doing it again. You had one more night left until you were back inside the four walls of your town, and you were determined to get to the bottom of whatever this was - no matter if it was good or bad.
As you laid out on the couch, while Ellie was busy reorganizing her bag, you uttered the first real sentence you had in a while."I have one more joint left"
"Good for you?" she huffed sarcastically as she was scrounging around in her bag for something
"I'm offering to share it," you redirected with a huff
"Oh - okay," she agreed quickly, like she didn't even need to think about it.
With that, you jumped off the couch and grabbed the last joint and your lighter from your bag before sitting back down.
You thought the joint would help break the ice and be a way for your conversations to turn normal. But after the joint was passed back and forth, and neither of you spoke you knew that wouldn't be the case.
You were utterly exhausted from trying to pry information, or really anything, out of Ellie. All of your attempts were futile and only made you more confused. So, you decided you wouldn't try anymore.
When the joint was dead and gone, you hauled yourself off to bed. The weed didn't do the job you hoped it would - putting your mind and body in a state of relaxation. Instead, you were overcome with the thought that things would be like this forever. You pulled the blanket to cover your face to try and muffle the cries that came out of you.
The next morning was like the rest - dull, quiet, and routine. It was like you were stuck in a loop, repeating the same dialogue and actions. Like clockwork, after you finished getting ready, eating, and cleaning up the place, you both mounted your horses and started on for Jackson town.
The whole ride, all you wanted was to hear one of Ellie's stupid puns. Hell, you would even settle for a snarky comment about how much you overpacked. But again - fucking radio silence.
As timid as you were about returning to Jackson, as soon as you saw its gates on the horizon, a small sense of relief washed over you. You tapped Rainbow with your leg and rushed to the gates, not wanting to stand another second listening to the sound of yourself breathing.
You finally felt like a real person again when you heard the sound of Maria's voice and the chatter of people tending to the stable.
"Finally!" a voice shrieked from behind you
when you turned, you saw Dina and Jesse in the distance, making their way towards you. While Jesse went to greet Ellie, Dina strided over to you.
"Oh my god, please never leave again," she rushed as she pulled you in for a hug "How was it, tell me everything"
You let out a dry chuckle as you finished tying Rainbow up. "Really not much to say"
"Oh that cannot be true" she protested "tell me everything over drinks" she smirked
"Okay, deal" you agreed as you smiled back.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
As you filled Dina in on everything that happened, or lack thereof, you nursed a glass of whiskey. And another, and another. Once you had finished, you were properly drunk, which helped ease the pain of going back to your empty house.
"I seriously do not know what is wrong with her," Dina rattled on as the alcohol hit her system "Do you want me to talk to her? I'm gonna go talk to her"
When Dina started to stand up, you pulled her back down with a laugh "No - no. Please don't"
With a grumble, she agreed and took another sip "Fine - but stay over at mine tonight? I haven't seen you in like a month and I'm going through withdrawal"
"Okayyy" you agreed without a doubt of hesitation. At least tonight you wouldn't be alone.
"I'll meet you outside, I just need the bathroom" Dina mumbled as she got up
You nodded and made your way outside. You leaned against the wall to support yourself and dug in your pocket for a cigarette.
"Hey" a voice spoke, making you jerk your head up. Kat.
"Uh, hi" you stuttered as you readjusted yourself and faced the girl that was now standing in front of you
"So you're with Ellie now?" she questioned with a sharp bite
"What?" you laughed "What are you talking about?"
"Don't play dumb - I know you went on that trip together"
"The patrol? What, that makes us together?" you continued laughing as you lit your cigarette
"Wait - you and Ellie aren't..." she trailed as her face dropped
"No" you shook your head with a confused look plastered across her face "what gave you that idea?"
"Nothing - forget it. I shouldn't have said anything I'm sorry" she blurted out as her face was flushed with red
"No - seriously. Why would you say that?"
"Ellie just made it seem like she was into you - that's all. I didn't mean to make assumptions"
"How?" you pressed
"Nothing, really. Just a feeling I had. When we broke up, she said something about loving someone else, and I thought that was you. But I was obviously mistaken"
"Yeah, no. We're not anything." you shook your head as you ashed your cigarette. You saw Dina exiting the bar and went to join her, offering Kat a small smile as you left.
As you walked to Dina's house, you had completely sobered up. The warmth in your veins had run cold - it felt like your blood wasn't moving at all. You couldn't focus on what Dina was drunkenly rambling on about - your mind was once again consumed with Ellie.
"I think I might wanna sleep in my own bed tonight," you said as you stopped in Dina's doorway.
"Oh yeah - makes sense." Dina shrugged as she lazily slid off her boots "I can walk you home"
"No, it's like a block away" you waved her off "I'll see you tomorrow?"
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The only thing you could think of to fix the way you felt was to flee. Your whole life in Jackson practically revolved around Ellie since the moment you set foot in it. You didn't know what to make of anything - what Kat said, what happened on the trip - anything. The only way to get a clear head was to be away - from Ellie and this town.
So, the second you stepped foot in your house, you started to pack. You threw your gear back into your backpack, haphazardly sorted through your drawers and tossed in whatever clothes you thougt you might need, and placed whatever you could fit from your cupboard into your pack.
You stared at the Walkman and hoodie lying on your bed. It was taunting you. Before you could give it any more thought, you picked them up and threw them in the garbage can.
You took one last look around your house, not knowing when, or even if, you would be back. Before you let your tears arrive, or any hesitation to take hold, you nodded to yourself and turned on your heel to the front door.
With a quick pull, your door was open.
"Ellie?" you muttered as you placed your hand over your chest in surpise. Of course, her she was pacing on your front porch "What do you want?"
"Are you leaving?" she asked, her face scrunched together as she noted your backpack
"Yes - it doesn't matter. Why are you here?" you huffed impatiently
"Are you coming back?" she asked again as she shifted her weight between her feet
"Don't know," you shrugged as you started to walk down your front steps, not really wanting to engage in her avoidance tactics any longer
"Wait, wait - don't leave," she rushed out as she followed behind you
You paused your steps and turned around rasing your brows at her. "Look, I gotta get going so if you wanna say something, just say it"
Ellie opened her mouth and closed it, putting her lips together in a tight line. When she opened it again, nothing came out.
You let out a cold laugh. "Look, I'm not doing this anymore. I can't," you huffed in frustration as you turned back around and started walking again.
You heard something being mumbled behind you, but you didn't bother to slow down. It was only when she screamed it that you stopped.
"I love you"
It took you a second to comprehend the words. I love you. I love you. But when you did, you don't know what came over you. You marched back over to her. Your breath was coming in uneven peaks and your heart was beating out of your chest. You could feelt your nails digging into your palms from how hard they were clenched.
"What did you say?"
"I said I love you, okay?" she repeated as her hand found the back of her neck
Without thinking, your hand raised from your side and smacked the side of her face - not too hard, but hard enough to make her cup it with her hands.
"Fuck - I don't know why I did that, I'm sorry" you rushed as your hands covered your mouth
"No - no, it's okay. I deserve it" she shook her head "I'll just take that as my cue to leave"
"Don't. Come inside. I'll get you some ice" you urged as you guided her into your house
As Ellie took a seat on the couch you ran to your freezer to grab a bag of ice. As you offered it to her you took a seat next to her.
"Thanks"
"Yeah - I'm sorry again," you offered as you winced at the memory
"Really it's fine. I was sort of expecting something like that" she shrugged as she held the cold pack to her face
"Why would you expect that?"
"I guess I just had a feeling you didn't feel the same and would get weirded out or pissed or whatever"
"Are you serious?" you huffed out with a light laugh "Ellie - I. I'm not weirded out or pissed that you love me. I'm mad that it took you this fucking long to say it. I've been wanting you to say it for months."
"What?" Her eyebrows raised as she dropped the ice, setting it on the couch
"Jesus, you're fucking blind" you laughed as you scooted closer to her "I love you too. I have for a while"
"Why didn't you say anything!"
"When would I? Should I have said it when you weren't taking to me or when you were cozied up with Kat?"
"Shit, right"
"So this whole time, you were avoiding me because you felt this way about me?" you pressed
"Yeah - figured if I stayed away, it would go away. I didn't want to ruin our friendship or anything, but I sorta did that anyway with it"
"I just wish you would've told me sooner. Could've avoided all of this" you chuckled softly
"Yeah, me too" she agreed. After a brief pause, she looked back at you "Why are you leaving?"
"I just couldn't stand the silence anymore. I needed to clear my head"
"Are you still leaving?" she asked reluctantly
You feigned thought as you looked up at the ceiling. "Depends. Are you gonna keep avoiding me?"
"No" she said quickly
"Good," you smirked. "Now don't you have something you want to ask me?"
"Oh shit, yeah," she smiled "One second"
You watched as Ellie reached into her bag and pulled out a VHS, a blanket, and a bowl of popcorn.
"I brought these over thinking we could have a re-do of the tradition I fucked up, and I would love to do the tradition with you as my girlfriend?" she finally asked, with that dumb fucking smile she wears so well.
"I would love to be your girlfriend," you smiled as you reached your hands to cup her face and pulled her in for a kiss.

ALL ALONG - CHAPTER 5
Chapter Five: Hearing Damage
WC: 4.1k
You screamed into your pillow, a routine you had taken up in the last couple of weeks since that night at the Tipsy Bison. The mounting frustration of it all coming to a head every night. You listened as your screams reverberated from your feather-filled pillow into your ears. Once you had screamed until your throat was raw, you opted for your cassette tapes and earbuds to drown out your mind's noise.
Nirvana it was tonight. Thankfully, the angst, rage, and sorrow of Kurt Cobain calmed your mind as you spread out on the couch, eventually dozing off with guitar melodies and a raspy voice in your ear.
You woke up halfway through the night to the earbud wire wrapped loosely around your neck, drool covering your cheek, and your jeans uncomfortably sitting in all the wrong places.
In a half-asleep daze, you threw your Walkman somewhere on the floor and stripped naked in an attempt to get more comfortable. After tossing and turning on the couch for a little while to no avail, you figured it was useless to try and fall back asleep now. You threw on a hoodie you had lying in your clean clothes pile, a fresh pair of underwear, and fuzzy socks. You dug through your junk drawer, praying you'd find a loose cigarette somewhere in the mess. And lucky for you, you did.
You palmed the cigarette, grabbed your lighter, and headed straight for your front porch, making sure to turn the porch light on beforehand. It was still chilly at night, given spring had only started a little bit ago, but it was bearable - nowhere near the sub-zero temperatures the winter months had to offer.
You smoked until there was nothing left but ash and a bitter taste in your mouth. You stayed on your front porch for a little longer, listening to the crickets and rustling of the wind, but headed inside once your teeth started to chatter incessantly.
The warmth of your house greeted you, and your bed called your name like a siren song. You adjusted the hood of your sweatshirt, and in the dim moonlight shining through your window, only then had you realized it was Ellie's hoodie - the one you had 'borrowed' some months ago. Given how pissed you were at her, you figurued you should take it off. But, the soft fabric that still smelled like her clung to you like a second skin. You wrapped yourself in it further as you crawled under your plush comforter - now there was no tossing and turning, just sleep.

"Jesus Christ," you mumbled as you heard knocking on your door. It was times like these when you really despised the lack of phones.
"Hold on," you shouted out, your voice still filled with sleep. You threw on a pair of sweatpants and hastily walked over to the door, rubbing your eyes as you opened it
"Christ, it's like six in the mornin'," you murmured before you realized who was standing before you
"Good morning to you too," Maria chuckled "Rough night?"
"Shit, sorry Maria - thought you were Dina or Jesse," you apologized
"No worries, I know you weren't expecting me"
"Here, come in - sorry it's a mess," you said as you held the door open for her and became increasingly embarrassed about the state of your house
You offered the couch for Maria to sit on, but she opted to stand, saying she wouldn't be too long.
"So, how did you like the run with Peter?" Maria questioned
"It was good - yeah, I really liked it," you smiled
"Good - would you feel comfortable leading it with someone else? Half the town's sick with the flu, including Peter, and the town is low on supplies already," Maria explained
"Oh wow, I mean, I guess I could. It was pretty easy last time," you figured as you thought it out
"I'm glad to hear that," Maria smiled as a relieved look washed over her face "Now, is there someone you wanted to bring with? Maybe Dina, Jesse, Ellie?"
"Dina" you responded quickly, sounding like the obvious choice out of all of them
"Great. I'll head over to her right now. Can you be ready to go in an hour?" she questioned as she started heading for the door
"No problem," you nodded as you grabbed the door for her, escorting her out.

You walked over to the stables with your backpack, which was filled to the brim, feeling like a hundred pounds on your back, your trusty boots on your feet, and your cargo jacket keeping the warmth from your home pressed against you.
You breathed out and watched your breath fog in the air from the morning cold. As you got closer to the stables, you saw Rainbow already out and ready for you.
"Hi girl" you cooed as you petted her gently "Ready to roll?"
"There you are!" Maria shouted from across the stable before waltzing over to you happily. How this woman had so much energy in the morning was beyond you.
"Here I am" you said with a laugh "Is Dina here?"
"Slight change in plans. Dina and Jesse have the flu" she frowned
"Shit" you sighed "Solo then?"
"Oh hell no" Maria laughed "Don't get ahead of yourself young lady. Luckily Ellie is not sick and happily agreed to tag along, isn't that nice!" she said as she clasped her hands together.
Just your fucking luck.
"I really think I'd be okay by myself," you refuted
"Oh, don't be silly - don't you want your best friend with you?"
All you could do was nod slowly and smile as fakely as you could, reluctantly agreeing.
Out of the corner of your eye, and right on cue, you saw Ellie waltz up and grab Shimmer from the stables. You waited, impatiently, as she prepped Shimmer and walked her out to the front of the gate.
"Alright, you girls be safe out there," Maria called out as you mounted Rainbow.
"Will do" you replied back, taking the reigns in your hand and tapping Shimmer to get her moving.
As soon as the gates opened, you were off, not bothering to give Ellie a chance to ride next to you. You wanted to prolong any sort of interaction you had with her until it was necessary. Giving you had to be together for weeks, you knew you had to talk to her eventually, but for now, you were more than comfortable not opening your mouth.
You rode for a while, watching the sunrise above the horizon and settle in its place in the sky. For a while, you could ignore Ellie's presence, as long as you didn't focus in on the sound of her riding getting closer to you every so often or the heavy sighs she would let out occasionally. A couple hours in you really couldn't ignore her - especially when she broke the silence
"I know you were expecting Dina to come with you" she shouted out, still a ways behind you "but you're stuck with me"
A couple minutes later, she tried again.
"Are you sure you know where you're going?"
Silence from you again, which only made her try harder to get something out of you
"I know you're pissed at me, but you're gonna have to talk to me eventually!" She yelled
"Not gonna happen!" you shouted back as you tapped Rainbow and started galloping faster
"Ha! See, knew you would fuckin talk" Ellie gloated smugly as she kicked Shimmer into a running pace as well, trying to catch up to you
Fuck" You cursed under your breath, realizing you unintentionally responded to her. Old habit you guessed. You wiped the small smile that appeared on your face from her comment.
In enough time, you were approaching the first stopping point- just in time before the sun fully set.
You brought rainbow to a halt as you approached the wooden log cabin, carefully getting off and tying Rainbow up. Ellie followed behind you, just a few seconds off.
"This is nicer than my house" she said as she glanced around looking at the wooden structure
"a lot of places are nicer that your garage" is what you wanted to say, but stopped yourself. Instead, you started your way inside, grabbing the key from a hidden compartment in the wood and unlocking the front door.
"Don't we need to clear it?" Ellie asked as she pulled out her gun
"No - it's been locked," you retorted
"Locked doesn't mean shit; we should clear it" she persisted
"Be my fucking guest" you said as you set your pack down and slumped over on the couch
Ellie, stubborn as always, carefully tiptoed around the house, clearing room after room. Once she was done and found nothing, she set her pack down and sat on the chair opposite you.
"It's clear," she conceded
"Shocker," you mouthed off, grabbing a can of food from your bag and digging in immediately, given you hadn't gotten a chance to eat all day
"What're you eating?" Ellie asked, flipping the last syllable an octave higher
You shot her a look as you took a bite, going back to your silent streak. Were you being childish? yes. Did it feel good to have Ellie try so hard? Also yes.
"Fine, don't tell me," she sighed dramatically, "but if you don't talk to me then you don't get any of the weed I brought"
That made your ears perk up.
"You're bribing me to talk to you now?" you said after swallowing your last bite
"Nope, not a bribe. But if you want weed..." she trailed as she dangled a joint from her fingers
"Good thing I brought my own," you smirked as you pulled out your own joint
"Fucking hell," she cursed under her breath, but loud enough for you to hear "Put that shit down. Save it for later. You can smoke this and not talk if that's what you want"
You smugly smiled, feeling as if you had won at your own game, and tucked your joint back into your bag. Ellie pulled out a lighter and lit the joint, taking a deep inhale. You tried not to focus on the way her lips curled around the paper, or the way her fingers looked as she held it.
She extended her hand across the coffee table in between you, passing you the joint. You took it with no hesitation and took two long puffs, desperately searching for some kind of relief from the substance.
You passed the joint back and forth, both without uttering a word. When the joint was gone, there was really nothing else for you to do but sleep. You pulled out a blanket and pillow from a storage container next to the couch and made up your bed on the cushions.
"Is there not a bed here?" Ellie asked as she saw you lay down on the sofa
"There is, it's in the other room," you murmured as you adjusted your pillow, fluffing out the stiff fabric
"Then why are you sleeping on the couch?" she pressed
"I like the couch. You can take the bed." As soon as you said it, you immediately regretted it. The hard cushions of the couch stabbed your back as if you were sleeping on concrete. But, you were stubborn and wanted to make a point, even though you weren't sure what point you were making exactly.
"If you say so," Ellie trailed as she picked up her bag and headed towards the room. "Uh, goodnight then"
"Mhm" you hummed back as you readjusted yourself yet again, trying to get comfortable.
"shit" you grumbled as you tossed yourself back down on the sofa. You weren't sure of the time, but it felt like you had been tossing and turning for hours just trying to get comfortable enough to fall asleep. You knew you needed sleep - your body craved it after the day of traveling and you needed it to be a functional person tomorrow.
You tossed your pillow and blanket onto the floor, making a makeshift bed on the ground. When you laid your body down on the hard surface, you really debated on just sucking it up and getting into the bed. Nope, not an option - you were too proud for that.
Instead, you pulled out your Walkman and let your music fill your ears, giving you enough of a distraction from the way every bone of your body pressed against the floor for you to fall asleep.
When you woke up the next morning, every part of your body ached. You swore you could feel bruises forming where your body met the hard ground.
You blinked your eyes open when you heard Ellie stir from the bedroom, walking out into the living room with a yawn. She looked rested as ever.
"Holy fuck" Ellie spat out with a deep laugh when she caught sight of you on the ground in your heap of blankets "why the hell are you on the floor"
You shot her an annoyed look, topping it off with an eyeroll as you sat up and gathered the blankets.
"God you're fuckin stubborn" she rasped as she ran her hand through her hair "could've just slept in the damn bed"
"Shut up" you grumbled out as you tried to stretch your body "get ready we're already behind schedule"
"Yes ma'am" Ellie said matched with a sarcastic salute
You dug through your bag for a change of clothes and your hairbrush. You were frankly still half asleep and grumpy, so you didn't feel like carrying your shit into the other room to change. So, you lifted off your shirt and slipped down your pants, leaving yourself in just your underwear.
You heard Ellie clear her throat and shuffle into the bedroom to get changed herself before you fitted yourself up in your fresh clothes - new pair of jeans, long-sleeve shirt, and your cargo jacket.
Ellie emerged from the room wearing a similar get up - jeans, cargo jacket, and her converse. You noticed a slight blush across her cheeks and a glisten of sweat on her forehead, which made your head tilt with curiosity.
"Ready?" you questioned as you hoisted your backpack on your back
"Yeah" Ellie choked out as she nodded along, her hand flying to the back of her neck
When you got on your horses, you explained the plan for the day, which mainly consisted of riding along all day until you got to your next checkpoint. You let Ellie know that there was a spot you'd pass with some infected, but nothing crazy.
The next couple of days were the same. Riding in silence, killing stray infected, locking up in the checkpoints at night, and then tossing and turning until you did it all over again.
It drove you fucking crazy. All of it, but especially the silence. You wanted to keep up your silent streak because you were still pissed at her for everything, but a part of you wished she would jut in with her snarky comments trying to make you talk. You wished none of this had happened in the first place - how different this trip would be if things didn't change. You weren't sure how much longer you could keep your act up before you became a zombie yourself.
The checkpint you got to now was the last one before finally hitting the medical wearhouse. When you got there, you patrolled the perimmiter ensuring that it was all clear. When it was, you tied up Rainbow and Shimmer and made your way into the cabin. This cabin was smaller than the one's you had been staying in - only one room fitted out with a singular bed, a table, and a furnace. You thought back on when you and Peter stayed here and cringed when you rememerd you did not sleep a wink from his loud ass snoring that echoed off all four walls.
Once you got settled in, the sun was just beginning to set - meaning you had quite some time to kill before sleeping. Even though it was only a week or so in, the boredom was starting to eat you alive. At least on other patrols you would have action that would keep you on your toes and tire you out. But just riding all day, coming to checkpoints at night, and having no conversation whatsoever - it was dull.
You looked around the cabin, trying to find anything to do. You toyed with the comforter on the bed, adjusted the flickering lightbulb, and stoked the wood in the furnace. Your eye caught on a small cabinet next to the furnace. You peeled open the door and inside - about three bottles of liquor. Score.
Not being able to take it anymore, you broke the ice. You pulled out a bottle and cleared your throat to get Ellie's attention. "Wanna get drunk?"
"Fuck yeah" she rasped as she set her bag down and took a seat on the bed.
With the bottle in hand you took a seat on the bed, sitting opposite of Ellie. You unscrewed the bottle and took the first sip, before passing it along to Ellie.
"You gonna talk to me yet?" Ellie teased as she grimaced from the burn of the clear alocohol
"Maybe. Still deciding" you quipped as you took another sip, trying to get drunk as quick as possible
"Honestly impressed you lasted this long. Must be a big grudge you have" she stated mimicking your actions of sipping and passing back and forth
"Yeah, well" you shrugged
"We could do a drinking game. Makes it less sad then drinking like this" she suggested as she gestured to the bottle now being passed back to you
"What game?"
"I don't know" she said, feigning thought "truth or dare?"
"Seriosuly?" you laughed, to which she raised her brows at you, like a challange "fine, let's do it. You first"
Alright, lemme think" she said as she searched her brain for a question " okay, truth or dare?"
"Dare" you stated
"I dare you to...do a handstand" she said
"Lame" you teased as you got up from the bed and did a handstand in the small space next to the bed, not drunk enough yet to fall on your face from it
"Alright" you sighed as you got back on the bed "truth or dare, Ellie?"
"Truth"
You knew this was your opportunity to make her talk - force her to say whatever she couldn't before. You didn't wanna jump right in though.
"Who's your least favorite person to patrol with?" you asked, dipping your toes in the water
"Easy - Jesse. He won't let me get sidetracked and is no fun," she answered confidently "Truth or dare?"
"Truth" you said as you took a sip of alcohol
"Worst person you've ever slept with" she said point blank - she was going straight in for it.
You choked on the liquid "Jesus, really?"
"What, I'm curious," she shrugged "If you don't wanna answer, you can take a shot"
"That guy Henry - because he was a man" you said with a wince, recalling the memory of your first, and only time, sleeping with a man.
"God, ew I forgot about that - gimmie that" she said as she grabbed the bottle from your hands and took a drink
After a couple more rounds of 'tame' questions and lame dares, you both were finally drunk enough to do or say whatever.
"Okay, okay - serious one Ellie," you chuckled, your words fighting to come out through your fit of laughter. "Why'd you and Kat break up?"
"Oh god" she groaned as she tipped her head back "because she sucked, okay? She's not who I want"
"Oh! So there's someone you wanna be with?" you perked up
"I didn't say that," she groaned again, her face flushed from either embarrassment or alcohol "and that's against the rules. One question per turn. And from now on it's only truths, I can't think of more dares"
"Fine" you dramatically sighed as you flopped on the bed, only slightly slurring your words
"Is there someone you wanna be with?" Ellie asked
Without hesitation, you grabbed the bottle and took a shot - you were drunk, but sober enough to know you did not wanna answer that question "My turn" you muttered, immediatly changing the subject as to not give Ellie a chance to dig any deeper
"Pussy" she teased
"Whatever," you quipped as you rolled your eyes "Why were you avoiding me?"
Ellie went to grab the bottle, but you held it tight in your hand and moved your arm so it was just out of her grasp. She clumsily tried to reach for it, swatting at your arm to try and get the bottle
"Oops, looks like you're gonna have to answer," you teased in a sing-songy voice, still dangling the bottle in your hand
"Gimmie the bottle" Ellie huffed as she tried to reach for it again, lifting herself to give herself a better angle
"Nope!" you slurred as you repositioned yourself against her attempts.
But Ellie was not giving up. She moved quicker than you could react. In one second she was in front of you with her arm out in front, reaching for the liquor, and in the next the bottle had slipped from your hand and landed on the floor with a shatter. When you came back to your senses, you realized the position you and Ellie had ended up in - you had never been this close to her in your life. Her arms rested just on either side of your head and her lips were only inches away from yours. You felt her thighs pressed against the outside of your hips - you so badly just wanted to lift your hips up to feel her against you.
Heavy breaths left your lips as you stared up at Ellie's face, her green eyes looking back at your eyes, and then down to your lips. You ignored your inner voice screaming at you to stop - to get up and act like this wasn't happening. But you didn't have the willpower and frankly didn't want to stop.
You felt like you were in slow motion when you looked down at her lips- the ones with the scar etched across the top that you had been longing to feel for so long - and then back up at her eyes. In the next second, you wrapped your hands in her auburn hair and pulled her in, connecting your lips.
Ellie, and you, both let out a whimper at the contact - the sound getting eaten by one another. Ellie's hands slid up to the side of your face, pulling you closer, if that was even possible. The kiss was sloppy, tongue and teeth mashing together- it sent electric currents through your body.
You raised your hips, grinding into her and grasping at anything you could - her hair, her neck, her back.
You pulled back for a second to breath and a small moan left you when she took the opportunity to paint kisses on your exposed neck, leaving you absolute wrecked from barely anything.
But as quickly as it started, it stopped. Ellie detached herself from your neck abruptly and shimmied off of you
" What's wrong?" you questioned as you sat up
"Nothing, sorry - we just, shouldn't have done that"
"Oh" you choked out as you felt a lump form in your throat "i'm sorry, I didn't mean-"
"No don't be, it's fine - we're drunk and it doesn't mean anything. Let's just pretend it didn't happen" she interjected
You wanted to tell her it meant something. It meant everything to you. It did happen. Even if you both were drunk, it didn't feel like a mistake.
But instead, you merely just agreed, biting your tongue and forcing your words down.
"we should get some sleep" she muttered as she laid down and turned on her side, not giving you room to disagree
You laid down and stared at the ceiling, trying to get a grasp of everything that happened in the last ten minutes. But that was a puzzle that couldn't be solved in one night.

ALL ALONG - CHAPTER FOUR
Chapter Four - Heart-Shaped Box
WC: 3.3k
At first, you spent the days replaying the conversation with Ellie over and over in your head - each time remembering a new detail. You searched for answers in your memory - any answer as to why she was being so cold, why she could barely look you in the eye, how she so easily could say those things to you, and not say the words you so desperately wanted to hear. It was pathetic how much you thought about it, to be honest. But it was all you had left. The good memories shifted to the back burner, and the bad ones prevailed at the forefront.
The days shifted to weeks as fall bled into winter. The leaves decayed on the ground as thick layers of snow piled over them, burying them until spring, when they would be uncovered by the creeping sun in a head of mud.
You hated winter. Absolutely despised it. The cold, the snow, the gray cast over the sky - you dreaded every time it came around. And in Jackson, winter lasted forever. It felt like it would be years until you saw the sun again, until you could feel the warmth of the sun on your skin.
You sank into that hatred. You welcomed it like you welcomed every depressive thought you had. You had become someone you didn't even recognize, and you hated yourself for it. You didn't realize how much power Ellie had over you no longer had the ability to be hypnotized by it.
You spent your days finishing out your obligations, like whichever duty you were assigned to or household chores, and then sank back into the comfort of your depression - wrapping yourself up in your comforter, drinking the liquor you were saving for a special time you never designated, and smoking weed that Dina would drop off for you.
You tried to journal to help express your emotions, but you found it redundant. The thoughts were already in your head, and writing them down didn't seem to help. Plus, the pages were littered with Ellie's name, and seeing it written down made it all seem more real, even though it was real enough in your head.
While you were content, wrapped up in a cocoon of blankets on your bed watching the snowfall on your window, you heard a knock on your door.
"Fucking shit," you grumbled to yourself as you tried to untangle yourself from the web you had created in your bed, stumbling when a blanket trapped your foot and you stumbled. You kept one blanket wrapped around you as you moped to the door, not bothering to fix your appearance, and opened the door with a creak
"Hey Dina," you rasped as you cocked your head at her, signaling for her to come inside
"Got your weed," she said as she pulled out a mason jar containing a couple of joints and waved it around
"Thanks, you can put them wherever," you mumbled as you started back towards your room
"Wait - wanna hang out for a little?" she asked with cautious eyes, like she was walking on eggshells around you
"Sure" you shrugged as you redirected yourself to the couch "What's up?"
"Listen, I'm worried about you. Jesse too," Dina admitted as the same cautious stare devoured her eyes
A wave of shame crept over you. You didn't want people to feel worried about you. You felt guilty.
"Please, don't worry about me. I'll be fine," you tried to assure, but your tone gave you away
"Look, I have no idea why Ellie did what she did - Jesse and I cornered her, and she got super evasive - and I know it fucking sucks, but babe, do you think there's another reason you're feeling so sad about it?" Dina rambled.
"Another reason? What do you mean?" you said with a hint of a scoff and a laugh that came out more bitter than you wanted
"I mean - do you think you maybe like her as more than a friend?" she whispered out, like it was a secret
"What? No, no," you exclaimed as you perked up in your seat and shook your head. "I'm sad because my best friend fucking ditched me out of nowhere and for no fucking reason!"
"Okay, okay. I was just checking"
"Does it seem like I do?" you pressed. "Did Ellie think I did?"
"No - I mean she never said anything or made it seem like that. I just - the way you talk about her. You talk about her like you love her. In more than a friend way"
You buried your head in your hands and rubbed your eyes with your palms, accepting the reality that yeah, maybe your fantasies about her meant something. "I don't know. Fuck. Maybe I do"
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Dina cooed as she placed a supportive hand on your shoulder
"I mean, this past year I'd find myself thinking about her more often and in ways I hadn't really before. But then the more I think about it, I feel like I always had those thoughts and just pushed them away or ignored them"
"Oh, babe," Dina said as her eyebrows furrowed together, "it's okay"
She pulled you in for a hug, which you graciously accepted. You cried into her shoulder for a brief minute before composing yourself and pulling away with a sniffle.
"Do you see her a lot?" you asked with curiosity
"Not really," Dina shrugged "Every now and then, but you know how she is with Kat"
You winced at the sound of the girl's name.
"Shit sorry," Dina quickly offered
" 's fine" you chuckled, trying to ease her
"Anyways, wanna hear my plan?" Dina exclaimed, switching back into her usual chipper tone
"Hit me with it"
"We smoke a shit ton of this weed, eat all the food in your kitchen, and then - well, I didn't think that far, but we'll figure it out"
You laughed. The first real laugh you'd had in a while. "Fucking perfect"

It took you some time to really pinpoint what you felt. But after your talk with Dina, you couldn't willfully ignore your feelings. Each day it grew stronger. Each passing second left you more convinced. For the longest time, you thought you and Ellie's friendship left you feeling how a normal friendship would. But the more you thought about it, nothing about your feelings was normal. The sweaty palms you got when she would play the guitar for you. The blush that flushed your cheeks when her t-shirt rode up to expose her midriff when you were relaxing on the couch. The longing for her when you were alone in bed, craving to be touched. Yeah, friends don't feel that for each other. But, even with this newfound self-discovery, there wasn't much you could do with it. Sure, you figured yourself out and did some psychoanalyzing, but what did it matter now? Love her from afar when she wants nothing to do with you, and has a shitty girlfriend? No.
You knew the more time you spent reeling alone in your house, the worse it would get. But also, the idea of heading into town and running into her scared you even more. Jackson was a fucking bubble - there was really no way out that wasn't putting yourself at risk of getting killed while looking for the next homestead. But there was a little loophole.

"Hi Maria," you chirped as you sat down across from the blonde woman
"Someone's looking better," she smiled softly, a rarity for her. "Now, what did you wanna talk about?"
"I want to do your supply runs to the medical facility," you said in full confidence
"Wow, really? You know that's a hefty patrol. You'd be gone for weeks in this cold"
"I know. I want to do it," you nodded affirmingly
"Well, hell. Alright then. I'll pair you with one of our med supply veterans, have them show you the ropes. Next run is scheduled for..." she paused as she pulled out her planner, "Oh. Tomorrow. Is that too soon for you?"
"Nope! I'll be ready. Thanks, Maria" you exclaimed a little too excitedly before standing up and excusing yourself.
You spent the rest of the day packing your gear and enough winter clothes and food to fill up the rest of your bag. After that was all said and done, you stopped by Dina's to let her know you'd be gone for the coming weeks - she gave you a couple joints and a plastic bottle of alcohol to 'warm you up' on your journey. Jesse was there too, and he had let you know that you'd be paired with Peter - some forty-year-old war veteran who'd done the trip a hundred times, or some shit.
When you got home that night and got relaxed in bed, for the first time in a while your mind wasn't preoccupied with the ramblings of rumination. You had something else to focus on for once, and something that not only would take up time and space in your mind, but get you away for a while, just like you needed.
Bright and early, you met Peter and Maria at the gate, who ran down the basics for you. Peter was nice enough, but he was still a middle-aged man that you'd no doubt have to get used to a little.
The first week of your journey was spent traveling, stopping in between at outposts that Peter had set up over the years and outfitted to accommodate sleeping, eating, and bathing - the necessities.
A blizzard delayed your travels for a couple of days, being forced to stay in an old cabin to ride out the storm. After it finally passed, you and Peter started for the west again, repeating the days of traveling through thick snow that clung to your skin and hair, and then freezing in an old cabin at night.
While the route was pretty quiet due to the routine traffic from the runs, there were still a few stray infected here and there that you and Peter cleared with ease.
After about two weeks, you had reached the medical supply center. It was an old, dilapidated warehouse that Peter told you used to be a storage center for some medical company. It was like a candy store for doctors inside and a hidden secret of sorts somehow. Magically, the warehouse still had a good amount of shit inside - you managed to scrounge up a decent amount of metal medical tools that looked like medieval torture devices and enough items to fill out some first aid kits. Peter focused on the meds, grabbing what he knew the town was low on.
After getting all the supplies you could carry, you headed back. Once you started trotting with Rainbow back in the direction of Jackson, you felt your chest tighten, and your breath quicken - a feeling that only got worse the closer you got. While your mind was clear on your journey out, the way back was completely different.
You fixated on coming back to Ellie's silence. You missed when you would come back home and Ellie would already be there, without even having the thought to ask. You missed the warm embrace she would give you after you went on long, overnight patrols. You missed the way she teased you about how beat up you looked or how smelly you were. You missed her, all of her. You would even settle for a verbal beatdown from her at this point so at least you could hear her voice.
No matter how hard you tried, for the rest of your journey, she was all you could focus on. A small part of you held out hope that she would be there at the gates welcoming you back after realizing what an asshole she'd been. You held out that hope until you walked through the town gate - you closed your eyes as Shimmered trotted in, not wanting to have your hope crushed until absolutely necessary.
You finally opened your eyes when you heard Maria shouting your name. You got pulled out of your trance and blinked to adjust to your surroundings. You peered around, turning over your shoulder and then back again, to see if you saw even a glimpse of auburn hair or freckled cheeks.
Your heart sank, and you felt a pit in your stomach when you realized your hope was just that -mere wishful thinking.

After a good night's rest and a real, hot shower, you started to get back in your normal groove - well, minus the depressive shit. You didn't want to be held back by yourself anymore, or keep giving yourself over to the power Ellie had on you, so you decided to ignore it. At least, that's what you were telling yourself and trying to do.
You found yourself standing outside the doors of the Tipsy Bison, preparing yourself with a deep breath before walking in. Earlier in the day, when Dina stopped by to welcome you back, you and her created a plan to meet up here late to drink and properly catch up.
"You'll be fine" you whispered to yourself as you pushed the doors open. Immediately, your senses were bombarded with the light emanating from the string lights hung on the ceiling, the sounds of folk music infiltrating your eardrums, and the overwhelming smell of whiskey filling your nostrils.
You noticed Dina and Jesse sitting at the bar with their drinks in front of them, and one already waiting for you.
"Hi" you squeaked as you sauntered over to the pair
"Look who didn't die!" Jesse teased as he welcomed you with a hug
"Oh, shut up Jesse," Dina grumbled playfully as she pushed him aside to hug you
"But for real, so glad you didn't die," Dina added
"Honestly wasn't much chance for it; it was eerily calm," you explained as you took a seat and sipped on your drink
"See, it's the elements you gotta watch out for. That cold will kill you're not careful," Jesse quipped, causing you and Dina to erupt in laughter
"Oh my god, you are such a nerd. I missed you," you cooed as you placed a friendly hand on Jesse's shoulder
" We missed you too," Jesse returned
"So how are you feeling about...being back?" Dina asked cautiously, treading carefully around the sore subject
"You know, I'm okay," you said half convincingly, "or telling myself that I am at least. Faking it till I make it or whatever," you admitted with a giggle
"I think that deserves a drink!" Dina exclaimed as she held up her glass and clinked it with yours
Jesse, Dina, and you continued to catch up over your drinks, which turned into a couple glasses of whiskey. You learned that, surprisingly, a lot happened when you were away - Dina and Jesse moved in with each other, Tommy killed a massive bloater just outside of town, "Ellie and Kat broke up"
"What?" you questioned, the words echoing in your head like you were trying to listen underwater
"Ellie and Kat broke up, bout two weeks ago," Dina repeated, this time her voice coming in more clear
"Jesus, why didn't you lead with that?" you teased "I mean not that it's surprising, but"
"Didn't wanna jump right into Ellie talk you know," Dina chuckled as she swirled her glass
"Speak of Ellie" Jesse trailed. You peered over to him with furrowed brows and followed his gaze which pointed to the doors of the bar. Right at the entrance stood Ellie, stuck in her place and her eyes wandering, searching for something.
"Did you tell her I would be here?" you whispered over to Dina
"No, I swear," she hummed back as she crossed her heart
You centered your focus on the amber liquid in your glass, suddenly finding it fascinating - you didn't want to give her the pleasure of knowing you were looking at her.
"She's coming over," Dina muttered under her breath to you as a warning.
You felt ill. Clammy and shaky, like you could pass out on the spot.
"Hey Ellie" Jesse was the first to speak
"Yeah, hey, how's it going?" Ellie muttered quickly, like she was just trying to be polite but didn't actually care
You still didn't dare look up - no, you were still preoccupied with your drink. Taking a sip and putting it back down just to look at it again.
"y/n" Ellie spoke out. "Can we talk?"
Fuckkkkk.
A deep sigh left your lips as you raised your head to look at her. This was the first time you had seen her since Halloween. And she looked, well, bad to say the least - not far off from how you looked. Her eyes drooped with dark circles, her skin was dull and not just from the lack of sun, and her lips were posed in a permanent frown.
Ideally, you wanted more time to prepare before interacting with her. You flipped between giving her the benefit of the doubt and hearing her out, or treating her like she did to you and giving the silent treatment.
"Yeah, whatever," you mumbled as you finished off the last of your drink and slammed it down on the counter.
You followed Ellie to two open chairs at the opposite end of the bar, away from everyone.
"Another please," you said to the bartender, who quickly nodded and handed you another glass of whiskey.
"I uh, went to your house a couple weeks ago. Dina told me you were doing the med run" Ellie murmured
"Mhm" you hummed. You felt awkward - an awkwardness you had never felt in front of Ellie before. Like you didn't know how to talk to her. "Why'd you go to my house?"
"To talk to you" she choked out as she averted her eyes from you
You let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Was that before or after you broke up with Kat?"
"What does that matter?" she scoffed with a dry laugh
"Because then you would just be doing what you've always done. Push me away when you're with Kat and then when you inevitably break up, you show up and remember I exist"
"It's not like that," Ellie quickly quipped as she nervously smiled
"Oh no, it's exactly like that," you spoke, raising your voice "and I'm fucking sick of you acting like it's not a big deal"
"I don't know what you want me to say," she said, matching your raised voice
"I want to know why," you started, "why you shut me out like that. Why you won't be around me. I deserve to know that"
She let her head droop over into her chest before placing her forehead in her palm "I can't tell you"
You scoffed bitterly, "Hmf, figures. You know talks like these usually go better when you actually fucking say something," you spat out as you downed the rest of your drink and pushed the stool out from beneath yourself to get up "Get over yourself, Ellie. You're a pussy"
You had never talked to anyone like that before, let alone Ellie. Part of you wanted to go back and take your words back, but it was the truth. You glanced over to Dina and Jesse on your way out of the bar and saw Jesse with his shoulders tense and Dina giving you a nervous smile and a small thumbs up. You didn't even bother to look back at Ellie.

ALL ALONG - CHAPTER THREE
Chapter Three: Wish You Were Here
WC: 5.2k
________________________________________________________________
You hadn't seen Ellie since your patrol together. Usually, you wouldn't think much of not seeing her for such a short period of time. That was the norm during the summer - you would go weeks without hearing from her when she was with Kat. But your mind couldn't help but wonder. Despite your anxieties about her absence, you figured she was either with Kat or just tired from patrol - Maria had assigned your patrols to her, so she was patrolling about every day in your absence.
Meanwhile, you were stuck at home. Alone and ruminating. You begged Maria to let you do any assignment. You even offered to do barn duty and clean up after the horses. But she insisted that you rest. So, here you were alone at home and ruminating all while your leg felt totally fine.
But one thought that kept you going was the promise of Friday. The thought of getting one night to return to normal and not have any obligation other than laughing at Ellie's shitty jokes got you through the mundane days of walking around your house like a ghost.
On Friday afternoon, you took a nice, long shower and put more attention into your looks than you usually would. You don't really know why, but I guess you just wanted to feel pretty.
You changed into some grey sweatpants, a tank top, and a zip-up hoodie to protect yourself from the chill of the night on your walk over to Ellie's (part of your tradition was alternating houses every week, and this week was Ellie's turn)
After packing away the blanket Ellie had left last week, a VHS of Poltergeist, and a couple of snacks into your bag, you were on your way over to the detached garage Ellie called home.
The walk wasn't too far. A nice perk of your little community was that you could get anywhere in a couple of minutes. You took your time on the walk, letting yourself look at the decorations people put out for the fall, even if you were in a rush to get to Ellie's and enjoy her company.
You waltzed up to her door and knocked lightly once before letting yourself in, as you usually do.
"Hey Els"
"Oh shit, hey" Ellie giggled as she sat up in bed, untethering herself from the grasp of Kat, who was practically pulling her back down into the bed
"Oh sorry - am I early?" you questioned, even though you knew it was later than the time you both had long established
"Early for what, babe?" Kat questioned Ellie as she raked her fingernails across Ellie's freckled skin.
"Uh, fuck I'm sorry, you're not early. I totally spaced," Ellie giggled out as she swatted Kat's hand away playfully, really not paying any attention to you. "Can we raincheck? Tomorrow after patrol?"
Are you fucking kidding?
"Yeah, sure" you sighed out, trying your best to put up a content front - like this didn't crush you.
"Cool" she rasped. "See you tomorrow." After she uttered those words, it was like you were a ghost in her doorway. Her full attention was on Kat. You'd be lying if you said none of this bothered you. No, you were actually pissed. Never once had you rescheduled your Friday movie nights - not even in the past when she was seeing Kat during the fall. What really broke you, though, was her lack of care - not only did she not see you when you were home-ridden and injured, she didn't even bother to ask how you were.
Getting the hint that somehow you were now intruding, you walked your ass out of there and closed the door.
You tried to put off the tears welling in your eyes, not really wanting to cry over this. It's not like it was a huge deal - plans change, you get it. But something about this felt devastating. Like you were an afterthought, completely forgotten.
When you got back to your house, you decided you wouldn't spend the night you were looking forward to crying over changed plans or wallowing in self-pity. So, you quickly dropped off your stuff and headed right back out to Jesse's house.
After a fast-paced walk, you were knocking on his door.
"You free?" you questioned quickly as he opened the door
"Yeah, Dina and I are just chilling. Come in," he said as he gestured you inside.
"Aren't you and Ellie doing movie night?" Dina questioned as you joined her on the couch. Dina even remembered and it's not her fucking tradition.
"Hmf, supposed to be" you scoffed as you took the joint that Dina so graciously pulled out and explained it all to them.
"I've never really liked Kat" Jesse admitted following your explanation "Something about her. I don't know"
"Oh, we know," Dina added, "but it's not all her fault. Ellie's the one letting her take over her life. 's not like this is the first time it's happened." she shrugged as she ashed the joint into the tray filled with gray dust.
"I can try and talk to her," Jesse offered politely, being as helpful and kind as always
"God no, you don't have to do that," you refused "It'll be like before. They'll fizzle out, and everything will be back to normal," you said, trying to convince yourself of your words.
"Well, the least I can do is give Kat shitty patrol routes" Jesse laughed as he inhaled the joint
"You already do that," Dina chimed in with a laugh, which made Jesse and you laugh as well.
"I'm scheduled for patrol with Ellie tomorrow anyways," you added when the laughter fizzled out, remembering you were finally cleared to resume your normal duties as soon as dawn hit
When the joint disappeared and the conversation died out, you decided it would be best to head back home to get a good night's sleep before getting back on your feet tomorrow.
................... ................... ................... ...................
"What?" you murmured in confusion to Jesse as he pulled you to the side of the gate that guarded Jackson.
"I'm sorry man, I don't know much. She just told Maria she can't do patrol anymore. At least for a little while," Jesse explained
"Is she hurt or something?" You inquired, suddenly worried about Ellie
"No, I don't think so" he said with a shake of his head. "She probably just needs a break from it or something"
"Weird" you scoffed "She fucking loves patrol"
"Well, you'll see her tonight, right? Maybe she'll tell you more than she told Maria." Jesse shrugged as he mounted his horse
"Yeah, yeah" you concluded as you tried to shake the worry from your head
"Now, come on" Jesse urged as he cocked his head to the side. "Woods ain't gonna clear themselves"
"Christ, I forgot how much of a stickler you are on patrol," you huffed as you mounted Rainbow and followed Jesse. You loved Jesse; he was one of your closest friends. But on patrol, Mr. Fucking Jackson Wyoming could be a little too strict. It was nothing like it was with Ellie.
................... ................... ................... ...................
Luckily, patrol was quick and easy - Jesse made sure to do an easy route, even though you told him he didn't have to "baby" you. But it was better, quite frankly, because you were honestly pretty distracted. You couldn't get your mind to stop thinking about Ellie's sudden lack of interest in patrol. When she was younger, all she would do is beg Joel and Tommy to put her on the schedule. She would even sneak out sometimes and tag along with other groups when she wasn't cleared and had to be ushered home. Never in a million years would she willingly stop.
When you got back to your house, you didn't waste a second before showering and getting ready to go over to Ellie's. Once again, you brought her blanket and the VHS tape in hand and marched over to her house. Given the walk was short, you didn't have much time to get in your head about everything. The only thing on your mind was getting to see your best friend and making sure she was okay.
You freed up one hand and brought it to knock on her garage door. Hearing no response or shuffle from inside, you went for the doorknob. Locked.
Sure, you were a little early, but only by ten minutes. You thought maybe she was in the main house with Joel, so you went and tried that door instead - knocking and waiting.
After a couple of seconds, you heard Joel's grumbly voice echo, "One second"
Joel opened the door to you with a welcoming smile. "Well, hi there, little miss"
"Hi Joel, how are you?" you asked, genuinely, taking note of the grey hairs peeking through his beard and wrinkles around his eyes.
"Oh, you know, trying to ignore the creaks in my old bones and whatnot," he said with a burly laugh
"You're not old!"
"You're kind, but you're a liar," he laughed warmly. "Now what brings you over here?"
"I just thought maybe Ellie was inside? She wasn't in her room," you explained
"Oh, she ain't here - she went over to some girl's house. What's her name? It's like an animal or something," he said, searching for the girl's name
"Kat," you said bluntly
"Yeah, Kat, that's it" he nodded. "Did y'all have plans or something?" he asked as he noted the items you were holding
"No, I was just dropping these off," you lied, not really wanting to explain how you had been ditched by Ellie.
"Oh well, I can take them off your hands"
You handed over the blanket and tape to Joel, and politely refused his offer to stay for a cup of tea. Instead, you turned on your heels and headed in the direction of your house.
About halfway home, you caught sight of Ellie and Kat walking hand in hand. You were far enough away that you couldn't make anything out too clearly, but enough to see Kat swat away Ellie's hand before breaking apart fully, each going a different direction - Ellie towards you and Kat back towards her house.
You caught Ellie's gaze as you got closer to her, giving her a nod of the head
"Hey" Ellie called out as she jogged over to you, closing the distance
"Hi" you said back shyly, suddenly feeling a rush of nervousness in her presence
"My house is in the other direction, you know," she teased with a shaky smile
"Yeah, I was just there. Your door was locked, and Joel said you were out, so I just figured..." you trailed off, hoping she would get the hint without you having to say you thought she ditched you.
"Shit, sorry. I uh - " she started, but you cut her off
"'s fine, really" you said. You really didn't feel like hearing how she got swept away by Kat "We can rain check again if you wanna go back to Kat's"
"No, no," she refuted as she held up her arms defensively. "She's mad at me anyway right now"
"Oh?" your voice rang out in an octave higher than it usually is. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah, nothing to worry about," she said, brushing the question off. "Now let's go"
Not wanting to press anymore, you accepted her vague answer and figured she would talk about it later if she wanted to.
Back at her house, you and Ellie sat on her beaten-up sofa as she clicked through the menu screen of the Poltergeist, flicking between the unrated and rated version - eventually landing on the unrated.
"Unrated?" you questioned with a raised eyebrow. "I'm gonna have nightmares for a week"
"It'll be good, I promise," she cooed. "I'm here if you get too scared," she shyly murmured
A warm smile crept up your face at her comfort. Despite the anxieties that plagued you when you were apart and left wondering, when you were together with Ellie, they melted away. When she was with you, it was like nothing else existed except the two of you.
Halfway through the movie, after scare after scare, you realized you were the closest you had ever been to Ellie, not counting the times you woke up cuddling her after a sleepover. Your head rested on her shoulder as your hand clutched her arm and your thighs were pressed together. Your heart raced, and you were sure it would still be racing even if you weren't scared half to death.
You tried to control your ragged breathing and ignore the feeling of her skin on your fingertips. You tried to stay as still as possible. You tried to ignore the urge to drape your leg over hers to get closer. You didn't want to abruptly get up, but you also felt like you were crossing another line of your friendship if you stayed in your position.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
"You okay?" Ellie giggled as she turned her head to look at you
"Yeah, yeah," you assured as you peeled yourself away from her reluctantly. "This movie is just scary as shit"
"We can turn it off, then," Ellie posed as she hit the pause button. "Scaredy cat"
"Shut up," you rasped as you hit her with one of the throw pillows she had on her couch
"Oh, that's how it is?" she laughed with a grin
Ellie grabbed the pillow from your hands and hit you back with it square in the head, and then tried to hit you again, but instead hit the mugs of tea you had on the coffee table. The lukewarm liquid splashed over both of you. Ellie's jeans were covered in chamomile tea while your shirt clung to your body from the spilled liquid.
Both of you erupted into laughter at the events, doubling over and clutching your stomachs.
"Shit" Ellie choked out, trying to catch her breath while still laughing
"I'm gonna get you back for that, you know?" you teased as you tossed the pillow across the room
"Yeah? How?" she pressed, turning her body towards you, her eyes suddenly filled with a darkness you hadn't seen before. You'd be lying if you said your stomach wasn't in fucking knots at the sight
"Like I'm gonna tell you," you said, shifting in your seat and averting your eyes to the ground "gotta keep the element of surprise"
"Whatever," she chuckled as she rubbed the back of her neck. "lemme get you some new clothes," she offered as she got up and sauntered over to her closet.
You watched as she pulled out two sets of t-shirts and boxers. She threw one set over to you and placed the other set on the bed. You examined the clothes in your hands. A scroungy old band t-shirt she had gotten on patrol a while back. You had secretly always wanted to steal it from her, or have her give it to you.
You had changed in front of Ellie before. Countless times. But for some reason, right now, it felt different. Before, when you caught glances of her taut back muscles, you chalked the staring up to a normal curiosity. But you couldn't ignore now the immense craving you had to stare at every indent of her skin and every freckle that littered the surface.
Not giving yourself the chance to indulge in whatever weird fucking desires your head was conjuring up, you turned away from her and faced the wall. You slipped off your tea-stained shirt and jeans, and pulled the fresh shirt over your head before stepping into the boxers. When you turned back around, Ellie was already dressed, and her eyes were trained on you. That was until she quickly averted her gaze and started meticulously folding her clothes, which was out of the norm for the girl who stuffs her dirty clothes into the edge of her closet.
"Uhm, better?" Ellie asked as she cleared her throat and threw her folded clothes into the dirty pile in her closet.
"Yeah, thanks," you smiled as you shifted the weight between your two feet, suddenly feeling nervous. You decided that your nervousness would be less apparent if you were sitting down, so you opted to take a seat on Ellie's bed.
"Jesse told me you're stopping patrols," you blurted out all of a sudden
"Uhm...yeah," Ellie responded carefully as she sat down on the opposite side of the bed
"Why?" you pressed as you grew more comfortable, turning your body to face her. "You love patrolling"
"Just not loving it so much anymore," she shrugged as she placed her hands behind her head as she laid down
"You're a shitty liar," you said with a cold laugh. "Come on, it's me - you can tell me," you said as you playfully nudged her arm
"Not lying," she repeated as she cast her eyes up to the ceiling
"Well, whenever you wanna talk about it, I'm all ears," you assured.
Ellie and you fell into a comfortable silence, until an idea popped in your head.
"Oh, wait!" you exclaimed as you jumped off the bed and pranced over to the jeans you were previously wearing that were now sitting on the floor. You dug into the pocket and pulled out your Walkman, which already had the Radiohead tape in it you got on patrol last week.
"We never got to listen to this," you said as you held up the music player, to which she nodded to and smiled.
You nuzzled back into bed next to Ellie and handed her one of the wired earbuds, placing the other earbud in your ear.
You pressed play and let the music overwhelm your senses, taking in the moment. You closed your eyes, letting the sounds lull you to sleep.
Ellie, on the other hand, and unbeknownst to you, was wide awake and utterly incapable of sleeping. While she listened to the music, she watched as you slept and shed a tear. She knew what she had to do would kill you - she just wanted you to have one last good memory with her.
................... ................... ................... ...................
When you woke up, you were hoping you had gotten up early enough to experience the warmth of Ellie pressed against you to fill that longing in yourself you still couldn't pinpoint. But, instead, you woke up to a cold and empty bed. When your eyes adjusted to the light, you peered around her room, searching for any sign of her. None.
You made up her bed and picked up your clothes, examining each surface to see if she left behind a note. Not finding a single etching from her, you left, but not before stealing a hoodie from her closet and throwing it on.
After dropping your things off at home and changing, you headed out to the coffee shop to grab a coffee to ease the dull ache you felt in your bones that came with mornings. You sipped on your black coffee as you sat at a table outside, watching as the world passed by. People watching was a hobby you had taken up in the past years. Something about watching people do the mundane tasks made you feel a sense of normalcy and helped you, even if just for a second, ignore the state of the world you were living in.
Once you decided your level of people watching had teetered on the edge of staring and stalking, you called it quits.
Unsure what to do with the rest of your day, you decided to just go home and figure it out from there, figuring an idea would come to you or someone would make plans, which was usually the case. If you weren't scheduled for duty, there was only so much to do in Jackson. Bordeom was a perpetual disease in town.
Luckily, the rest of your week alternated between patrol and guard duty, filling your days and nights. Given Ellie had stopped patrols, you hadn't seen her since your last movie night. And as Fall was coming to an end as Halloween approached, your movie nights were numbered. You grew anxious at the thought of not having set plans with Ellie - the tradition was assurance that you would get to see her. Without them, and with Kat back in the picture, you weren't sure if you would see her at all, especially with how things were going now.
But all those worries went away on Friday. They were pushed aside until the next day when you had all the time in the world to ruminate. As always, you set up your TV, snacks, and blanket and awaited your bestfriend's arrival. A part of you was embarrassed of how excited you were to see her walk through the door. Like a pet anxiously waiting for their owner's arrival. But you couldn't help it.
Your excitement gradually dissipated as you watched the hands on the clock tick by and the moonlight shine brighter through your window. Ellie's track record this fall wasn't perfect, but she had shown up every time. Every time except for now. You finally figured she wasn't coming when you felt your leg go numb underneath you for not having moved in an embarrassingly long amount of time.
"Fucking idiot," you cursed at yourself, feeling a deep sense of embarrassment for how upset you were for her abandonment.
You racked your mind, trying to pinpoint any reason for her not coming. Kat, was the obvious one. But the deep parts of your brain thought that maybe you did something you weren't aware of. Or maybe you figured she was just over the tradition. Or you.
Those thoughts became amplified as more time went on. Days went by without a word from her. And when each Friday came, the same fate ensued.
You couldn't understand why Ellie was avoiding you. You didn't do anything wrong. At least, there was nothing you could think of. In the blink of an eye, while she was the center of your world and your best friend, you weren't hers. Or that's what it seemed like to you. You thought of confronting her; you even tried one night when you couldn't stop crying, but that wasn't like you. You couldn't decide what fate was worse - her blatantly ignoring your existence or hearing the words come out of her mouth about why she was avoiding you.
................... ................... ................... ...................
Halloween had finally crept up - the final close of fall. Your plans consisted of staying home with the lights off and lighting up a joint until you inevitably fell asleep on the couch with your hand buried in a bag of candy. But, when you told Dina of those plans, she was not having it.
"That is the saddest thing I have ever heard," Dina said point blank with her jaw slack
"Yeah, well I'm sad!" you bit back as you sprawled out on your bed dramatically
"You can be sad and not hole up in your house. You've been isolating for weeks," she quipped. She wasn't wrong.
"I really don't see a problem with becoming a hermit," you said back in all seriousness.
"No. No! Get your ass up" Dina urged as she physically pulled you out of bed, causing you to groan overdramatically. "it's Halloween, I'm throwing a party, and you're coming"
"But Dina" you huffed out, dragging the last syllable of her name
"No buts!"
"Ellie's gonna be there," you sighed out "She obviously does not wanna see me"
"Well, this will give you a chance to see her and figure out whatever the fuck she is doing. You haven't sought her out either, you know"
Dina had hosted her typical parties the past few weeks and practically begged you to come so you could get a chance to talk to Ellie. Each time, you had gotten ready and prepared yourself, but couldn't make it out of your front door. Your anxiety paralyzed you in a way you had never felt before. You could kill an infected without blinking an eye, but confronting Ellie? Utterly debilitating.
You felt like a coward. It was Ellie. Whatever it was, it had to be fixable. And quite frankly, you were growing tired of the ache that filled your soul without her. You wanted your best friend back. You needed answers. Luckily, Dina was hosting another one of her parties, and as always, begged you to make an appearance.
"God, fine" you reluctantly agreed "I'll come"
"Thank God" Dina breathed out with a sigh of relief "I really did not wanna have to physically carry you over"
Dina stayed as you got ready, helping you pick out an outfit and also to ensure you actually made it out the door. You and Dina headed to hers early so you both could finish the decorations and get a head start on drinking. And drink you did. Before anyone even arrived, you were far past tipsy and bordering on the edge of blackout.
While Dina had made her way out to the living room, you opted to stay in Dina's room in an attempt to build up enough courage to show your face to the people filtering in. Each time you heard the door open, you listened in, trying to decipher who had arrived. You felt stuck to the soft comforter beneath you on Dina's bed - your anxiety winning. One more shot couldn't hurt, right?
You grabbed the bottle Dina had given to you earlier and took a swig of the brown liquor. Without giving yourself time to think, you, and the bottle, finally stood up shakily and floated towards the voices echoing from the living room.
"There she is!" Dina yelled out as she saw you approaching
You gave her a half smile and a chuckle as you scanned the room. Jesse and Dina sat on the couch while Ellie and Kat sat smushed together in a recliner. While Jesse and Dina smiled, Kat's face was unreadable - somewhere between annoyed and indifferent. Ellie, on the other hand, didn't even look in your direction.
Even though your heart felt like it was breaking into a million pieces, you didn't retreat back into Dina's room like your mind was begging you to do. Instead, your legs carried you over to the couch next to Dina and Jesse.
You joined their conversation as best you could, but mostly just listened - the alcohol and anxiety made it hard for you to formulate any coherent sentence or response.
While you were faced away from Ellie, you couldn't help but feel like eyes were burning a hole through the back of you. But you didn't dare turn around.
You downed another shot from the bottle in your hand and stayed on the couch, even when Dina and Jesse got up to go prepare the Halloween-themed food - ghost marshmallows and mummies in a blanket, as Dina explained.
While you sat alone, your best friend was only three feet away from you and failed to even utter a polite hello. It made your blood fucking boil.
The alcohol that you consumed and the growing anger you had been harboring controlled your moves. You got up from your seat, with only a slight stumble, and marched over to Ellie.
"Ellie?" you rang out, your voice sounding louder than you intended.
"Mm" she hummed as she looked up at you briefly, before casting her eyes back down to the joint she was rolling
"Get up" you stated without slurring your words, your pent-up emotions finally coming out
Everyone in the house hushed and focused solely on you. Like a giant fucking spotlight was on you. But you didn't care. You didn't care what you needed to do. How mean you had to be. You just needed Ellie to give you something, anything.
For a brief second, Ellie's eyes shifted. The nonchalant, careless glaze she had over her eyes disappeared when your words hit her. For a second, she looked like the Ellie you had known.
"I said get up" you repeated, keeping your eyes trained on her as you pulled her arm to get her to stand
She looked over to Kat, who gave her an approving nod, and got up. You grabbed her forearm once more and dragged her out onto Dina's front porch.
Once the door was closed behind you, you turned to face her.
"What the fuck is your problem?" Ellie asked as she released her arm from your grip
"What is my problem? Are you joking?" you began. "Where the fuck have you been, Ellie?"
She let out a forced chuckle. "Here?"
"Don't be a dick, you know what I mean. I haven't seen you in weeks," you spoke out, your voice only slightly breaking
"Oh come on, it hasn't been that long. I've gone longer without seeing you." She said, playing it off
"Cut the bullshit, Ellie. You stopped patrolling with me. You stopped coming over. You stopped our fucking tradition - I'm not fucking blind; I know you're avoiding me," you said, punctuating each statement clearly.
"God, I'm not avoiding you, you're being dramatic." Her condescending tone and vagueness sent you over the edge.
"Why can't you give me a straight answer?" you huffed as you pleaded with her
"Because there really isn't one," she said as she brought her hand to her neck "I just got other shit going on right now. I'm just trying to prioritize"
"You're an asshole," you said as you pushed her shoulder, making her stumble backwards "Am I not a priority to you?"
She just stood there, silent and unwavering.
"I miss you," you choked out through pent-up tears
Ellie's eyebrows scrunched together as she shut her eyes tight, before she brought her fingers to rub the bridge of her nose. She let out a loud sigh, but not any words. Not the "I miss you too" that you so desperately wanted to hear.
Your eyes welled up with tears at the lack of response from her.
"Ellie, I - " you started but were interrupted by the front door opening
"Everything okay out here, babe?" Kat chirped
"Yeah, we're good," she said with a hint of a sniffle as she dusted off her hands on her jeans.
"Come back in then, I miss you!" Kat's voice scratched your eardrums.
Ellie shot you one last look before shaking her hand and following Kat inside, leaving you there on the porch.
"What the fuck?" you whispered to yourself as you backed against the wall. You placed your head in your hands and sank until you hit the ground, welcoming the cold feeling beneath you.

ALL ALONG - CHAPTER 2
Chapter 2 - End of Beginning
WC: 5k
The summer air in Jackson had now turned cool and crisp with the changing leaves. Fall was by far your favorite season, even if it was the most short-lived. There was just something about how the days were warm and lacked the heavy humidity, but still had a crisp bite to the air. The smell of the leaves on the ground. It grounded you in ways the other seasons couldn't seem to.
You woke up to the sound of leaves crunching outside the window as the brisk breeze billowed the curtains and cast a fresh essence throughout the house.
Fall was Ellie's favorite season, too. It was one of the first things you both bonded over when you first met. It became an unspoken, habitual tradition that every fall, no matter what, every Friday, you and Ellie would rewatch the same horror movies from VHS tapes Joel had curated a collection of.
Today was Friday. A Friday you been looking forward to for weeks, mostly because you had barely fucking seen Ellie, and this was a certain way to see her. She and Kat became official in the middle of the summer, and to everyone's surprise, they were still somehow together. But as always, that meant that you got put on the back burner like a forgotten tea kettle threatening to bubble over.
It's not that you didn't want Ellie to be happy. You did. You really did. But you couldn't help the pings of jealousy that coursed through your veins at the mention of Kat's name or the sight of them together. But that's normal, right? Anyone who saw their best friend with someone who isn't right for them would feel like this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only thing getting you through the day of monotonous gate duty was the thought of getting to watch a shitty scary movie with Ellie later. You counted down the hours, minute by minute, until Maria relieved you from post. The second the shifts changed, your ass bolted home, not wanting to waste another second.
As soon as you got home you started prepping - tidying up the living room, popping popcorn, and made sure the TV and video player were all working right. Once everything was in order you changed into your plaid pajama bottoms and tank top, cozied up on the couch and waited.
And waited.
And waited.
You looked at the empty spot on the couch next to you and let out a shaky breath. You glanced over to the clock hanging in the wall - 45 minutes late. With a final exhale, you accepted that she wasn't coming. You yanked the blanket off of you and threw it across the side of the couch. When you were about to eject the VHS from the player, your front door creaked open. Ellie stood in your doorway, out of breath, and with a bag of snacks in one hand and a VHS in another.
"Fuck, I'm so sorry" we're the first word she uttered as she stepped in and closed the door behind her "I couldn't decide what snacks to bring so I brought them all- and then I couldn't find the fucking tape" she rambled, still trying to catch her breath.
"I was worried that you forgot" you admitted as you pulled the blanket over you again
"How could I forget! This is like my favorite fucking thing" she said as she plopped next to you on the couch, tugging the edge of the blanket that rested on your outer thigh and pulled it to cover the both of you.
You couldn't help the smile that spread across your face. Sure she was late, but what did that matter - she's here now.
"So what movie we watching? I brought the Exorcist" she stated as she held up the tape and paired it with a shit eating grin
"Oh that one - put it in. 's my favorite" you exclaimed
"I know, that's why I brought it" she smirked. She pushed the tape into the player and sat back on the couch, bringing the popcorn bowl into her lap and handed you the snack bag containing assorted candy, chips, and cookies.
You pressed play and cozied into the blanket further, reveling in the comfort that your tradition brought.
No matter how many times you had seen this movie, it never failed to make you jump out of your skin. Any time a creepy sound would play, or a figure popped into the screen abruptly, you found yourself burying your head into Ellie's shoulder, shielding your eyes, and grasping at her arm.
By the time the movie was done your heart felt like it had just gone through a fucking marathon with how fast it was beating.
"I always forget how much of a pussy you are with these movies" Ellie laughed out as the credits rolled "Like you kill infected every day but a fake little movie gets you?"
"Shut up, I felt you hold your breath and lock up when it was scary! " you teased, noting how she would tense every time a scary scene came on and you would grab hold of her.
Her hand went to the back of her neck as she begrudgingly accepted your characterization "Whatever"
The wind outside made the house creak and groan - every noise causing you to turn and look over your shoulder with a shiver.
"'s just the wind" Ellie assured as she rested a gentle hand on your shoulder, before quickly retracting it and tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear
" I know, but you know when you watch a scary movie and suddenly everything is scary?" you explained as you felt your shoulder burn from where she had touched
"Yeah I know what you mean" she agreed "I could spend the night if you wanted. I mean we both gotta be at patrol early anyways" she offered with a causal shrug. It was weird, not in the slightest - Ellie and you were no stranger to sleepovers.
"Yeah?" you repeated, a smile slowly creeping across my face at the thought of not having to spend a night alone scared in your house.
"Or course " she smiled
With that you grabbed the blanket Ellie had brought and tossed it onto your bed before pulling down the sheets for you and Ellie to climb into.
After you were both in, you pulled the covers up to your chins and couldn't help but let out a light giggle.
"What's so funny?" Ellie urged as she turned over to her side to face you in bed
"Nothing - just, do you remember the first time we watched this movie and we both screamed so loud Joel came into the room with his pistol thinking infected infiltrated the town?" you eventually got out, getting interrupted by your own laughter
Ellie laughed out loud at the memory "oh my god - I totally forgot about that. We almost gave him a fucking heart attack"
After about a good minute or two of shared laughter, you breathed out a sigh - you couldn't help but feel nostalgic with her next to you. In times like these it felt like no time had passed and nothing had changed. But that wasn't the reality. Moments like this were scarce and fleeting, and it scared you. It scared you how even when you were with her, your time already felt like a memory waiting to be relived.
"I've missed you Els" you confessed somewhat impulsively- you weren't totally sure if you said it in your head or out-loud.
"I know. I've missed you too. 'm sorry I've been sorta - absent" she offered hesitantly, like she felt embarrassed about her lack of presence.
"'s okay. Just don't disappear on me" you assured with a giggle to lighten the mood
"Oh never" she assured "can't live without you, are you kidding?"
"Good" you hummed with a yawn, feeling the tiredness take over you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You woke up the next morning with a warmth pressed against your back and an arm draped around your waist - a warmth that contradicted the pre-dawn darkness enveloping the room.
It wasn't unusual for Ellie and you to wake up like this - it almost happened every time you had a sleepover. But for some reason, this time, you couldn't ignore the butterflies in your lower stomach when you focused on how good she felt next to you. How warm her hand was resting on your stomach. How, if you focused hard enough, you could make out each soft breath that left her lips and hit the back of your neck.
'the fuck is wrong with me' you thought, acutely aware of how wrong it was to be having thoughts like this about your best friend.
Selfishly, you wanted to stay like this forever. But it felt wrong - like you was crossing a line by even thinking this. You also wanted to limit the possible awkward conversation that would ensue when she woke up with her arms around you.
Not wanting to disturb her, you slowly peeled her arm off of you and set it down gently beside her as you scooched out of bed. You quickly left the room, shutting the door behind you softly, and went immediately to the bathroom to splash cool water on your face, which helped the blush on your cheeks subside.
You shook off your thoughts and decided to do your normal routine of making coffee and toast, with the addition of making tea and an extra slice for Ellie, figuring she would need the energy for patrol.
The strong scent of fresh-brewed coffee filled the kitchen, only fueling the warmth in the cozy atmosphere. You perched yourself on the couch with your coffee and blanket and enjoyed the peace and quiet, relishing in it until it got stripped away from the inevitable day ahead.
"Morning" Ellie rasped out, her voice still husky from sleep, as she emerged from your bedroom into the living area
"Good morning" you smiled "There's tea and toast on the counter if you want" you added
Ellie grabbed the breakfast and mimicked your actions - taking a seat on the couch next to you and taking a generous bite of her toast
"Sleep okay?" she asked as she sipped her tea, slightly wincing from the burning water as she removed her lips from the cup
"Mhm yeah - you?" you said as casually as you could, trying your best to ignore the racing thoughts you had this morning
"Really good, actually," she chuckled before switching the topic, "do you know what route we're on today?"
"Think we're on Alpine Valley" you concluded as you set your empty mug down on the table
"I've been waiting to get put back on that one - there's this old music store that Joel told me has a bunch of shit to grab," she rushed out excitedly
You couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. But your smile was quickly wiped when you glanced at the clock and took note of the time.
"Shit, we're gonna be late" you muttered out as you stood up abruptly. "Maria will have our asses if we're late"
"Oh shit, yeah" Ellie agreed, mimicking your actions and getting up, wiping the toast crumbs off of her
After Ellie and you quickly got changed, you headed out, making a quick stop at her house so she could grab her gear.
Once you grabbed Shimmer and Rainbow, your designated horses, and listened to Jesse's routine spiel about safety and unity or whatever, Ellie and you were out the gates and set on your designated route.
As we trotted along the tree-lined path, a comfortable silence casted over, the only sounds coming from the early morning birds and the hooves of the horses. Eventually, you got bored, so you picked up your speed until you were riding side by side with Ellie.
"You said you've done this route before?" you questioned as you slowed Rainbow to match Shimmer's speed.
"Yeah, couple times" she said as she looked over to you "'s usually pretty quiet. A few shops and houses"
"Cool" you nodded, nothing that it would probably be an easy patrol. "So uh, how are things with you and Kat?" you shifted the topic. Even though you weren't too fond of their relationship, you still wanted to be there for Ellie and be able to talk about these things.
She let out a deep chuckle "you really wanna know or are just being polite? I know you don't like her to much"
"No! I like her!" you lied as convincingly as you could "Come on, I'm your best friend of course I wanna know"
After an eye roll, she spoke "'s good. Really good actually. She's changed a lot. She's been really caring and attentive and shit"
Yeah sure. Attentive? More like possessive and co-dependent.
"Good!" you chirped overly cheerfully "and you're happy?"
"Yes" she said with a laugh "I'm happy"
"Then I'm happy" you smiled fakely before shifting the conversation once more "where's the check in spot?"
"'s just up ahead" she spoke "see that building over the hill?" she pointed with her eyes as she nudged Shimmer along
You followed her gaze and nodded when you saw a tall building covered in overgrown weeds that she was referring to.
"Race ya" you quipped as you lightly tapped Rainbow to speed up, leaving Ellie behind
"Motherfucker!" she screamed out as she tried to catch up to you
You came to a stop and jumped off Rainbow, taking her reins in your hands and tied them up onto a pipe outside of the building when Ellie finally met up with you, about twenty seconds behind
You shot her a confident smirk, gloating your win just a little, even if it was rigged in your favor
"You got a head start" she mocked as she got off Shimmer and tied her up - Ellie never liked to lose, that was one thing you learned early on
"Someone sounds like a sore loser" you mocked back, only making her shake her head and smile
"Come on" she guided as she motioned towards the door with a head nod with a smirk
Ellie led the way up the stairs to the top of the building where the sign in book was and started marking our names down. You took note of the look of the place - an old tethered couch, a desk with some random papers, a giant window overlooking the town.
"Wow, you can see everything from up here" you gawked as you stared out at the expansive open view "is that Jackson?" you asked as you pointed out to the distance
Ellie sauntered over, taking her place next to you, directing her eyes to where your finger was pointed.
She let out a laugh before grabbing your arm and moving it in the completely opposite direction "No, that is Jackson, over there"
Fuck, the feeling came again. The second she grabbed your arm, the butterflies that you've been trying to ignore came back.
"Shit, I was way off, huh?" you said with a laugh, pushing the fluttering in your stomach down as Ellie retracted her grasp.
"'s okay, we got one person here who knows where shit is" she joked as she swayed between her feet
You jabbed her arm before you turned and started heading back the way you came "Come on then Els, lead the way"
-————————
After a short ride, Ellie and you had made it into the town you were set to patrol. The buildings were covered in a thick layer of vines and surrounded by fallen leaves. You looked over the decayed signs, letting your mind wander to imagine what this place might have looked like before everything happened. Did people waltz down the street without a care in the world? Did they take a second to look at what was in front of them or were they too preoccupied with their internal obligations? Were the streets filled with music and laughter and not the silent stillness that your ears were met with now? Your imagination was a stark difference to the reality.
"Melodies" you read out, looking at the fallen sign on a decrepit storefront in front of you "'s this the music store you were telling me about?"
"Must be" Ellie surmised as she peered inside the dirty windows "let's check it out"
Ellie took the lead, unholstering her pistol and gripping it with her hand as she slowly opened the front door, checking behind her every so often to make sure you weren't far. You held your gun and pointed it down as you tip toed behind her, glancing over your shoulder for any sign of infected.
You and Ellie cleared the floor in tandem, listening for any clicking or rummaging that would let you know you were not alone.
"Think it's clear," Ellie announced as she rounded a corner, putting her gun back in its holster.
Relieved you didn't have to kill anything just yet, you tucked your pistol into the back waistband of your jeans and let out a sigh as you glanced over the room. There were rows of half-broken guitars strung up on the wall caked in layers of dirt and dust, a drum set in surpringly good condition, and a sign that pointed to the basement that read "more cool shit."
"Els, are these the guitar strings you were looking for?" you announced as you picked through the shelves, noticing the item she had mentioned
"Oh fuck yeah" she said as she made her way over and grabbed the item from your hand "needed these"
You let out a giggle and left Ellie's side to browse some more. The arrow to the basement drew you in like a moth to a flame - you really wanted some new tapes for your walkman and hoped they would be downstairs with the "cool shit" the store promised
You glanced over and saw Ellie preoccupied with rummaging through the guitar gear and didn't want to disturb her, so you figured it couldn't hurt to go down by yourself. As you crept down the staircase to the basement you untucked your gun from your pants and held it in one hand, while the other held your flashlight. You paused at the bottom of the stairs to listen for any sign of infected, but heard nothing.
You did a proper sweep of the room before you let yourself indulge in its offerings and didn't see anything out of the ordinary, just leaky pipes and picked through shelves.
You tucked my gun away and used your flashlight to illuminate the bins in the corner that were filled with tapes. Lucky. You rummaged through, picking up any tape that looked interesting until you finally found some that were worth taking back - Nirvana, Radiohead, and The Beatles - all artists that Ellie had introduced you to.
You swung your backpack off and placed the tapes inside. Your head turned at a faint noise of scuffling, peaking your attention. You held still, waiting to see if there were any more noises. Nothing. You brushed it off as Ellie fucking around upstairs and continued with what you were doing.
You swung your backpack back on and let your flashlight guide you back to the staircase.
Scuffling. The noise again. You stopped in your tracks and turned around, taking your gun out once again and pointing it in front of you. You peered down the aisle as you walked slowly, approaching the source of the sound you were hearing. Your body relaxed and a sigh escaped you once you turned the corner and saw nothing there.
But the relief didn't last long. In a second, you were tackled to the ground from behind - a broken floorboard piercing and tearing through the side of your thigh and blistered blood-stained arms pinning me to the ground as you tried to wrestle free.
"Fuck - Ellie!" you screamed as loud as you could as you to reach for your gun, knife, anything to kill the infected on top of you.
You used your legs to kick and hit at the monster while your hands pushed its face away. You stared at the face of what was once a person, and now nothing more than a host for some ungodly virus. The last thing you would fucking see was a face littered with fungus and blood, with teeth just begging to take a bite.
what a stupid fucking way to go out.
You closed your eyes and tried to envision anything else - anything better than what was in front of me. Flashes of your quaint Jackson house, your friends gathered at Dina's, your horse Rainbow, Ellie's face.
You continued screaming out, so loud that you could feel the muscles of your throat ripping, hoping Ellie would come down because at this point she was your only hope at making it out of here alive, or human for that matter.
You finally got enough leverage and was able to shimmy your knife out of its holster and landed a stab into the stalker's side, but it didn't stop it. It was fucking relentless.
"Oh fuck" you heard Ellie shout as she raced over. She pulled out her gun and shot the infected in the head while you continued to struggle below it.
You felt the slack, dead weight fall on top of you, causing you to open your eyes in shock - actualizing that you weren't fucking dead.
"Get this thing off of me" you shouted as you squirmed underneath it, using all of your might to try and get out of its grasp.
Ellie quickly listened, crouching down next to you and pushing the infected off - the only trace of it now was its blood that covered your body.
You gasped for air as you sat up, trying your best to return to a normal breathing pattern.
"Are you okay - are you bitten?" Ellie frantically asked as she assessed you, pulling at your clothing to see if there were any bite marks.
You pushed her hand away "'m fine, it didn't get me" you assured "just - fuck. Something cut my leg"
You carefully moved your leg so you could see where the pain was coming from - sure enough there was a good four inch cut with a steady stream of red flowing and puddling beneath it.
"The fuck happened?" Ellie asked as she grabbed a cloth from her bag and began to bandage your wounded thigh.
"Stalker" you breathed out "I checked down here like four fucking times and it came out of nowhere"
"You should've waited for me. Or at least told me where the hell you were going" Ellie scolded as she tied one final knot on the makeshift tourniquet.
"Thanks" you spat as you stood up shakily "don't need a fucking lecture right now Ellie"
You didn't know why you were mad at her. She was only pointing out the obvious, and what you did was stupid.
"Jesus, you're fucking stubborn" she huffed with a laugh as she trailed behind you "and you're welcome for saving your life"
You turned around to face her, pausing your movements for a split second "Thank you" you sincerely offered with a smile, and a hint of an eyeroll.
Without words, Ellie matched your pace and wrapped her arm around your shoulder, helping me bear the weight you couldn't on your injured leg.
"Let's get your ass home," she laughed as she helped lead you out of the store and onto Rainbow.
---
You insisted to Ellie that you were fine to keep patrolling. You begged her to let you keep going, actually. But she was stubborn too and insistent on going back.
After riding for a while, out of the corner of my eye you spotted clear blue water dancing in the afternoon sunlight
"Ellie - stop for a second" you shouted out to the girl riding in front.
Ellie stopped Shimmer and looked back at you "Are you okay?" she asked, worry filling her eyes
"Yeah, I'm good - I just wanna clean off real quick, I fucking reek" you shouted out as you carefully jumped off Rainbow, wincing slightly as your leg brushed against the saddle.
"You can't wait until you get home? We're not that far" she shouted as she stayed planted on her horse
"Ellie I literally am making myself gag right now. 's like the infected's blood has seeped into my pores. Plus I need to clean my cut" you said as you took of your jacket and placed it on top of Rainbow "I'll be so quick - I promise"
"Fine" she said stubbornly, but you could see the smile trying to creep through her tightly drawn lips.
Upon her approval, not that you even needed it, you limped off to the edge of the water and stripped off your clothes until you were bare, setting them in a neat pile before plunging into the water. Luckily, it was a warm fall day, and it hadn't cooled down enough yet to make the water freezing. Just mildly bone chilling.
You dunked under the water, using your hands to brush away the remnants of blood that were caked onto your skin and hair. You lightly brushed your hand over the cut, hissing at the sting. It wasn't the cleanest, but it was better than before, but you still would properly disinfect it.
You submerged myself under the water one last time before getting out, letting yourself enjoy the simple pleasure of basking in the natural water. You got out of the water and re-dressed into your shirt and underwear as you mentally cursed at yourself for not packing an extra set of clothes.
"Ellie?" you shouted out
"Uh yeah" she returned
"Can you bring me my bag?"
You didn't hear a verbal response, but could hear the faint sounds of her getting off the horse and the crunching of her shoes as she made her way through the brush until she stood in front of you.
"Thanks" you smiled as you grabbed the bag from her, immediately opening it to pull out the med kit.
"Uh, yeah - course" she said, her voice faltering the tiniest bit as she glanced at you on the ground
"'s the matter with you?" you laughed "please do not tell me you're worried about me, because I am fine" you assured as you poured alcohol over the wound
"What? I'm good" she said with a dry chuckle as she averted her eyes away from you and over to the water
"Okay then" you trailed as you grabbed the needle and thread, mentally preparing yourself to stitch up the cut.
"Shit" you let out a choked gasp as you pierced the skin, threading the needle through the torn flesh and mending it back together.
"You want some help?" Ellie urged as she saw my hand shaking, taking your hand in her own
You wanted to say no and continue your stubborn streak. But you knew it would get done a lot quicker if she were to finish it.
"Yeah, here" you complied as you held the needle out to her.
She crouched down next to you and grabbed the needle. As gently as she could, she pierced the skin and continued with the next set of stitches.
You hissed through your teeth from the pain, grabbing onto her shoulder to stabilize yourself and grabbing harder at every shockwave of pain.
"Okay, all done" she spoke as she lightly tapped your leg and rose up.
"Thanks, Els" you smiled as you got up and put your pants back on. "and really, I'm sorry about before. I know it was dumb of me to go down there alone"
She waved you off with a smile "'s fine. I'm just glad you're okay. Would've sucked if I had to shoot you"
"Yeah, it would've" you laughed "I got some good shit though" you continued as you both made your way back onto the horses
"Yeah? What?" she pressed
"Couple of tapes" you tutted "we can listen to them together later if you want. After dinner?"
"Oh, yeah. For sure" she rasped, letting her hand crawl to the back of her neck.
"Yeah?" you urged back, seeking reassurance from her
"Yeah! You'll need someone to keep you company and play nurse anyways"
The ride back luckily was easy. No more infected and not too long. The only thing that really bothered you was the dull throb and sting emanating from your thighs every time Rainbow trotted.
Immediately upon your arrival you were whisked away to the medical center, despite your assurance that you were fine. The doctor on duty used a proper disinfectant, not the old alcohol you used, and re-did the stitches with medical grade sutures. Ellie tried to stay with you, but you figured she needed a break from worrying so you told her to go home and to come over later.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dina, Jesse, and Maria all came by to your house to check on you, one by one, after the news had spread about your injury. It was a little bit overkill for a glorified scrape, but sweet nonetheless.
You were ordered to stay off the leg for a week and to limit movement, so you were stuck planted to your couch.
You reached for your backpack and pulled out the tapes you had retrieved today and got them set up next to your walkman, prepping them for whenever Ellie came over.
You stared at them for a couple minutes, and then to the clock. You went back and forth like that for an hour. Then two. Eventually, your house was dark - the setting sun far beneath the edges of the Earth. Hours had gone by and no sign of Ellie.
You gave one final glance to the tapes before pushing them off to the side and ultimately accepting that they wouldn't be listened to tonight. She wasn't coming. You figured she was tired from patrol and just crashed when she got home. You braced yourself and lifted yourself off the couch, trying extra hard to not put any weight on your leg as you hobbled over to your bedroom.
When you crawled into bed, you couldn't help but lie in the spot Ellie did the night before - the smell of her still lingering on the sheets, and if you tried hard enough, you could almost feel the warmth she left.

Hi! This is my first ever post/work on Tumblr - honestly have no idea how to work it or make the posts cute (I’ll learn lol) so any tips/advice is welcome (PLZ)!!

SYNOPSIS - You and Ellie had been friends since the minute you set foot in the little town of Jackson. You two just clicked. She knew everything about you, and you knew everything about her. But like anyone, of course, there are some things no one could know. Some things you didn’t even know about yourself - like why your heart raced every time Ellie got close, or your fingers burned with rage at the sight of Ellie with another girl.

CHAPTER 1 - AGAIN? WC: 3.2k
"See you tomorrow!" Jesse called out as he split from your side and started walking in the opposite direction towards his house.
You gestured him off with a polite wave of the hand, too tired to verbally acknowledge him - the day of dodging infected and trudging through abandoned buildings took a real toll on you.
Eventually, your body made it to your front door, a victory given you felt like every muscle in your body was on the verge of disintegrating with every step taken.
The wooden front door opened with its usual creak - the inviting nature of your home sending warmth and comfort over you, a drastic difference from the abandoned houses you and Jesse patrolled all day.
Not bothering to put your bag and shoes away neatly, like you usually do, you kicked both off and let them fall to the ground - you'd deal with it after a good shower and nap. Frankly, all you fucking wanted was a shower. The infected's blood and dirt that accumulated to form a new layer of skin desperately needed to be washed off.
Making your way from the entryway to the bathroom, which was tucked just off of the living room, you jumped. Not because there was anything scary or spooky. No, as usual, your bestfriend Ellie was perched on your couch - sprawled out like it belonged to her.
"Jesus - have you been here all day? You have your own house you know" you said with feigned annoyance, but the smile that crept on your face said otherwise.
"Yeah but Joel's there. You have a whole house to yourself - be a shame to have it empty all day" she motioned out to the space as she sat up from her lying down position
You rolled your eyes with a laugh as you sat down next to her, letting out a deep exhale at the feeling of the soft cushions beneath you, sinking back into the comfort and normalcy that being home (and Ellie's presence) brought.
"Good patrol?" she questioned as she turned to face you
"Yeah - cleared a bunch of houses on top of the hill. Killed a few runners. The usual" You explained with a nonchalant shrug, like killing zombies was a totally normal everyday occurance. "But I need to fucking shower so so bad"
"I mean I wasn't gonna say anything but" Ellie trailed as she plugged her nose and eyed you up and down.
"Fuck off" you laughed as you playfully hit her arm "are you gonna stick around here?" you questioned as you peeled yourself off the couch
"No, I gotta go home and get ready for later. You are coming right?" she quipped.
"Fuck I totally forgot" you said as you placed my hands over your face "You think Dina would be mad if I bailed?" You asked as you peered your eyes out from between your fingers.
"No come on, you have to come!" she urged "You bailed last time and made me go to a party all by myself. It was hell."
"Fine, fine. Whatever" You hesitantly agreed as you slumped over in defeat "Just come back over when you're done getting ready?"
"Always" she assured - Ellie and you always got ready together for parties, it was like an unspoken rule of your friendship, especially if she was the one dragging you somewhere. "Now go shower you stink" she laughed as she got up and collected her things
"Shut up before I change my mind," You retorted back, which earned a laugh from Ellie as she mumbled something you couldn't quite catch under her breath and left through your front door.
You made a beeline for the bathroom, not wanting to go another minute feeling dirty, and turned on the shower as hot as it would go, which was honestly lukewarm at best, but still better than nothing.
The constant stream of water hummed over you and washed away the dirt and blood that accumulated throughout the day. It soothed your tired muscles and almost made you feel like a person again. After washing your hair and body with the lavender soap Maria gifted to you the other week, you stayed under the water, soaking in the relaxation as much as you could. It was only when the water ran cold that you were forced to get out, drying yourself off with a scratchy towel.
You combed through your hair as best as you could- the blood and dirt that previously stained the hair created tangles that your comb kept snagging on, but eventually, after a couple good passes, it was back to its soft and shiny norm. You slathered on as much lotion as I could, another gift from Maria, which felt nice as the Jackson summer sun had utterly dried the hell out of your skin.
After finishing up in the bathroom, you decided you should probably get dressed for Dina's party, if you could even call it that. It was more of a glorified hangout with your friends, plus alcohol or weed if anyone scrounged them up on patrol.
You didn't feel like putting any effort into your appearance, given you really did not wanna go, so you opted for a simple white tank top and lightwash jeans that Dina cut into shorts for you, along with a flannel you had stolen from Ellie in case the summer night got chilly.
Right on cue, you heard the front door open and Ellie call out to announce her arrival. You shouted an "In here" to let her know that you were in your room, even though she probably would've figured that out anyway.
"Dude, you have my fucking flannel? I thought I lost it!" she huffed as she came into your room and plopped down on the bed
"Sorry" you hummed out as you applied a coat of mascara to your eyelashes. "Want it back?"
"Nah, keep it" she shrugged as she made herself comfortable, "looks better on you than me"
You felt the feeling of butterflies creep into your stomach at her compliment. It was a feeling that happened often. More often in the last couple of years. But every time you felt it, you choked it up to nothing and pushed it aside.
"Thanks" you offered as you tried to stop the blush that was spreading across your cheeks. With one final swipe of lip gloss, you were done with your makeup look and plopped down on the bed next to Ellie.
"Uh oh - no. Ger your ass up. If you lay down you're not gonna get up. Come on" she urged as she pulled your arm to make you sit upright.
"Like five minutes. Just five minutes please" You begged as you threw yourself down on the bed and dramatically covered your face with a pillow.
Ellie laughed at your desperate attempt to get out of going, pulling the pillow away and throwing it across the room. "No way. We're already late. 's gonna be fun!"
"Ugh" you groaned as loud as you could to really get your disdain across. "Why are you even excited to go - you hate these things more than I do?" you offered as you pulled yourself out of bed and started to slip on your shoes.
"No reason" she said softly as her hand went to rub the back of her neck. Rubbing her neck was her tell.
"Uh no, spill" you demanded, knowing there was more to it "You're dragging me here, so tell me"
"Kat might be there," she shyly admitted
Right. Kat, her on-and-off ex-girlfriend. The one that gave her the tattoo on her forearm that I love. The one that has broken her heart more times than I can count just to come crawling back. The one who keeps Ellie all to herself.
"Ellie - really?" You pressed, trying your hardest to make your voice sound unedged, as you finished lacing up your shoe, "Are you guys a thing again?"
"I don't know, maybe - why do you care? You jealous?" she trailed with a smirk, kicking me with her foot
"No i'm not jealous," You said back defensively "I just don't think she's good for you. She's broken your heart how many times now?"
"I know" she sighed, "but we talked the other day, and it seemed different. Like she was serious this time," she said naively
"and she wasn't before?" You breathed out with a dry chuckle
"Fuck - can we just drop it?" she huffed out "Didn't know I'd get a fucking lecture"
"Fine, fine -it's dropped" You grumbled back "Let's go before I change my mind"
With a satisfied smirk, Ellie led the way out of the house and on the road to Dina's house, which wasn't far from yours, just a few blocks over. Along the way, Ellie and your's conversations drifted back into the norm - filled with recounting of your patrol and bets on whether Dina and Jesse would be together tonight or not.
As you entered the house, echoes of voices filled your ears and the faint smell of weed was wafting through the air. Someone must've gotten lucky on patrol.
"Wow, look who made it!" Jesse chirped out from the couch with his arm draped around Dina.
"You owe me a cigarette," You snidely said under your breath to Ellie, who was now pouting that she lost the bet.
"Yes, yes I'm here" you said with an eye roll as you made your way over to greet Dina and Jesse, joining them on the couch.
"She's here thanks to me," Ellie added as she took a seat next to you on the couch
"Wouldn't blame you - I was about to bail, but Dina convinced me" Jesse shrugged, which earned him a nudge from Dina's shoulder.
"So uh, who scored the weed?" You asked, hoping someone would fucking offer you a hit
"That would be me," Dina said proudly as she pulled out a joint from her pocket "found a fucking bunker of it earlier this week"
"No fucking way" Ellie gasped as she snatched the joint from Dina's hand, inspecting it and holding it up to her nose "Smells good"
You grabbed it from Ellie's hand and put it between your lips as you reached for the lighter on the coffee table. You lit it carefully, making sure to keep the flame even so it wouldn't burn wonky. After taking a long inhale, you passed the joint over to Ellie, who took it happily.
You exhaled with a slight cough, given it had been a while since you had the pleasure of smoking. The substance instantly helped the ache in your muscles and made your brain quiet down, which is exactly what you needed.
After passing around the joint until it was nothing but a burning ember, or a roach as Dina called it, everyone decided it was time to drink.
"Anyone on patrol tomorrow?" Jesse asked as he reached for the clear bottle on the coffee table and started pouring shots out in little mismatched shot glasses you all had collected on different patrols - there was a few from Jackson, one from Montana, and your favorite: one with obscenely huge drawn-on tits from San Diego.
"I am!" a voice chimed out from the front entryway. Kat.
"Oh hey, Kat" Jesse greeted, while you, on the other hand, couldn't control your eye roll at her appearance.
In an instant, Ellie's presence at your side vanished. She rushed up to the tattooed girl, practically drooling over her, and glued herself to Kat's side, which is no doubt where she'd be stuck for the rest of the night.
"Gimme that," you said to Jesse as you snatched the Miami shot glass from his hands. You quickly threw the shot back, inviting the burn that came along with it.
"Jesus, patrol wasn't that bad" he laughed as he watched you grimace from the bitter residual taste of the alcohol.
"'s not about patrol," Dina whispered over to him, pointing her eyes over to Ellie and Kat, who were now cozied up in the corner.
"Oh. Ohhh" he said, realizing, "they're back together?"
"Guess so" you said with a shrug, trying your best to remain chill and collected and not like the idea of Ellie and Kat together made you wanna rip your hair out.
"'s just a bad idea" Dina added as she took her shot, wincing at the taste "I give it two weeks. A month tops"
"Yeah, let's hope" you murmured under your breath as you poured yourself another shot, and one for Ellie.
You brought the shot over to Ellie, physically forcing your face to not show your disgust at the pair practically drooling over each other even though they literally just got back together.
"Shot?" You questioned as you graciously held the glass out to the freckled girl.
"Oh no, I'm good, thanks," she said, brushing you off and refocusing her attention towards Kat.
Your mouth hung open for a second at her dismissal, but she always fucking got like this when she had a girlfriend. You shut my mouth and turned away on your heels, taking the shot for yourself as you went back over to Jesse and Dina, making eyes at them on your way over.
"Ouch" Jesse winced as you sat next to him, obviously referring to the interaction he just witnessed.
"Shut up" you muttered with a tight lip as you nudged his shoulder with yours. He mimed zipping his lips and throwing away the key.
"We should play a game" Dina offered excitingly in an attempt to switch the topic
"Like what?" You questioned, your attention perked at the thought of a distraction
"Uhm I don't know. Never have I ever?" she suggested, looking around for approval.
You and Jesse nodded while Ellie and Kat were on their own planet, totally tuned out and not at all listening to anyone but each other.
"Stop macking were playing Never Have I Ever," Dina yelled out to the two, grabbing their attention.
Eventually, everyone circled around the coffee table, sitting in chairs or couches we pulled in.
"Okay, I'll start" Dina said as she raised her hand up, extending her five fingers. "Never have I ever gotten a tattoo"
"'s not fair" Ellie grumbled as she, and Kat, both put their fingers down.
"Alright, never have I ever lost my gun on patrol," Ellie spoke, causing Jesse to put his finger down.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. It was one time!" he groaned before starting his turn "Never have I ever gotten so drunk I had to be carried home"
To that one, Dina and you both put your fingers down.
"Okay" you spoke, trying to hush your laughter that came as a result of the memory of your drunken escapades. "Never have I ever had sex with a man," - which made Dina put her finger down.
"Fuck, really? That's targeted," she gasped with a laugh as no one else put their fingers down. "Okay, never have I ever had sex while on patrol"
Ellie, Kat, and you all put our fingers down.
"You and Jesse, really, never?" you pressed at Dina, shooting her a questioning look
"Nope. Jesse takes patrol way too seriously. If only he would lighten up..." Dina chirped while side-eyeing Jesse "Now who the hell did you sleep with?" she redirected towards you
"Remember that girl who was here for like a summer and then left? Fuck what was her name" You spoke, trying to remember any information of the girl
"Max" Ellie interjected quickly as she casted her eyes down
"Yes, Max!" You exclaimed, "wasn't any good though"
After a couple more rounds, Dina and you both had one finger left up while the rest still had some left to put down.
"Okay, okay" Ellie said. "Never have I ever had a wet dream"
Begrudgingly, you put my finger down, making you the loser. "Ellie, that was supposed to be private" you whisper-shouted through gritted teeth. You caught Kat look over to Ellie, and then to you, with a nasty look on her face.
"You could've not put a finger down!" she justified
"Yeah, but then I would be a cheater," you huffed
"Loser takes a shot!" Dina exclaimed as she handed you the bottle, which you happily grabbed and took a big swig out of.
Following the game, everyone mellowed out a bit, letting the effects of the weed and alcohol take over. Jesse and Dina were making out on the edge of the couch while Kat and Ellie were back in their love bubble in the corner. Gag.
You didn't feel like being surrounded by all of that, so you headed outside to get some fresh air and a smoke. You took a seat on the front porch stoop and draped Ellie's flannel across your shoulders to shield them from the brisk summer breeze.
From of your pocket you pulled out a cigarette and a lighter. Internally, you thanked whoever in Jackson kept up with tobacco production.
You heard the front door creak open behind you, and turned around to see who would be joining you.
"Hey" Ellie hummed as she took a seat next to you. Without words, you handed her the cigarette, which she accepted. "Sorry about what I said during the game. I didn't mean to air your shit out like that"
You let out a chuckle "Please, it's fine. I really don't care," you assured.
"Okay, good. You just seemed a little mad or something," she softly added as she took an inhale of the cigarette
"I'm good Els" you cooed as you accepted the cigertte back "Did you wanna spend the night still?" You asked trying to get a gauge on plans for the night.
"Uhm, yeah," she said hesitantly as she toyed with the loose strings of her converse.
"If you wanna go to Kat's 's fine" You mumbled, taking another inhale before ashing it on the ground
"No, we had plans and everything," she rushed out
"Ellie, seriously don't worry about it. I'm probably just gonna crash anyway"
"Okay" she smiled shyly
"I'm gonna head home, will you tell everyone I said bye?" You asked as I got up from the stoop. You figured you had been there long enough and all you really wanted still was to sleep in your bed.
"You're drunk, let me walk you back," Ellie insisted as she already began standing up
"It's like three blocks away and we're in a guarded town. I'm good Ellie; go back inside" you insisted, shooing her inside.
Ellie nodded hesitantly and wished you to get home safe before going back into Dina's. You started walking once you heard the front door close behind her and the echoes of your friend's voices stop.
On your walk back, everything caught up to you. The long patrol, the weed, the shots. The images of Kat and Ellie burned into your skull. You felt sick. Quickly, you curled over and threw up into the bushes lining your front yard.
"Fuck" you groaned as you used your hand to wipe your mouth before stumbling the rest of the way inside.
You flicked on the lights and headed to the bathroom, discarding your clothing as you went, letting them clutter the floor. After cleaning yourself up and brushing your teeth, you finally got what you wanted - no needed. Your bed. You were so tired your brain didn't even have a chance to think about the day, or Ellie, before you fell asleep.
