New chapter at Momkai & De Correspondent

In the spring of 2016 I decided that it was time for a new challenge. No matter how much I loved the flexibility and diversity of working freelance, I got the feeling I was no longer learning enough to feel like I was advancing as a professional.  So I decided to apply for a job as front-end developer at one of the coolest creative agencies in the Netherlands, and guess what?! They hired me! Since this summer I've been working full time on projects like Het Scheepvaartmuseum, VanMoof and Bugaboo. I also feel very privileged to spend one day a week working on the amazing journalistic platform De Correspondent. Besides not wanting my personal development to stagnate, I also started missing some things after 3 years as a freelancer. I missed being part of team, working on bigger projects together, working towards deadlines and milestones as a group. I missed learning from more experienced developers and designers. Being part of the Momkai team has been an absolute treat so far. Even though I'm continuing to work for my current projects, it does mean that this portfolio will be updated less frequently and larger gaps of time will occur between projects. I don’t think I’ll ever stop looking for interesting collaborations, ambitious projects and non-profits that can use some help. 250 Miles

Artist duo PolakVanBekkem asked me to help them out with some changes to their 250 Miles website. Together we made sure everything is functioning and upgraded the design a little. 

The Google Earth API they had been using is no longer supported and had to be replaced with Vimeo embeds. While we were at it, we also made some changes to the styling of the site. 

Dutch visual artists Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum lived 7 months in Philadelphia. New to the city, they invited inhabitants, both human and non-human, to explain their city through movement. Wandering by themselves, the participants recorded their trajectories, sounds and private readings of the streets, allowing the artists and the audience to access their experiences only afterwards. The project positions the viewer, with the artists, as unwitting voyeurs. - From the 250 Miles website

For curator Cindy Hertach I’ve built the Pavilion of Memes platform, a website where artists can create, publish and order their own memes, all curated by Cindy herself. The design was made by Lenka Dittrichova.

TEDxAmsterdamED 2016 - Born to Learn

On April 20th TEDxAmsterdamED 2016 took place in Theater Amsterdam. For this edition we came up with a new design for the homepage to display the campaign and have a clear call to action. Besides making some changes to our existing website I was in charge of configuring two great platforms we got to use during the day. Due to this software and our great team, the day was a huge succes!

Momice We used the event communication app Momice for our vistors during the day. In this wonderful platform our guests could find all the information for the day, including program, floor plan, speakers, Twitter & Instagram feeds and even a guest list. Together with the people from Momice we made sure the application was complete and looked terrific. Thanks again Momice!

Tag the Love A fantastic platform called Tag the Love was used to keep the people at home informed. It featured a live stream, the program, all info on our speakers and coolest of all: a social wall that made it possible for people at home to join the conversation and see what was going on at the venue. These guys are great!

Ruud All Over

As part of the Ruud All Over team I was responsible for the online part of a installation exhibition by photographer Ruud van der Peijl. Ruud All Over was on display at Mediamatic.

This installation shows hundreds of Ruud van der Peijl’s photographs infiltrating the city of Amsterdam. By replacing the advertisements at bus and tram stops Ruud’s work is shown within the urban landscape. - From the Mediamatic website

During this project I imported all the data into the Mediamatic website so we could show a map with the physical locations of the bus and tramstops. These location pages show which artwork is displayed at this location and the end result. I also made the slideshow seen in the video and had to make sure all the original works by Ruud van der Peijl were upload to the website and connected to at least one location. On the 31st of October IX held his IXTAPE Release Party. For this occasion I designed a sign-up page in style with his new artwork and the general website’s branding.

Kitty Maria

For artist Kitty Maria I customized an existing Tumblr theme to fit her needs. Using Tumblr as a platform makes it easy for her to update her site and promote her work on different social networks. 

The fully responsive website shows Kitty Maria’s work in a minimal design with some bold elements to reflect Kitty’s style.

NOS - Het DNA van MDMA

For the Dutch Broadcast Foundation I was part of a team that created the pilot for their new experimental Lab. 

In this production the viewer is taken on a journey, from the user of drugs back to the supplier of raw materials. Together with three journalist, a designer and another developer we created a responsive interactive production that tells a story in gifs, videos, infographics, photos, sounds and text. 

In April 2016 Het DNA van MDMA won a Golden SpinAward. 

Juryrapport categorie Content  Content was met bijna 70 nominaties een zeer rijke en diverse categorie. In vergelijking met vorig jaar zagen we meer inzendingen met een (merk)echt verhaal. Niettemin overheersten campagnes, eenmalige gebbetjes, inhakers en andere merkstrategieloze one-offs. Merken lijken moeite te hebben met het inzetten op waardevolle ongoing content. Ook zagen we nog relatief weinig content-initiatieven waarbij slim gebruik werd gemaakt van data. Opvallend: traditionele media bleken sterk vertegenwoordigd met goede en wat bleek prijswinnende inzendingen, hetgeen nog eens verduidelijkt: goede verhalen drijven op storytelling, niet op promotionele content.  Goud - DNA van MDMA - NOS Een schoolvoorbeeld van een fraaie en prikkelende longread waarbij slim en relevant gebruik is gemaakt van diverse digitale mogelijkheden zonder dat het totaal technisch geforceerd overkomt. Geen afleidend multimedia spektakel, geen digitale showroom: je aandachtsboog wordt niet overdreven op de proef gesteld, alles wat je ziet, hoort en leest staat in dienst van het verhaal dat je vanaf het begin direct meeneemt. Het is fun en functioneel. Een perfecte mix tussen creativiteit, redactionele kracht en user experience. Echt opvallend goed, alle keuzes kloppen. - From the SpinAwards website

Sherlocked

Sherlocked asked me to design four coats-of-arms for their newest break-in game. I can’t say to much about this assignment without any spoilers about the game, but I feel honoured to have my designs featured in their latest mystery experience!

Metakids - De dag dat je hoort

For the Metakids Foundation I helped develop and design the online part of their national campaign. 

Together with the Metakids team I developed a website that tells the stories of the day parents heard their children have a deadly metabolic disorder. The site and campaign were created to raise awareness of these diseases and what they mean for these families.

Pinot - Almanac

Sorority Pinot asked me to create some illustrations for their 2015 almanac. The larger images accompany the ‘would you rather?’ section. The one above illustrates having an eel come out of your mouth.

TEDxAmsterdamED

When I started as a volunteer for TEDxAmsterdamED at the end of 2014 the old Wordpress website was a bit of a mess. So I designed and built them a new website that is fully responsive, gives the team more flexibility and control over the content, and is within the TEDx guidelines.

As we work towards our next TEDxAmsterdamED (ED stands for education) event we’ll be continuing the process we started at the beginning 2015.

For Marnix Dorrestein a.k.a. IX I built a website that can be easily updated with new styling. In the winter of 2015 we matched it to his current cover art. 

The fully responsive design is built on a CMS so Marnix can maintain the content himself.

I replaced my previous website cause it felt a little to corporate for me. I wanted to reflected my work as freelancer more and be creative with the design. Also I had made the site quite complex and therefor a huge hassle for me to update, as a result of this the website was never showing off my latest work.

Sunday Sun

For this band I developed a one-page website to promote their then upcoming album. As a nice gimmick, the website randomly picks a background for the site and lay-overs, so the site looks different with every visit.

From a folder of assets created by their artwork designers I built a website that contains all the necessary info. Original cover art design by Menze Kwint en Joost de Haas.
