Nonbinary is great and I love being nonbinary, but I wish genderqueer got more love.
To me, it includes nonbinary and gender nonconforming. Nonbinary is matter-of-fact. Genderqueer is loud - "this is who I am, fuck you" Genderqueer is neon, it's punk, and it shouts in the streets. It's butch girls and femme boys, tomboys and sissies, bulges under a skirt, tattoos and ballgowns, painted nails with business suits. It's for the people that everyone thinks they know the gender of and the ones that people can't guess. It's drag, and lace underwear with mens clothing, and briefs under dresses, and looking allocishet jerks in the eye at work and knowing they'll never be as great as you.
It's queer weddings that people think are straight, kink clubs, and taking such good care of your partner that it makes their heart hurt.
It's gender that's mixed up with everything else and is so sharp it'll cut bigots to ribbons. It's knowing your place and keeping it yours. It's respecting other cultures and taking back what racists stole.
It's for pagans and for atheists and for Jews and for Muslims and for Buddhists and for Christians that know Jesus was homeless, poor, communist, and brown. It's the rituals that give you peace and make you strong. It's incense and prayer and singing and community even when you're alone.
It's marching at pride and working in nursing homes. It's taking slurs and making them your own. It's a shield, it's a sword, it's a blanket to keep you warm. It's dancing with all your heart whether in a club or alone.
It's finding the gender word that's just right, inventing your own, and not needing anything more than the one.
It's he and she and them and fae and zie and it, fuck you, no matter the parts or clothes or hair or face.
Genderqueer doesn't need your respect but you damn well better respect it.
