Emblez Longoria, whose career in security spans more than 20 years, belongs to several professional organizations. He maintains affiliations with the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers, from which he earned Certified Security Trainer status. He is also a member of ASIS International, through which he became a Certified Protection Professional and a Physical Security Professional. Emblez Longoria also belongs to the Executive Protection Institute and its Nine Lives Associates. As a member of this group, Emblez Longoria became a certified Personal Protection Specialists by finishing an extensive, 100-plus-hour training program. Currently a Senior Security Consultant with Verizon Communications Inc. at its operations center in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Emblez Longoria’s primary responsibilities include the protection of infrastructure, personnel information, and other company assets; the investigation of employee misconduct, network tampering, and security breaches; and the identification and eradication of security weaknesses. Mr. Longoria also served as a volunteer leader with ASIS International, the world’s largest organization for security professionals, as well as holding a career with the New Jersey State Police. Emblez Longoria earned a Criminal Justice Certification in 1988 from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Rosemont College in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. Mr. Longoria finished his undergraduate studies with highest honors, having graduated summa cum laude in 2003. He currently studies management at Rosemont and expects to earn his Master’s degree in 2011. In addition to his professional pursuits, Emblez Longoria volunteers his time as a tutor. He also assisted with rescue-and-recovery efforts at the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Mr. Longoria donates to The Salvation Army; Goodwill Industries International Inc.; and The Hunger Project, a global nonprofit promoting self-reliance in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia. He enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, and backpacking and shares his knowledge of the outdoors as a reviewer and tester of equipment and gear.

ASIS International's Annual Educational Seminar

Since 2004, Emblez Longoria has worked with Verizon Communications where he continues to serve as a senior security consultant. He graduated summa cum laude from Rosemont College with a master's degree in business management and also holds CPP certification. ASIS International will host its 61st Annual Seminar and Exhibits September 28th through October 1st, 2015, in Anaheim, California. Known as the world's premier security conference and trade show, this event will include over 200 education sessions on operational and information security topics as well as more than 600 exhibitors presenting innovative security products. The event will assist professionals in gaining skills to become more confident in their work and ready to take on leadership roles. The educational offerings at this year's ASIS seminar will cover a diverse range of issues related to cyber security and security management. Together the courses will total 25 CPE credits for CPPs, PSPs, and PCIs interested in earning credit. Outside of his career as a senior security consultant for Verizon Communications, Emblez Longoria is a passionate outdoorsman who reviews outdoor equipment for activities such as camping and fishing. Having spent significant time outdoors while hunting and backcountry camping, Emblez Longoria is knowledgeable of wilderness survival techniques. Packing a viable survival kit is essential for a long-term camping activity or other outdoor activity, and all good survival kits have at least some items in common. A knife, for example, is essential to any outdoor survival kit due to its wide range of uses, though it must be kept clean to stay useful. Cords are also a welcome addition to any survival kit; a paracord is valuable due to its great ratio of strength to size. Water and calorie-dense food also have a place in every survival kit. Finally, anyone planning for a trip to the wilderness should plan for emergencies. In the event of a wilderness emergency, the ideal result is escape, so both audio and visual signaling devices such as whistles and flashlights should be included in a survival kit. Additionally, Emblez Longoria actively supports the Hunger Project, a global movement to end hunger and poverty through sustainable, women-centered initiatives. The Hunger Project is active in 22 countries worldwide, working with local governments and organizations to create long-term solutions. In Ethiopia, for example, the Hunger Project utilizes an epicenter strategy to create clusters of rural villages that combine resources to move toward self-reliance. Working with community partners, the Hunger Project is working on improving infrastructures and achieving food security, as well as promoting literacy and education for women and children. Active in Ethiopia since 2004, the Hunger Project currently operates six epicenters through which 143 villages and over 93,000 people in the country are served.

Nine Lives Association Certifies Security Personnel

Verizon Communications’ Senior Security Consultant Emblez Longoria enhances protection of company facilities and executives. Board certified in security management and training, he has also improved accountability procedures. Emblez Longoria is active in the Nine Lives Association (NLA), and elite group of security experts in law enforcement, the military, and private industry. NLA members have completed a certification program offered by the Executive Protection Institute. The certification process includes nearly a 100-hours of training over seven days. The program emphasizes individual survival and protection of others. Students will take part in an actual protective assignment and prepare for an overnight mission at a home or hotel. Students will also learn driving techniques for escorts and motorcades, as well as instruction in medical procedures such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. The curriculum also trains participants in searching buildings, vehicles, and offices and surveying crowds. Also covered are methods for protecting children, other family members, and household staff in estates, offices, and recreation venues. The program has graduated some 3,000 persons since 1978.

The Hunger Project Helps Rural Africans Become Financially Independent

A highly experienced security professional, Emblez Longoria currently serves as a senior security consultant with Verizon Communications. Outside of his professional pursuits, Emblez Longoria supports several charitable organizations, including The Hunger Project (THP), a nonprofit that works to reduce hunger and increase self-reliance around the world through a wide range of programs and initiatives. As part of its efforts to empower those in need, THP has operated a microfinance program in Africa since 1999. The program provides women in rural Africa with the tools and resources needed to gain financial independence and improve their overall well-being. In pursuit of this goal, THP’s microfinance program offers participants training in business and finance, which helps them increase and manage their income. Once participants have completed the program training, they are eligible to apply for a loan to capitalize income-generating activities. Before they receive a loan, participants must have a minimum savings deposit equal to 10 percent of the loan principal. This not only mitigates the risk that they might default, it underscores the important role that a savings account plays in achieving creditworthiness and financial security. Since its inception, the microfinance program has helped more than 45,000 participants save a combined total of $1.6 million and has allowed 28 rural banks to become independent, community-owned financial institutions.

The Bandana: Your Most Useful Wilderness Tool

A long-time bushcraft and backcountry camping enthusiast, security consultant Emblez Longoria has developed a tried-and-true list of items which should always be packed when heading into the wilderness. Topping this list is the humble cotton bandana. Take a page from Emblez Longoria’s book on your next backcountry trip and use your bandana as one (or more) of the following: Trail Marker. Tie the bandana on a tree or rock to mark a trailhead. If you are not sure of finding your way back along a path, tear the bandana into small strips to mark the way as you go along. Breathing Mask. Wrap a bandana around your mouth and nose to filter out dust, sand, or pollen. A damp or wet bandana also helps filter out smoke, if you are caught in a brush fire. Bandage or Tourniquet. A bandana (preferably clean) can be used to stanch a wound, and as an emergency tourniquet for serious bleeding. Firestarter. A dry bandana can be used in an emergency as back-up tinder. Water Filter. It may not remove bacteria, but pouring silty or muddy water through a bandana helps improve its clarity and can prevent your real water filter from getting clogged.
