Snow, Part 2
Part 1
Civilian had tried to get Sasha to get off the couch and join them upstairs. They didn't love a stranger in their house but maybe they'd still be able to get some restful sleep with their dog to alert them and the stranger behind the locked bedroom door.
Sasha had looked at them indignant. How dare they request that she leave the comfy position she had attained beside the stranger on the couch? She had curled up more and turned her head away from her human.
Civilian had sighed and instead brought blankets and pillows down from their room. They had created as much of a nest/bed as possible on the accent chair beside the couch. They had also tucked their pepper spray beside them.
While Windshade was known as a hero, Civilian would rather be safe than sorry. Afterall, some of the best "heroes" have turned out to not be as great as their public image would lead one to believe.
Civilian had tried to stay awake for as long as possible but it was a loosing battle.
The snow had picked up substantially while hero slept on Civilian's couch. It was the early morning now and the previous 5 inches of snow was now accompanied by another 5.
Civilian awoke to Sasha licking their dangling hand and then a moment later to the sound of pots crashing from the kitchen. Civilian had bolted up and scrambled for the pepper spray among the blankets.
Sasha barked happily and led the way to the kitchen. Civilian turned the corner to find Windshade restacking their pots and pans. One pan was left to the side and not included in the stack.
Sasha licked Windshade's face bent over face and the hero looked up. They put their hands up slowly and Sasha bonked her head against his hand, begging for a scritch.
"Sorry if I woke you."
After a moment Civilian shook their head and put down the pepper spray. "Sasha did. You were just the secondary alarm."
"Ah. Sasha." Windshade's body uncoiled a bit at Civilian putting down the pepper spray and pet the dog. "She really likes people."
"You have no idea. Guests are her favorite." Civilian waved their hand. "You don't have to keep petting her. She won't stop asking until you tell her no."
"Oh, that's okay." They stood, petting Sasha with one hand and holding the pan with the other. "I was going to make you some breakfast as a thank you for letting me crash here."
Civilian chuckled softly. "Literally."
"What do you mean?"
Well that wasn't a good sign. "You crashed here. Like you literally crashed to the ground in my backyard."
"Oh," Windshade nodded. "Unintended pun."
"I figured." Civilian paused but then decided to push on. "Are you sure you are alright? Did you hurt yourself on the way down?"
"No, no I'm fine." Windshade was clearly not fine and Civilian could tell a bluff when they saw one. "Just didn't realize you were referencing my pun."
Everything in the hero's demeanor told Civilian that they were not comfortable. That they were very surprised to learned that they had crashed into their yard. They could also tell that they were avoiding a larger line of questioning about this situation.
Windshade pointed to the egg carton sitting on the counter. "How do you like your eggs?"
Civilian made the decision to let it go for now. They didn't care to be brought into a super's business if they didn't need to be. "Well thank you for offering. But I don't like eggs."
"You don't like eggs?"
"No. Those are there for other meals but I don't do eggs for breakfast."
"Oh."
Silence. Windshade was clearly struggling with what his next step should be. Civilian felt bad for causing them to flounder and ruining the gesture.
They pointed to a cabinet besides the stove. "There's pancake mix in there if you want instead. I even have chocolate chips for them."
A relieved look crossed Windshade's face. "That sounds lovely. I'll get cooking."
