What Is Emerson Street Radio?
Emerson Street Radio is a neighborhood oral storytelling project. At our annual block party in 2013, we set up a table with two chairs, a recorder and a couple mics and asked our neighbors to interview neighbors. Friends interviewed friends. Old neighbors interviewed new ones. Children interviewed adults.
We posted the edited audio on this site. The project serves a dual purpose - it records the history of our street and, at the same time, brings neighbors together.
In 2014, the city of Palo Alto awarded us a Know Your Neighbor grant that helped us expand the project to other neighbors and other streets.
Much of journalism today is devoted to major, breaking news and interviews with the rich and powerful. This is our attempt to capture the extraordinary stories of ordinary people and help preserve the personal histories of our community.
It’s been fun. Take a listen!
