As she asked him not to argue with her, Cormac sighed a little bit. âOf course,â he said, almost in a mocking tone as she turned her attention back to the nurse. He was relieved as she sat beside him, holding his phone, and hopefully for him, texting his sister and letting her know. Just as he thought it would be calm for a moment, she asked him to explain what had happened. He sighed again, placing his hands in his lap carefully before he spoke. âWe⊠Lakyn and I were at the shop, just talking about putting a performance together for her, and a fellow walked by. He was just⊠staring inside. So I waved at him, but he then shot out the windows,â he began to explain through his shaky voice. This story was going to be hard for the blonde to take in.
âHe told me to grab all of the money from the register, so I did and set it down in front of him, so it would distract him,â he added. It was really a brilliant move, or so he thought. âI tried to get Lakyn to back up slowly and one of us made too much noise so he noticed and shot his gun againâŠ. I turned to push her away and I was hit,â he finished explaining the whole story. He then re-thought mentioning Lakyn and the whole story, he knew that Emilia would then hold it against his friend and blame her for it, when he already knew sheâd blame herself either way. He laid his head back down, having spoken almost too much in a way that hurt him. He knew he was pushing himself, but he had to explain it to her. Or else he wouldnât forgive himself. He closed his eyes, waiting for her to either berate him for being so stupid or start crying.
Emilia sat in silence as the story was explained to her, going a sallow shade of pale green the further he got into the recounting, swallowing hard. It took all the girl could manage not to get up from the seat right there and then to go and find Lakyn and ask what the hell sheâd gotten the man caught up in. âSet down all the money in front of him? Why didnât he take it then?â She asked, frowning as she tried to untangle everything in her brain. âHold on, wait, who the hell is this guy?â That was the question that was really playing on her mind. Had he just been someone who was out for money and wanted to get what was in the shop cash register, or had one of the two of them been a target. Her lips pursed as her face turned sour, this whole situation wasnât sitting well with her at all. The idea of losing him was so horrible she felt like she was going to throw up every time it crossed her mind, and now she was hearing that heâd gotten hurt because heâd jumped in front of someone else.Â
âSo you tried to be heroic and save Lakyn by jumping in front of her which caused you to get shot? Without what, thinking about how that bullet could have killed you?â Her tone was sharp, because the worry she was feeling was manifesting itself into anger towards the whole situation. Anger at herself for not being there, not doing something to protect him, but also anger at this other girl whoâd put him in this position. She chewed on her bottom lip, trying to work out what to say without getting to mad, too snappy. That wasnât something he needed when he was recovering but coldness was Emiliaâs default reply. âI donâtâŠItâs just so fucked upâŠso many people are leaving, and getting hurt, and dying and then you get shot I meanâŠâ She broke off, pinching the bridge of her nose with one hand, the other still in his still not wanting to let go. âI justâŠdonât understand.â
