Just some images from the final performance
PE Evaluation
As well as completing a variety of different assignments throughout my first year at university, I have also managed to fit in a number of trips, workshops and visits outside of uni which have helped me to develop my skills further alongside completing my course.
The first trip I went on with my course and leaders was to London in November where we attended Mozilla fest which was pretty beneficial as I got to talk to people from all over the world and test out their new ideas from modern technology, they had interactive apps which I got to test which allowed me to draw on a iPad over a live video to create an animation which I thought would be something which would be quite popular. Seeing all these ideas really inspired me to work to the best of my ability on my course. Also when we were in London we visited a few art galleries as we wanted to make the most of the weekend.
The next exhibition which I attended was a 3D printing event at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. I thought this was really useful as we had been working with blender at uni, designing small 3D models which we cold print out. The museum allowed me to see how they had made real life body parts through the printers and even jewellery and bicycle parts.
After being interested in the 3D printed I then became interested in lazer cutting and how I would go about designing something to be lazer cut out. I attended a workshop with ben where we created a casing for an Arduino by using Adobe Illustrator. The measurements had to be exactly accurate and to the millimetre. He then showed me how to import that design into the lazer cutting software so that I could change the colours of the outlines and text so that certain parts would cut out and certain parts would engrave or score etc. I was happy with the outcome of my design however I learnt that I need to make sure I remove the borders of any images as I was left with an unwanted box around one of them.
Last term I attended a day out at the BBC studios in Salford with my group and the year 2 class from my course. They were being set a brief however we were there to listen in and learn about what their staff do and what their jobs entail. We got to know some of them and learnt that they all come from different backgrounds and cities which really helped us to have hope about getting a job in the future. We then completed a few tasks where we had to design a wallet for a friend, and guess which person the objects in a bag belonged to. Overall this was a really fun day and I would love to work in an environment like that some day.
Other workshops which I have attended throughout the year include projection mapping, which came in really useful when my group and I were going to incorporate it into our unit x performance. I also attended Adobe Flash and AfterEffects workshops which I used for my whole mapping project, alongside using HTML and CSS coding. I feel like those workshops with Andy really helped me to work to a higher level during my assignments. I really enjoyed the make make workshop with Ben as it was fun to try something a little more unusual and I hope I can use this in one of my projects one day!
Finally for PE over Christmas I visited Paris with a friend and we visited many museums including The Louvre where I saw the Mona Lisa, and the Venus De Milo which I had wanted to see for years, I also saw the Arc De Triomphe and many other monuments on my trip. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the museums and being able to appreciate some of the most famous pieces of art and sculptures in the world.
Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year at university and I feel like I have progressed a lot, and having these out of class visits and workshops have really helped to push me along with that and I hope to continue with this over summer.
Unit X Evaluation
I have thoroughly enjoyed completing the brief for unit X from day 1 as I was lucky enough to be put with some lovely people from interior design. All of use collaborated really well and constantly made sure we each had different job roles to fulfil, which worked effectively as every couple of days we would share our progress and discuss each other’s ideas and designs. From day one we set our own job roles so we knew what we were doing, and I feel like we all put in the effort which was needed to get this project completed on time.
We spent a lot of time sat, creating sketches and talking about lots of different concepts and ideas, and then each attended one of the workshops, which really helped us to use our imaginations and incorporate as many senses into our performance as possible.
I think our first idea for the song on Market Street tram stop was our strongest one, as we were able to have a larger area to perform in and a longer time to set up before the other groups arrived at our stop. This meant we had more options of what we could do for this song, even though we had no power supply. On the tram it was harder because there was such a limited space and passengers kept getting in the way, hence why we focused our ideas on creating the app and having the mood rings and QR tickets to hand out, as it made the performance more personal with the audience, instead of a big show.
I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the performance and I feel like I tried my best to make it run as smoothly as possible for the final piece. Comparing the final to the dress rehearsal there is a huge change, with almost everything we originally planned being rethought and recreated. The rehearsal did our group a world of good and without it I don’t think we could’ve pulled it off as we didn’t realise our flaws until that point.
Overall I am happy with the final outcome and I feel like we incorporated modern technology, opera music and also 3D design work into the performance. If I were to change anything I would simply add designs or paint the lazer cut board and also the screen in order to make them look more aesthetically pleasing, however I think we did well to recreate everything in a day so the finishing touches weren’t too important at that point!
Here was a simple illustration which shows how we originally wanted the iPads to look when we played the time lapse video, however we did not go along with this idea for various reasons; including the waterproof factor and the safety of the iPads.
Here are some sketches we did in the process of designing the initial tent idea for the tram stop, and then a visual demonstrating how the tent, with holes in it, would look on the tram stop and it shows how members of the public could come and watch the singer by looking through the holes/tubing in the sides.
Here was the example of how we wanted the QR code tickets and app to come out, surprisingly our final product came out pretty much exactly as how we originally planned and we tested the QR code and everything worked smoothly and correctly with the website and app!
We created these images in Photoshop to demonstrate how the light would pass through the text and create the shadow effect, and how they may appear if we attached them to the window of the tram.
Here are some examples of what we would’ve liked our lazer cut lyrics to look like if we had been able to use the sunlight to create that shadow effect. If we were to have more time on the project I definitely would’ve made more boards and used false lighting to create the effect you can see on the images above.
The second is a simple visual demonstrating that we could’ve used the lights on the tram to create shadows on the walls or floor of the tram, however it was far too busy to be able to do this and therefore we just ended up holding up the lyrics.
Here are some visuals we created in Photoshop showing what the projection may have looked like if we were going to project from Primark onto our bodies.
The first image shows some examples of some white outfits which are very different and stand out, which we were initially going to incorporate into our performance by projection mapping a time lapse video onto us wearing the outfits. We were going to try and get in contact with Primark and see if they would allow us to use their power supply for a projector so that we could stand in a line on Market Street tram stop and project onto our bodies as the singer sang.
Above you can see how we tested that out by using a projector and projecting onto Lois as she wore a white top. This actually worked really effectively however after talking to Primark and the tram people we realised this idea was not going to work as we would have to project across the tram lines and the glare could cause sight problems for the tram driver or passengers, and also when trams passed by it would block the line of the projection. Also, if it was too bright outside the video may not have been seen very well and passengers would’ve got in the way. I still really like the idea and can hopefully use it in another project some time.
Here is an example of a time lapse video we liked when we were researching how to create the video to be shown across the 4 iPads for our first performance.
Here were our initial job roles which we agreed on at the start of the brief, I feel like we stuck to these roles quite well, however everybody took part in bits of everything rather than sticking to doing to one thing.
In terms of job roles on the actual performance day, I did set things for both rounds of the performance. For the first song Ben and I were the ones to put up the screen and hold it up when the singer performed, and we also put it down and I helped to carry it onto the tram whilst other group members talked to the audience and took photos.
On the tram I was holding quite a lot of wood so couldn’t take part too much however I encouraged people to come and watch our singer and made sure I wasn’t getting the screen in the way of passengers or the performance.
The smell workshop was attended by Eve and she fed back to the group about what she did and learned...
“The workshop which I attended was the smell workshop. We first had a short talk, during which we discussed how smells could be perceived, described, and visualised. For example, if a smell was a shape, what shape would it be? Would this change depending on the intensity of the smell? We were encouraged to think on this and to borrow words from other senses to describe smells. E.g. bright, dark, hazy, soft, hard, etc. We also discussed how smells can come with an emotional attachment, as they remind us of words, images, feelings or memories. We were also encouraged to question whether or not a smell is passing through temporarily or permanent? After this initial briefing, we were to get into pairs, and were then assigned a portion of the city in the form of a map (shown above) which we would venture out to, and record everything we could smell as we walked this route. We were given 10 note cards to record these smells on. We had to note if the smell was strong or weak, to describe the smell in words (for example, smells can waft, distract, hint, permeate, suggest, confuse, etc.) and also in actions (baking, frying, digging, sweating, burning, rotting). We found that a lot of the common smells such as food smells coming from various cafe’s and food outlets connoted warmth and positive emotions, so we would describe them as rounded, or soft, happy or thick. Whereas less pleasant smells such as petrol were sharp and violent, and tended to last longer. Passing smells such as the mint from a pedestrian’s chewing gum provided a burst of freshness, short lived yet welcome. Other temporary smells such as a draft of cigarette smoke left a sour and dirty path in their wake. We found that various smells could really effect the atmosphere as they altered your mood and often provoked an emotional response of some kind.Once we had returned back to the Shed, we were asked to recreate our map but instead of mapping the locations on the map, we were to map the smells. We were provided with a large range of materials to use however we wanted, and were led to utilise what we had earlier discussed about what shape a smell would take, and in a 3D map would the smell be high or low? Small or large? We also assigned colours to each smell, as to really give it a mood - it’s own personality.”
This was another component of our second song performance for on the tram, we created a free app on wix and simply added a few different pages to it, one for each song with the lyrics, video and description, one of images of market street, one for a brief description about our performance and what we were doing, and one for the different colours of the mood rings so that people could see how they felt as they listened to each song.
We simply copied and pasted the URL or the website/app to a QR creating website and it quickly generated a QR code for us to use, which when scanned would take people to the website which we created. We then gained some blank tickets from the tram company and printed off and stuck on all of the QR codes, as well as cutting off the corners and making sure we had written on ‘this is not a valid ticket’. We hole punched a corner in each ticket and used string to attach mood rings to them all. As the singer was performing the second song on the tram we then handed them out and told people that if they download a QR code scanning app on their smartphone they can simply scan the ticket and find out about our performance as well as finding out what mood listening to the songs put them in.
I really liked this idea as it got us to interact with the audience and it was nice that we could give people something to keep to remember the performance by. The link to the simple website we created is:

This was our first idea for our second performance song by Vaughan Williams, Bright is the Ring of Words. I created the initial design in Photoshop and then we transferred it to Adobe Illustrator so that it could be cut out on the lazer cutter. We were originally going to make this larger and have it stuck to the window of the tram using velcro, so that the sun could shine through the letters and create a silhouette of the lyrics on the floor of the tram. However after consulting with the people from greater manchester travel, we realised that they didn’t want us to stick anything to the windows, and also it could take too long to set up and disrupt passengers. Plus, as we were doing our performance at 8pm and 9pm, the sun would not be shining to create the silhouette.
We soon realised that we would just make the board smaller and have one of our group members hold it up as the singer sang, and as the rest of us handed out our tram tickets with our QR codes printed onto them so passengers could scan them and find out more about the songs. We had trouble getting the board cut as all of the lazer cutters at uni were booked up for the next 2 weeks and therefore we had to pay to use the one at fred aldous in the northern quarter, and it was not complete until the day before the performance.
We wanted to stick with the original idea and not change this as the song was all about leaving behind a legacy and the lyrics were very powerful so we wanted to be able to highlight the last few lines of the song, and overall I felt the performance was quite powerful and had strong meanings. If i were to change anything about this one I would’ve maybe painted the wood or created more boards for us all to hold as the lazer had burnt some of the wood making it look uneven.
Here is the modified design which we planned and created in the space of one day after our rehearsal went wrong. One of the biggest issues we needed to tackle was the fact that the old ‘tent’ was very weak and bended in the wind, also all of the pieces of tubing kept slipping out as the holes we cut were far too big. The new design was thought of by the group and then Ben was able to create it the day before the final presentation with his dad. It is simply two rectangular wooden frames, joined at the middle by brackets so it can fold in half, and then has bed sheets wrapped around it to create the opaque wall which the singers could stand behind.
Because the frame was now wooden there was no risk of it bending and falling over if the performance day were to be windy. The frame also collapsed as the top and bottom beams of wood could be removed by small clasps, similar to ones on a briefcase or guitar case. this meant that the set up time was very short as it was so simple to put up, whereas the tent was tricky and very hard to fold down. We also still used the tubing idea so that people could look through, however so that they didn’t slip out we wrapped them in bubble wrap to make them less slippy and to add padding, and these then were pushed through slits in the bed sheets and stayed in place all day.
After being able to meet our singer and realising how tall he was we could then ensure that the frame was slightly taller than the tent was so that his head wouldn’t stick out the top. One feature we added was handles to the sides of each frame so that when he sang we could slightly lift it off the floor so that nobody could see over the top of the barrier. This design definitely looked a lot more well thought out and well made than our original idea and I was very happy with the outcome of it, we were able to collapse it within 20 seconds and carry it onto the tram in time for the next song and the whole performance seemed well planned.
