You’d think with all the money we pay this school every year, they’d be able to get me an actual tutor and not some upper classman dweeb that’s never spoken to an actual girl before and needs community service hours to join Nation Honor Society. I came here to get tutored in actual chemistry, idiot. Not to experience you attempting the whole “we’re making chemistry” pick up line and flopping on the delivery.... Long story short, I need someone to explain science to me, please. Any takers? I can pay, pretend to be your friend for a day, whatever the hell you want. Just actually teach me something.

Aiden scrunched up his face when she compared him to their father. “Don’t go there with me. Today really isn’t the day.” He grumbled, glancing over his shoulder. It didn’t surprise him at all that his little sister couldn’t just leave it at that, but part of him had hoped she would, because the last thing he wanted to do was talk about his feelings. “Like you wouldn’t be bitter if you had to work as much as I do, Tiny.” He pointed out, rolling his eyes at her. “Enjoy your free time while you still can. And fyi, I’m not bitter. Just very busy, Veronica.”

“I was just kidding, sourpuss. Jesus.” she said, leaning back on her arms. “Seriously, what’s up? Can’t even take a joke? Talk to me pretty boy, tell me what’s on your mind. And don’t tell me it’s the work load, because knowing dad this isn’t anything new.” she persisted, leaning her head to the side and giving him a small smile. Emma stifled a giggle and shook her head at her brother. “Archie Comics references? Seriously? When did you become such a dork. Don’t tell me that’s how you’ve been spending your free time? Watching that shitty television show remake.”

she moved and touched the ends of emmas hair to see the quality. ‘ i really like it, i’ve been thinking of putting pink through my hair but i’m worried about like breakage if i did it myself. ’ she mused. ‘ i like the blue on you, i would maybe add some purple too though, the unicorn colours are really in right now - everything is unicorn coloured. ’

Eyeing the strands of her hair for a bit longer, she hummed and nodded. “Unicorn hair, huh? Would that even look good with my brunette hair? Isn’t that a blonde or silver hair kinda thing?” she asked, trying to picture what some purple would look like. “Besides, I’m not exactly some reject Starbucks drink.... Maybe we could try the purple though. Wanna help me do it?”

“I mean, you’re probably right. That woman can’t control my life.” she said, before slumping back and sighing. “But do you think there’s an air of professionalism I need to up hold? Can I be taken seriously if my hair is the same color as a tropical skittle?”

Cringing when Lux mentioned what her cousin did, Emma shook her head. “That’s basically an understatement. I wouldn’t call it adorable, more sad.” she said, giving a shrug of her shoulders. “Oh okay. When you said you went to high school together it made it sound like you were close or something.... Well at least you can officially add the coolest Harper to the list of Harpers that you’ve met. I’m the only one that counts anyway.”

Pointing to the top of her head, Emma blinked at the other girl. “I’m a brunette.” she said matter-of-factly. “And yea, you’re right, it’s not. Which is why I figure it’s a good idea to stick with something natural, you know?”

“Thanks, that’s very kind of you.” Molly replied, breathing out a sigh of relief. “Everything just looks alike here, you know? There’s sand.. and then some more sand. It’s hard to tell where the sand ends and other things begin.” She rambled as she followed the other girl to the coffee shop. “A tourist? No, not really! But you are right, I’m not from here either. I’m actually trying to find someone, but so far I haven’t been very successful in my search. That’s alright, though. I’m not giving up just yet. And the weather is really nice, so that’s a plus!” 

“It’s easy to tell, actually. Just look for the wood of the boardwalk. That’s usually where the sand ends.” Emma said over her shoulder, tossing the door open behind her so the brunette could follow her in. “Looking for someone? In this boring town? Who could possibly be interesting enough to look for?” She asked, looking at Molly with furrowed eyebrows. “The bathrooms are that way. If you need me after to show you home, just let me know. I don’t mind walking you.” She pointed, then stepped in line for the till.

“It was the first dystopian novel I ever read and it really helped me to learn that the idea of sameness would never work. It made me realize how important it is to embrace our differences. Whether it’s personality or cultural differences. I also found parts of it heart breaking. The characters never knew how wrong their way of life was because they didn’t know any different, so you can’t really blame them for their actions. And the ending! There’s no way of knowing if it’s real or if it was just a mirage. I never read any of her other books, but maybe I will.”

“Not to burst your literature bubble or give you any spoilers.... but if you read the rest of the series it lets you know whether the end was real or not.” Emma said matter-of-factly. “Gathering Blue and the Messenger appear to be prequels. Where as one if going on just a little bit after The Giver, if not the same time. And the other is a sequel. You don’t know that until you read Son though. Then they all tie together. Those books were written mainly because most people found the ending of The Giver to be unsatisfactory. So Lois Lowry was forced to continue it and give the story and eventual close.... I suggest you do read them. They put a whole knew light to The Giver.” She said, shrugging her shoulders. The series was one she had read through a number of times herself. “My favorite happens to be The Messenger. But that’s just because I love Matty.”

Crinkling her nose, Emma shook her head. “I agree with you there, way over played. Which is why I wasn’t thinking blonde, I was thinking my natural hair color. You know, all brown. One solid color.” she said, giving a shrug of her shoulders. “One of my professors, actually. So yea, probably somewhere in her sixties. These people are so... insufferable.”

Maybe this would be something she could leave behind here in this school, make her mark with. “Oh yea, I see what you mean. I won’t burst his bubble on it if you don’t. He’d probably deny it to the grave anyway.” Emma added with a chuckle. “Taken a pity on you for what?”

If they were in a cartoon a lightbulb probably would have appeared above her head. “Is it okay if I take this idea and run with it?” She asked Lux, giving her a hopeful pair of pleading eyes. “Horrify him how? You’re, like, super gorgeous. I could understand him not being your type, but there other way around is just plain silly.”

“Dude, that sounds kinda epic. PUNK: Monmouth University edition. How rad would that be?” she laughed, thinking about it for a moment. “I could probably even coax some tech people into helping us make it happen.” When Lux mentioned her brother, Emma sighed and nodded. “Yea, there’s a lot of us. The family all resides in one place so that’s bound to happen. And yep, the one and only. Before I get any questions or explanations on how you know him; I don’t know where he is, and no I can’t see if he’s really gonna call you back anytime soon. Sorry babe.”
