Contextualising the weave.
Knitted sample beginning to contextualise
I incision this sample being developed into larger pieces for the body or for a jumper with this print chord hanging or playing a role in its connection to something possibly another body. It reminds me of an ambillical chord and is strong and has a maternal quality. I’m really happy with this sample as it combines finger knitting to create a larger knitted structure.
Weave made from assorted yarns, finger knitted samples and bits of a bin bag. I made this using the twisting weave method Esna taught me. I made the look myself in the 3D workshop by hammering nails imto a block of scrap wood. I am really happy with this sample mostly because of the colours and different textures. It’s chaotic yet controlled at the top.
Lip biting collage
I created cut out shapes similar to the pink lip biting drawing out of card. I played around with placement and layering, this was interesting to do outside in the sun because of the shadows it casted.
Another knitted sample. I wanted to bring in the pink yarn to create a streaky affect, this made the sample more interesting and tied in well with my colour scheme. Knitting with the smallest needles was more challenging as the stitches were very tight but I like the contrast in density and tightness of the samples.
Learning to knit knit
I decided to rise to the challenge of learning to knit with needles as I struggled in the workshop to get my head round the technique. With perseverance I managed to figure it out and over the course of a week managed to knit the sample in the second image. I think I added a few loops as you can see the sample starts off small and gets wider throughout. Over all I’m happy with this progress as it’s a good new skill I’ve learnt. It goes to show I can get the hang of something when I try again in my own time, I feel I was a bit overwhelmed in the studio as I felt like I was the only person who didn’t understand the technique so I’m proud that I managed to teach myself at home.
Esna Su weaving tutorial
Esna Su
We were lucky enough to have CSM Jewellery design alumni Esna Su come in to speak to us about her works. Here are some examples she brought in which are made from leather chord she cuts from dead stock leather off cuts. She uses these to knit with while they’re wet so they’re soft then allows them to dry so they become hard and hold their shape.
It was really nice to see Esnas work first hand, see her process and understand the cultural and political contexts of her work. It is this that makes her work important and special to me. Her work is inspired by the Syrian refugee crisis where her bodily sculptures resemble the carrying of personal belongings. This taught me the importance of your work having meaning and making references to current worldly issues within your work.
Beautiful and cerebral, the work of artist Esna Su harnesses the power of multiculturalism – Of The Minute
