“My teacher just doesn’t get humor” Russell huffed as he set a essay with a D minus on it. “All he said was to compare on of Shakespeare’s writings to something more modern. So I of course chose to compare Hamlet to the Lion King. Apparently since The Lion King is basically Disney’s version of Hamlet it doesn’t count.” He rolled his eyes, looking down at his paper with the low grade. “I mean sure it was suppose to be a joke but I actually did a lot of work on it. The least he could have done is give me a C on it.”

just a quick glance at the sheets of paper brought a smile to emma’s face. she gives him a grimace, patting her big fat edition of hamlet lovingly on the table. “ well, i’ll be honest, russell, when i think of modern hamlet, aside from the royal shakespeare company’s 2015 production, i’ll totally admit that i think of the lion king too. but, if you want somebody to help you out on a redo essay, i’m your girl. ”

she’d once again woken up in a place where she shouldn’t have been. josie’s legs hurt ( when didn’t they, with the amount the practiced ), her headache telling her yesterday had been a long day, a long night. her tight dress felt too tight, her feet aching from her high heels. her mouth was dry, every light too bright. she carefully opened her eyes, only to find someone in front of her. “what ??” she questioned.

“ what do you mean what? ” emma was in disbelief, and, usually so composed, she began to talk with her hands. “ i just found you totally passed out beside a bench. not even on the bench, you’re beside it. it’s two in the morning, i just closed up the shop; nobody’s around here, usually. i thought you were dead. ”

madison cocked her head to the side. ‘’ don’t worry em, if i somehow gain two hundred pounds by tomorrow, i’ll let you know.’’ she teased. maddie wasn’t one to worry about her weight, she did her fair share of sports and ate somewhat well. ‘’ it won’t, i promise.’’ the blonde reassured. ‘’ sparkling water?’’ mads lifted her brows, sounding bemused. ‘’ alright, one sparkling water.’’

“ maybe you’re not gonna gain them by tomorrow, but the milkshakes are gonna pile up someday, madison. ” emma swaps her gum from one side of her mouth to another, attempting to salvage the last bits of taste from it. “ and there’s nothing wrong with sparkling water. it’s a brilliant alternative to regular soda. ”

“That’s actually the perfect analogy for it.” Lucas nodded his head. “A great analogy for mental health in general, if you think about it. Going without treatment, as Esther did here and there, makes everything feel like grasping at straws.” he said, giving a shrug of his shoulders as he thought about it. Emma’s comment made him raise and eyebrow though. “Do you think that’s what Esther chooses to do? Just what Sylvia did? Shove her head in an oven? You know, considering we don’t get an ending other than knowing Esther’s back in treatment.”

the look on her face was dark, only masked by the dim lighting of the streetlamps. she worked hard to conceal it, but was unable to. but, she supposed, lucas knew the affinity she had for books, and the people who wrote them. her downward expression might only have been a reaction to sylvia plath’s grim fate. “ honestly, lucas? it might sound incredibly pessimistic of me, but . . . yeah, i think she did. i mean, joan was written to seem . . . well, she was an oddball, a pretender, a bit of a baby, to be honest. but she also was apparently doing much better than esther. and, then, so suddenly, she’s killed herself. it’s like daisy in girl, interrupted, the one brittany murphy played in the movie; she was clearly sick, but functioning and suddenly snap. she’s dead. you turn the page. the book moves on. ”

In response to Emma’s laughter, all Lucas did was smile. He enjoyed it, seeing his friends giddy like that. It was one of the nicer things about this dreary place. “You have a point. Might as well take advantage of this nice night while we have it.” Lucas agreed with a nod. When Emma brought him The Bell Jar, Lucas simply nodded again in agreement and understanding. “Oh totally, I completely agree. It’s completely thought provoking, you know? Could you imagine having to live a daily life like Ester’s? She’s a real trooper, in my opinion, how she battles and handles what she does.” Lucas agrees, ignorant to the fact that Emma was in fact alluding to herself in her words. 

her smile was fake, but her fervour was not. there was nothing emma loved more than when she got a chance to really delve into literature, especially with lucas. she nodded slowly, and stretched out her arms, formulating an answer. “ definitely. i don’t know how she does it, how she keeps it up for so long before cracking. like a gone off egg; it’s left and it’s left and when you grab it and break it . . . it’s even worse than you previously thought. ” it was only after she shut her big fat mouth that emma realized how deranged she sounded. “ of course, esther gets relatively better. but hey, it is semi-autobiographical . . . we all know what happened to sylvia. ”

Wes had noticed, of course he did. How the food was magically disappearing from Emma’s plate. How it didn’t seem like she was eating a single bite of any of it, so it made no sense how it was diminishing. He considered asking her about it himself, but then he reminded himself that he was probably the only secretly crazy person sitting at that table. And that he was most likely projecting onto other people. Just because he was slipping his food under the table and into his pockets did not mean other people did that too. When Emma asked Wes to show her to the bathroom, he didn’t immediately think anything of it. That was until she flashed him a look that proved to him otherwise. That this trip to the bathroom would not be a trip to the bathroom. “Oh, right, yea, sure.” he nodded, quickly pushing his chair back so he could stand. He exited the dinning room a few moments after she had, looking her over for a moment before motioning her to follow him. “So, uh…. you can use my bathroom if you’d like?” he offered her as he started leading her further away from the dinning room they were eating in; the last thing he needed was his parents hearing the conversation he was wondering if they were about to have. However, because he wasn’t entirely sure and didn’t want to freak her out, he was fully ready to dance around the topic. “Unless you don’t actually need one…”

her sleeves up around her palms, emma folded her arms over her chest. she bit her tongue and looked at the ground, figuring out just how to phrase what she was going to say. emma shook her head and finally, took that deep breath before the plunge. “ no. i don’t need one. ” it didn’t look like he was going to start the conversation. the atmosphere was like that of a room where someone had just died. a swallow. her mouth was dry. “ you didn’t . . . eat any of dinner. like, none of it. i . . . i didn’t eith       i didn’t know, wes. is, um, is this a usual thing for you? or are you just, i don’t know, having a bad day? ” emma’s heart skipped a beat, and her protective instincts kicked in. her eyes are plastered to the floor, hands balled into fists. what if she’s wrong? what if she’s wrong? if she’s wrong, then everything she’s been working for is ruined.

madison rolled her eyes playfully. ‘’ eating is not going to ruin my progress, silly.’’ she chuckled. ‘’ i won’t miss any steps because i drank a milkshake. i’ll still be a good dancer tomorrow em, relax.’’ she brushed it off. ‘’ since you’re here and all, are you sure you don’t want anything? i did a few extra hours of tutoring.’’ 

" no, you won’t forget the steps, but when you try to do them tomorrow; you’re not going to be light on your feet. literally. ”  emma felt suddenly exposed, so she followed up her snap with a shrug of her shoulders.  “ i guess one won’t hurt you. i guess i’ll have a sparkling water. ”

" i suppose, when you put it like that . . . but i don’t know. it isn’t what i would have done. i probably would have, y’know, verbally retorted. i guess the concept of putting someone in their place is . . . it . . . it feels a bit like undermining them in return. which, in the situation at hand, is equality between the sexes in question, but i don’t know. it’s reminiscent of a modern case of john in ‘the yellow wallpaper’. y’know; you know best, in your opinion, hence the smack to the face, but no real interaction has happened between the parties in an effort to remedy the situation. i doubt a slap to the face will deter him from groping other women. on the other hand entirely, it might reinforce a belief that women are hysterical and are things to be tamed. ”

Thanks to his flashlight, Lucas couldn’t exactly see Emma when she approached him to push his hand down. However, as soon as her fingers made contact with his skin, he jumped. Seeing her face was a relief though. Not only because she wasn’t some crazy stranger, but also because that meant he didn’t need to walk home alone anymore. Lucas released a sigh of relief and turned his flashlight off so he could shove his phone in his pocket. “Jesus, is that Jefferds guy ever on time? Why didn’t you just text me? I would have totally come and picked you up to walk you home. You know, for your safety.” he said, though he definitely meant it would have benefitted his own. “Or loaned you money for a cab! …. But come on, I’ll walk ya now. How was work?” 

she wasn’t sure why exactly she laughed quite as loudly as she did, quite as piggishly as she did, but it felt wonderful. between her own personal problems and the ones she shared with her family at the moment, there was a feeling of lightness that always reared its head around lucas. she felt free to laugh. with a shake of her head, emma shrugged her shoulders as they walked on.  “ i mean, it’s not like we have to walk far or anything. a cab just doesn’t seem worth it, especially on a crisp night like tonight. work was good. all the usuals came in. i’m over halfway through ‘the bell jar’ too. it’s . . . ”  another shrug. she doesn’t want to say it rings true. she wouldn’t want lucas to worry.  “ it’s intriguing. i can’t imagine feeling that badly about myself. ”

this was not okay. emma, pushing her asparagus around on the expensive plate before it joined its brothers in her sleeves, sent a glare at wesley across the table. there was no way he hadn’t noticed her. they were one in the same, it seemed. she watched all the way through the first course          some posh little nibbly things that easily broke apart to look eaten without rousing any attention          and saw it clearly. his fork never touched his lips. once her plate looked suitably decimated, emma put on her best smile. she looked around at their families, and flashed her teeth at wesley in particular.  “ this house is so big; i always feel like i’m going to get lost on my way to the bathroom. speaking of; you’re out of toilet paper in your guest bathroom; i forgot to mention it earlier.. wes, could you show me to one of the other ones? ”  she knew full well he had no interest in showing her to a bathroom, but she hoped the look she gave him was enough to convey that emma had no intentions of relieving herself. a conversation was in order. before he even has given a response, emma pushed her chair out from the table and slithered out of the dining room. she waited outside the heavy door, sleeves clutched tight to prevent any stray evidence from slipping out.

                           “ and what did that do? other than bring you down to his lowlife level? and probably cause a scene? you can spin me a yarn about other radicals around you clapping for violence, but i’m not buying it. ”

‘’do you have any milkshakes?’’ madison leaned in. she was at the local ice cream parlour and was hoping for a refreshing drink as a reward for surviving through dance practice. still in her dance attire, she took out her wallet and glanced at the person beside her. ‘’ do you want one too or?’’ madison dragged out, curious to why the other was staring.

                             “ madison, you just got back from dance practice. if i’d known you were meeting me for something that’s only gonna ruin your progress, i’d have refused the invite. ”

she wasn’t feeling sick as often as she had previously. it seemed like a good sign, but maria only knew that it meant things were going to get worse. her stomach would start growing past the small amount she’d managed to hide until now, she’d be an adult. but still, there was one thing that wasn’t growing, didn’t make her seem like an adult at all. balancing on her toes, she was considering just jumping, but she felt like it wouldn’t make a difference. “could you maybe grab that thing for me ??” maria asked, without turning to face the person near her.

                             “ that’s my job. ” perks      or cons, emma was never really sure which      of being assistant manager of a bookshop that spanned all of the size of a deluxe prison cell, was getting to be the only one working. it was quiet enough, most people were regulars who came and went, and emma got to spend most of the day reading at the counter, but it was nice to interact with people too. she knew maria from school, and was more than happy to help. emma was careful not to stand up to fast, and grabbed the book from the top shelf.

Lucas wasn’t sure what possessed him to walk home by himself. He surely had enough money in his pocket to call himself a cab, or maybe dial an uber. He just felt like it was a waste. Like he should conserve that stuff. However, he still felt himself growing incredibly anxious for some reason that he couldn’t place. Maybe it was how quiet the streets seemed that night, or the fact that he was by himself, but whatever the reason he was surely freaked. When he got a block or some further, he heard to sound of someone walking behind him. Something that made nervous Lucas stop in his tracks, turn his flashlight on on his phone, and spin around quickly; shining his light on the person in question. “Who’s there? I have pepper spray and I’m not afraid to use it!” he shouted, trying to seem brave even though it was visible that he was shaking.

it’s well meaning roll of her eyes that precedes her fully jumping out of the shadows. her expression quickly widens into a smile, and emma approaches lucas with her hands clasped behind her back. she reaches out and pushes down his outstretched arm, falling into step with him.  “ hey, it’s just me         i finished my shift         mr jefferds finally arrived for the night owl hours         and ran to catch up with you. i didn’t wanna walk home alone and . . . well, money is too tight to hire a cab. ”
