Emma Watson invites Greg Williams to a game of pickleball in Cannes as she revels in being the happiest and healthiest she has ever been.

Emma Watson is currently living in the present, practicing being in the world without the pressure of producing. This past May, that meant travelling to the Cannes Film Festival to immerse herself in movies with her friend and filmmaker Hassan Akkad after a self-imposed break from the public eye. It’s there that Greg Williams captured pictures of the actor playing her new obsession: pickleball. ‘It’s the sound the ball makes when you smack it; it’s the best therapy I never paid for,’ she says as she plays. Having had a hectic film career since she was just 10 years old and cast as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise (going on to The Bling Ring, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Beauty and the Beast and Little Women), Watson has since taken a calculated step back from acting to continue her education and challenge herself. After they return from the French Riviera, Watson and Akkad catch up to discuss the exploration of creativity and having the courage to leave something behind.

justin___wiggins: I worked on a movie starring Katie McGrath. (You might recognize her from shows such as The Tudors, Merlin, Supergirl and Jurassic World). Her make-up artist at the time @gerliamakemeup is a close friend of mine and told her I was excited to meeting her. (Seeing as I’m a huge fan of her work). She also heard (through my Make Up Artist friend) that I was feeling a bit under the weather and surprised me with a phone call (How cool is that?! Needless to say i was cheered up Immediatly and we talked for a while). She also sent me photos like this “Hey Justin”, and this was still all before I had even met her. We talked about how she was a little bored and didn’t have much on her laptop to watch, and she mentioned the types of shows, documentaries, and other things she liked. So I took note of everything and gave it to her as a gift when I met her. She spent some time with me on set, and I got to watch her work. Such an fantastic woman. I’m really excited to see her in the John Wick TV Seriesspin off (The Continental).
