Apartheid - the system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race in force in South Africa from 1948 to 1991. It's eye-opening to see and learn about some of the realivtivly recent horrific events that occurred during the apartheid movement. The country of South Africa has come a long way in recent years but still struggles with government corruption, poverty, high crimes rates and a large wealth devide. For years declared a no go zone due to urban decay and high crime rates, Maboneng has been transformed to one ofJohannesburg's busiest areas full of great food, art and culture. Property developer Jonathan Liebmann purchased abondend and derelict buildings and in just 10 years the area has become the number one stop for tourists and hipsters alike. Popular food market Arts on Main, the museum of modern African design and the free graffiti tour just some of the main attractions. After visiting Maboneng twice now, 18 months apart, it's great to see the progress is continuing and the area is still growing! (at The Maboneng Precinct)

The central business district in Johannesburg 🇿🇦 Once a thriving wealthy white area before the end of apartheid in South Africa, it feel into disrepair and poverty when the rich white fled in fear of an uprising. Many buildings are still illegally inhabited with forceful evictions, security companies and derelict buildings a frequent site. Some buildings are completely bricked up on the ground floor and sitting empty for over 25 years.
