This year's milkweed is breaching containment but I'm glad it's liking my garden enough to be sending up more stalks. I saw a couple monarch caterpillars last year so hopefully there will be even more this year.

Take a look at these African peach moths (Egybolis vaillantina). The shades of blue on their wings are so striking against the bright hues and dark edgings. Living art, right?

Learned how to do snake population transects last week! We mostly saw garter snakes, and just a couple eastern fox snakes. We hope to see some smooth greens this summer so our site biologist can incubate the eggs.

I also stumbled upon my first ever morel right near one of the snake boards! There was just the one so I left it to spore out.

Big group foraging this morning and I found these two! So yeah, my only advice for finding morels is to let out a big, dissatisfied sigh and look for snakes instead

one thing i can't stand about social media is when you make a post to bring attention to something specific but the people in the replies won't even acknowledge the point you're trying to make before spiraling into something only tangentially related to the original post. it's sharing space with bean-soupification and whataboutisms under the "go make your own goddamn post" umbrella

i wish we would stop pretending these politicians, capitalists, etc are load bearing when WE KNOW for a fact that the system in place treats EVERYONE as replaceable. remove one billionaire and another will fill the void. the institutions and systems that manufacture ultra-wealth will continue extracting the life force of the planet and the people living on it.
