“Are you complaining?” Is the tired retort as he creates a gap in distance between them in spite of Neji’s attempt to close it. It’s insufferable, he thinks, and he wonders just how his brother ever goes without it as often as he does, or did. He doesn’t know anymore, all that Shu does know is that he’s tired and that he hasn’t slept as much as he usually does in the last weeks. It’s too hard to sleep when he’s as hungry as he is, and nothing quite sates his thirst like blood would.
The only time that Shu abruptly chooses to stop is when Neji sends a last comment his way, veiled thinly with concern. It makes Shu somehow feel even more exhausted that the shinobi can still worry about him even after all the abuse he has suffered. It’s what drives Shu to think that this guy really must be a masochist.
“Don’t waste your time worrying about me.”
It was a mistake to look at him. All that Shu ends up seeing is his prey, something, someone to hunt and he grits his teeth before turning his blue eyes away. He feels like he’s going to pass out at this rate but he’ll be damned before he lets Neji know. There’s only a short ways from the tea shop at any rate, he just has to hold on until they make it there, then he can do what he always does at work, which is nothing though not that anyone (but Neji) really seems to mind. "Ugh. We’re almost there.“
As he expected, Shu widens the gap between them again shortly after Neji steps closer. Quite frankly, noticing it annoys the shinobi to no extent, and though he doesn't make any comment towards the action, he still makes sure his displeasure is made clear with a loud sigh as they continue to walk forward.
When Shu stops, Neji notices a few second after and stays not too far from his husband when the vampire turns his head to look at him. This must be the first time in a while that Neji gets to really examine Shu (even if it's from a certain distance behind) and all he can really notice is that there's something not quite right with the way Shu looks--almost sickly, but not quite. It doesn't sit well with Neji but he doesn't bring himself to confront the other about it just yet, thinking that if something were to go wrong, he'd rather not have an audience for it outside.
Nearing the tea shop, the brunet can see that it isn't nearly as full as it normally is through the windows, luckily enough. Aside from that, they're still early for their shift, so Neji can check up on Shu without interfering with his own work. As they enter, he notices Shu immediately heading for his typical spot in the corner like always, but rather than allowing him the luxury of resting there, Neji grabs the vampire's arm and pulls him to the backroom of the shop before closing the door behind them. He stands with his back to it so that Shu can't leave, pulling him a little bit closer to get a better look at his condition.
“Ah--”
“You idiot! Are you sick?”
