I know plenty of people have talked about this, but it still needs to be said
Where is Licorice’s backstory?
There’s a lot I could say about Devsis neglecting their earlier characters in CRK, however, I wanna focus on the lingering questions in Licorice’s past.
So far, we only have three things to go on. His little blurb, his dialogue in episode 13, and his dialogue in the Licorice Village
From this, we can gather that he used to be (or tried to be) a wizard, but ended up getting mocked
We also know that he hailed from the Dark Cacao Kingdom, from the Licorice Village, and that his tribe is nowhere to be found
We also learn that he despises the Licorice Sea, even so much that he spits at the name, however, he has some kind of power over it
That brings a lot of questions
What happened to his village?
Where is his tribe?
Why does he hate the Licorice Sea so much, when it provides him such power?
Is it just because the Licorice Sea damaged the Dark Cacao Kingdom, or is it a personal reason?
Where did he learn magic?
Of course I have my own personal HC answers to these questions, but I would really like to know the canon answers

Okay, since everyone has been asking, I’ll share my own timeline of his past
(This is a long one, so be ready)
So it all started when Licorice was young, he was a big reader, and he once read about a powerful mage doing magic. Ever since that day, he’s been obsessed with the idea of magic.
Another thing you should know is that, the Licorice Tribe is naturally inclined towards dark magic, which they believe is taboo.
So naturally, Licorice is heavily discouraged, being punished with chores if he tries to ask.
He slowly starts getting angry and bitter at his village, at his parents, for not telling him about magic and not explaining why.
Eventually, he’s had enough. He snaps at his parents, and he demands to know about magic one more time. When his parents say no, he tells them he hates them and storms off to his room.
Then, at the dead of night, he takes what little possessions he has and runs away from the village.
If the village wasn’t going to tell him about magic, he’ll find someone who will.
Eventually, after a long, hard journey, he finds Parfaidia and its magic academy and he is ecstatic.
A whole school dedicated to magic? It’s everything he’s ever wanted!
He enrolls and attends the school, and he learns so much, and he loves this school.
In his third year, since his skills have grown almost prodigiously, decides to try something new.
Coffee Magic.
And who teaches that class? That’s right. Espresso Cookie.
They have a…rough start, since Licorice is kind of a klutz, and makes a lot of mistakes.
But, Licorice gets the hang of it, and Espresso begins to like him. Espresso even becomes Licorice’s favorite professor.
However, Licorice was also getting picked on by some light magic students.
Another thing you should know, Licorice is “allergic” to light magic. He can’t perform it or have it used on him without it causing pain and burns.
One of the light magic students blasts him with a rather large amount of light magic, and Licorice narrowly avoids it, however, it hits his forearm.
He could have died in that moment, and that bully is just laughing like it was no big deal.
Licorice, in his slurry of adrenaline, anger, and pain, accidentally casts a dark curse.
A curse that transformed that light magic student into a monster, a flesh-hungry monster bound to the dungeons of the school.
Naturally, the teachers find out and he gets put on a school trial.
He’s panicking and crying that it was just an accident and that he didn’t mean to.
But everyone rules against him.
He turns to Espresso, since he knows about the bullying, and knows Licorice as a person.
Espresso sees that the odds are against him, and that if he defends Licorice, he risks losing his job.
So he rules against him.
Licorice is absolutely crushed.
His favorite professor…? Saying that he was a bad person?
Then Licorice gets the idea that…Espresso never liked him. That he was just waiting for the chance to give him the boot.
Yeah, that was the only explanation…!
So once again, he is left without a home, as he is expelled from the academy.
He has no choice but to return home, and tell everyone in his village that he failed.
He makes it to his village, bracing himself for yelling, scolding, and chores for all eternity, but is met with…
Nothing.
The whole village is empty. Decrepit. Decayed.
The farms have long since withered away, the houses are in shambles, and it’s dead silent.
Everyone is gone.
Licorice goes to the next milk village over, to find out where everyone went.
It turns out, a year after he’d left, the tribe was struck with a famine. Everyone either got sick or starved to death.
He was the last of the Licorice tribe.
This was it. There was nothing left for Licorice. He couldn’t go back to school, and his family was crumbled.
