The U.S. is projected to have no racial or ethnic group as its majority within the next several decades, but that day apparently is already here for the nation’s youngest children.
Census Bureau estimates for July 1, 2015, released today, say that just over half – 50.2% – of U.S. babies younger than 1 year old were racial or ethnic minorities.
The statistics indicate that demographic change is percolating upward through the nation’s age groups, starting with the youngest ones. In fact, the bureau estimates indicate that 50.3% of children younger than 5 were racial or ethnic minorities in 2015.

After Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed a restrictive anti-abortion bill into law, women have been filling him in on what’s going on with their bodies
“I need to get a message to the governor that I am on day three of my period,” one caller’s voicemail began. “My flow seems abnormally heavy, but my cramps are much better.” Started by an anonymous woman, the campaign is organized around the Periods for Pence Facebook page.
Hosted by Kelly McEvers, Embedded takes a story from the news and goes deep. What does it feel like for a father in El Salvador to lie to his daughter about the bodies he saw in the street that day? What does it feel like for a nurse from rural Indiana to shoot up a powerful prescription opioid? What does it feel like to survive a shootout with the most notorious biker gang in Texas? You may have seen headlines about these stories. Embedded takes you to where they're happening.
When you read the headlines on your newsfeed, sometimes you have a lot of questions. Our new podcast is hoping to answer them. Embedded is going deep into the news.

The writing is — I’m free from pain. It’s the place where I live; it’s where I have control; it’s where nobody tells me what to do; it’s where my imagination is fecund and I am really at my best. Nothing matters more in the world or in my body or anywhere when I’m writing.
