you jolted awake, breathing raggedly. the vision of valko running ahead and his back getting smaller while you weren’t able to catch up no matter how fast you were chasing him was still as clear as day, replaying like a short clip in your mind.
”valko?” you muttered, hand frantically reaching out to pat the spot beside you—the spot where the man had lied down the night before while holding you close, finding him still asleep and sound. you let out the quietest but somehow still biggest sigh of relief, your heartbeat adjusting to reality after coming down from the horror you were just seeing in your dream.
he’s here. everything’s fine.
”hey, why are you up? nightmares?” you heard a familiar rasp as valko got up, enveloping you in a big hug from behind, his hand around your stomach as he gently pulled you in so you were leaning on his chest. should’ve known your charade won’t get past his sharp hearing.
”your heart is racing, i could’ve heard it from miles away,” he claimed softly, bringing a hand to your cheek, gently nudging your face to his way. his yellow orbs gleamed subtly in the dark as they scanned you, his eyes narrowed slightly when he saw tears at the corner of your eyes.
“you see, i like when your heart does that when you’re near me. but this time? not so much.” he planted his lips to both corners of your eyes, washing the tear away. he kissed your cheeks as well, wanting to erase the trail of wetness away, but above all he just wanted to chase away the sadness you’re currently feeling.
“just had a dream where you left me,” you said, voice barely above a whisper. “that stupid wolf.” he didn’t miss a beat when he said it, like he’s more angry in your place more than you had been. you let out a small laugh, valko’s eyes softened at the sight, like he just won something so valuable.
“you’re talking about yourself, you know,” you replied, leaning closer to the man hugging his arm closer like it’s your lifeline.
“i don’t claim him, must be a random man pretending to be me. you know i’ll never leave you. i’m not going anywhere, you’re stuck with me,” he grinned, showing his canine teeth you had grown to adore, a smile that you could see even a hundred times but still won’t be satisfied. hearing that, you would usually retort with a joke of your own, leading to a light hearted banter. yet now all you could do is stare, as he stared back at you, nuzzling closer as his hair tickled your neck; trying to draw a laugh out of you.
“promise?” you asked, chuckling softly but at the same time still tearing up at the thought of your nightmare coming true once more.
valko used his thumb to brush your tears before it they could reach your cheek, his stomach churning at the sight of you being so sad. if only he could take your distress away with the power he had, but he never felt so hopeless when the only thing he could offer at the time was consolation when the only thing he wanted to do was give you everything. so instead he said.
“yeah.” he kissed your temple. “promise.”
