Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo Appreciation Post

For those who didn’t know these little guys existed — Tree Kangaroos are marsupials native to New Guinea and Australia! Unlike their cousins the kangaroo and wallaby, these guys live in the trees of dense cloud forests!!

While more docile than their larger, red cousins, tree kangaroos are very elusive! Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo is endemic to Papúa New Guinea, where their coloring helps them perfectly blend in to their cloudforest home. Non-local researchers hoping to study and protect this endangered species often have to employ the help of local hunters or guides to spot them!!

They are completely herbaceous, enjoying fruits and veggies alike. In the wild, they would feed on leaves, local fruits and mosses. In zoos, they could be fed anything from apples and carrots to corn and hard-boiled eggs!

They typically weigh about 20lbs, and their tails are usually about the same length as their body, measuring at around 3 feet long!

Matschies' ears are small and bear-like and unfortunately don’t have very excellent hearing because of it.

But it can be assumed they live a fairly relaxed life, considering they spend nearly 15 hours of their day sleeping or lounging about.

Rather than sleeping for long periods, it’s observed they typically sleep in short bursts, choosing to nestle down in whatever tree they happen to be in at the time.

Other fun facts!!

- The gestation period lasts approximately 44.2 days, which is known to be the longest for any of the marsupials. Joeys are born only an inch long.

- Instead of sweating, Matschie's tree-kangaroo licks its forearms and allows the evaporation to help cool its body.

- Like their cousins, they’re very good at hopping! They can leap up to 30ft!!

- Like water off a duck’s back, curly whorls on the tree kangaroo’s back fur let water run right off it! That comes quite in handy in a dense rainforest.
